SQLinked - A Hybrid Approach for Local and Database-Remote Program Execution

    No full text
When working with today's relational databases, there is usually a clear boundary between the database server and the application, that interfaces with the database system using the query language SQL. The concept of stored procedures allows to move complex parts of the business logic into the database server for various reasons, as, for instance, to reduce the latency of ELT processes that involve several database queries building on each other like distributing records into tables according to their attribute values. Creating and maintaining such stored procedures can be a challenging task, however. The idea pursued in this paper is to create a programming language, as well as a compilation and execution environment that allows the user to mark parts of the application code for being automatically compiled to and later be executed as a stored procedure in the database instead of the execution environment of the actual application. This blurs the border between database and application and provides a natural and maintenance-friendly way for offloading latency sensitive parts of the code to the database system

A mobile tensegrity robot driven by rolled dielectric elastomer actuators

    No full text
This paper presents a tensegrity-based mobile robot powered by dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs), which provide high compliance and adaptability. The design consists of two V-shaped members linked by DEAs, enabling both symmetrical and asymmetrical actuation for varied movement patterns. Modal analysis and simulations show that uniform DEA actuation supports efficient linear motion, while asymmetrical actuation enables controlled circular paths. Experimental testing highlights the influence of voltage waveforms, frequencies, and surface types on speed, with optimal performance achieved using rectangular waveforms on low-friction surfaces. The robot reaches a top speed of 188 mm/s, among the highest reported for DEA-driven robots

Experimental Validation of a Full Polarimetric Channel Model with Frequency-Dependent Antenna Gain for Polarization Diversity Studies

    No full text
Autonomous driving, child presence detection, and digital car keys rely on precise localization. Therefore, accurate simulation environments are essential for designing radio systems and optimizing their positioning algorithms. A critical aspect of developing a reliable localization system is modeling the physical radio channel, which includes the transmitting antenna, the propagation medium, and the receiving antenna. However, existing channel models often overlook important physical effects of antennas, such as frequency dependence and polarization, leading to discrepancies between simulations and real-world measurements. To address this, the paper enhances full polarimetric channel models by incorporating the frequency dependence of both antennas and propagation channels. The theoretical model is validated through Vector Network Analyzer channel sounding measurements using reference antennas. This approach provides a foundation for polarization-based post-processing, ultimately improving positioning accuracy

Second-Order Dynamic Friction Model In Three-Dimensional Applications

    No full text
The second-order dynamic friction model (FrD2) is a reliable alternative to the LuGre model. It can compete with commercial friction models and has been successfully tested in standard one- and two-dimensional friction problems. The FrD2 approach is based on a fictitious bristle with a fictitious mass that automatically adjusts to viscoelastic properties. The FrD2 model approximates standard friction characteristics using a smooth analytical function that incorporates the Stribeck effect and a viscous component. The two-dimensional FrD2 version enables users to specify different bristle and friction properties in each direction. This working paper demonstrates how to apply the FrD2 model to three-dimensional friction problems, such as distributed contacts and ball joints

Active heat-loss compensated miniaturized pirani sensor chip

    No full text
Due to the limited measuring range of commercial Pirani sensors in lower pressure regimes, attempts are being made to extend the measuring range of the sensors. Our approach to extend the measuring range toward lower pressures is a micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) Pirani sensor with active heat compensation on the suspensions. The sensor element has the shape of a microhotplate and consists of a nickel heating meander embedded in two silicon nitride layers. The whole structure is built on a silicon wafer. The sensor element is suspended on all four corners of the substrate. On each of the suspensions, there is an additional heating structure that minimizes the heat flux from the hot sensor element toward the substrate. The sensor is driven at a constant temperature through a self-balancing Wheatstone bridge. A constant voltage is applied to the heating structures on the suspensions. It has been demonstrated that with these additional heaters, the sensitivity of the sensor can be increased in the high-vacuum regime. This enables reliable vacuum measurements down to 10−6 mbar

Experimental method for investigation of the emission pattern characteristics of individual field emission tips using a CMOS image sensor

    No full text
The emission pattern characteristics of individual silicon field emission tips were investigated using a CMOS image sensor. The quality of the image was improved by spatial and temporal averaging, so that individual emission centers could be identified and their temporal changes investigated. By mapping the emission current onto the image, the distribution of the current density on the image sensor could be calculated

SEPP – Security Education and Penetration-Testing Platform for IoT

    No full text
The Internet of Things (IoT) is becoming a major part of our everyday lives, offering convenience and smarter solutions, but also bringing significant security challenges. While theoretical knowledge in IoT security is essential, studies have shown that practical content can be an essential part of internalizing understanding. To address this, we developed the Security Education and Penetration-Testing Platform (SEPP) as the practical component of an existing IoT security course at the OTH Regensburg. SEPP uses real IoT devices like smart locks, cameras, and plugs, simulating a smart home environment to make learning interactive and engaging. Students can explore vulnerabilities, conduct penetration tests, and document their findings through structured exercises. By working on tasks like network scanning, analyzing data traffic, and simulating attacks, students gain a deeper understanding of IoT security risks. Initial tests show that this approach helps students apply their theoretical knowledge and significantly improve their practical skills. This paper explains how SEPP was built, the exercises it offers, and why it’s an important step forward in teaching IoT security effectively. Furthermore, we aim to share the findings and tasks from this paper with other universities, providing them with a solid foundation to teach practical IoT security knowledge in their own courses

Data augmentation of material properties for machine learning in industrial production - a case study in an automotive press shop

    No full text
In the context of industrial production, the utilisation of data recording and processing techniques is becoming increasingly prevalent across the manufacturing sector. The solutions integrate sensors, facilitate the transmission of data, and enable data-driven decision-making, thereby reducing downtime and optimising quality. However, challenges emerge due to the limited non-transferable data or models between processes. Alterations to the production process can render collected data invalid, resulting in restricted datasets and potential overfitting. To address these issues, techniques such as data augmentation are employed. This study aims to develop a data augmentation methodology applicable in dynamic, data-scarce production environments, enhancing the robustness of regressor predictions
