Analysis of the Energy Transition through Electrification Scenarios in the Ecuadorian Shrimp Farming Sector

    Get PDF
The shrimp sector in Ecuador is the second most important in the country and has begun a process of energy transition through the electrification of its operations, moving from the use of diesel for pumping water and aerating the farming ponds, towards the connection to the electrical grid. This energy transition leads to investments in infrastructure and generates an impact on different variables of the sector, such as its productivity, exports, greenhouse gas emissions, social impacts, among others. This study develops a methodology to analyze the energy transition of the sector through electrification scenarios. In Chapter 1, an introduction to the study to be carried out and the motivation are presented. Chapter 2 shows a review of the literature on the energy transition and the energy situation of the country and the shrimp farming sector. Chapter 3 establishes the scenario analysis framework, as well as proposes the use of the Energy Transition Index as inspiration to analyze the energy transition of the shrimp farming sector. Chapter 4 indicates the methodology to carry out the specific analysis and evaluation. Chapter 5 develops the nine established dimensions of the energy transition applied to the sector. Chapter 6 highlights the critical findings, and finally, in Chapter 7 the conclusions, recommendations and limitations of the study are provided

Digitalization of School Education - Understanding the Pains and Gains of Students and Teachers in Berlin: A Qualitative Analysis Regarding the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The global pandemic of the COVID-19 virus had an immense impact on various industries around the world. The education sector is just one among many where disruptive changes were implemented overnight. Most schools in Berlin switched to a virtual learning environment, called saLzH (schulisches angeleitetes Lernen zu Hause) without having time to prepare either students or teachers for the new situation. Although the gap between actual digital resources in Berlin’s schools and a functioning digital education infrastructure had previously been addressed by the DigitalPakt Schule, the situation was perceived difficult by all relevant stakeholder groups for various reasons. In this thesis, exploratory interviews of five students and five teachers are analyzed with a focus on identifying the pains and gains of each of those two groups with regards to digitalization of school education. The major gains of students identified here are: time flexibility, having more time for hobbies, less time spent commuting, independent learning, being motivated by digital tools, being able to learn at own pace, feeling more comfortable at home, having less pressure on oral performance, being more productive, increasing their media competency, increased teamwork, and learning transparency. The major pains of students identified here are: difficulties understanding new topics, dealing with technical issues, being distanced from their friends, and in general a dependence of their learning outcomes on the following factors: individual gadget availability, ability to learn independently, concentration span, social situation at home, and financial situation at home. The major gains of teachers with regards to teaching are: being able to provide differentiated tasks, and an increased learning transparency; personal gains of teachers are the acquisition of new skills, and an increased time flexibility. The major pains of teachers are: not being able to reach certain students (due to lack of gadgets / parents’ motivation), having to leave some students behind, more pressure due to constant availability / communication, an increased stress level, the pressure to learn new tools, having to rely on personal gadgets, and extra workload due to analogue and digital teaching simultaneously
