A Comprehensive Review of EV Lithium-Ion Battery Degradation

    Get PDF
Lithium-ion batteries with improved energy densities have made understanding the Solid Electrolyte Interphase (SEI) generation mechanisms that cause mechanical, thermal, and chemical failures more complicated. SEI processes reduce battery capacity and power. Thus, a review of this area's understanding is important. It is essential to know how batteries degrade in EVs to estimate battery lifespan as it goes, predict, and minimize losses, and determine the ideal time for a replacement. Lithium-ion batteries used in EVs mainly suffer two types of degradation: calendar degradation and cycling degradation. Despite the existence of several existing works in the literature, several aspects of battery degradation remain unclear or have not been analyzed in detail. This work presents a systematic review of existing works in the literature. The results of the present investigation provide insight into the complex relationships among various factors affecting battery degradation mechanisms. Specifically, this systematic review examined the effects of time, side reactions, temperature fluctuations, high charge/discharge rates, depth of discharge, mechanical stress, thermal stress, and the voltage relationship on battery performance and longevity. The results revealed that these factors interact in complex ways to influence the degradation mechanisms of batteries. For example, high charge currents and deep discharges were found to accelerate degradation, while low temperatures and moderate discharge depths were shown to be beneficial for battery longevity. Additionally, the results showed that the relationship between cell voltage and State-of-Charge (SOC) plays a critical role in determining the rate of degradation. Overall, these findings have important implications for the design and operation of battery systems, as they highlight the need to carefully manage a range of factors to maximize battery performance and longevity. The result is an analysis of the main articles published in this field in recent years. This work aims to present new knowledge about fault detection, diagnosis, and management of lithium-ion batteries based on battery degradation concepts. The new knowledge is presented and discussed in a structured and comprehensive way

Additive manufacturing by means of parametric robot programming

3D printing or additive manufacturing (AM) is now becoming a common technology in industry. The research activities in this area are constantly increasing, because with the high level of automation and the possibility to produce individual and complex structures, the advantages of additive manufacturing are promising. Most materials used in the construction industry can be used for additive manufacturing, for example steel and concrete. The print head (for example, a welding torch in the AM of steel) is mainly led by industrial robots, whose movements must be transferred from the 3D geometry files to be manufactured. In contrast to all-in-one systems, where hardware, software and printed material are coordinated, most robot-based AM systems are made of components from different manufacturers and branches. The objects to be manufactured are complex and the manufacturing parameters, which significantly influence the geometry and quality of the manufactured part, are manifold. This makes the workflow from the 3D model to the finished object difficult, especially because it is almost impossible to predict the exact manufactured structure geometry or layer height (which would be indispensable for accurate slicing). During the manufacturing process, deviations between the target and actual geometry can occur. In this paper, parametric robot programming (PRP) is presented, which allows flexible motion programming, and a quick and easy reaction to deviations between target and actual geometry during the manufacturing process. Complex geometries are divided into iso-curves whose mathematical functions are determined by means of polynomial regression. The robot can calculate the coordinates to be approached from these functions itself. This allows a simple adjustment of the manufacturing coordinates during the process as soon as target–actual deviations occur. The workflow from the file to the manufactured object is explained. The principle of PRP is transferable and applicable to all robot manufacturers and all conceivable printing processes. In the following article, it will be presented using wire + arc additive manufacturing, in which welding robots or portals can be used to produce steel structures with high deposition rates. Furthermore, the project “AM Bridge 2019” is presented, in which a steel bridge was manufactured in situ over a little creek and the presented PRP was applied

Assessment of agricultural residues for small-scale biogas plants and adoption drivers: a case study of the Fès-Meknès region in Morocco

Small-scale biogas systems hold promise as reliable renewable energy sources in developing nations; however, adequate and consistent supply of feedstock remains a challenge. Agricultural residue, due to their lack of competition with food crops for resources, is touted as a dependable feedstock choice. This article therefore examines agricultural residues as potential biogas plant feedstocks in the Fès-Meknès region of Morocco, using a structured farm survey to evaluate livestock types, crop varieties, and residue utilization. Additionally, the study explores the challenges and drivers influencing biogas technology adoption in Morocco. Findings indicate a predominance of small-scale farms with livestock (averaging 11 cattle, 45 sheep, and 20 chicken) and mainly subsistence crop production, making these farms suitable candidates for small-scale biogas plants. Key barriers to adoption include a lack of awareness about the technology, along with technical and financial constraints. However, raising awareness, establishing demonstration plants, and offering financial and non-financial incentives are identified as potential drivers of adoption. This research provides a foundation for implementing biogas technologies in the case study area and other developing nations, guiding researchers and governmental and non-governmental organizations in disseminating small-scale biogas systems as a reliable energy source and a method for converting agricultural residues into sustainable energy (biogas) and fertilizer. Biomechanical analysis of the right elevated glenohumeral joint in violinists during legato-playing

BACKGROUND: Many statistics reveal that violin players suffer most often from musculoskeletal disorders compared to musicians of other instrument groups. A common phenomenon, especially observed in violin beginners, is the tendency to elevate the right shoulder during playing the violin. This can probably lead to serious disorders in long-term practice with repetitive movements. OBJECTIVE: For this reason, this study investigated the relationship between the right shoulder elevation and the force in the right glenohumeral joint during violin playing. It was hypothesized that the forces in the right glenohumeral joint are higher during playing with the right shoulder raised compared to playing in normal posture. METHODS: Motion capture data from four experienced violinists was recorded and processed by means of musculoskeletal simulation to get the force and elevation angle while playing with raised shoulder and in normal position. RESULTS: The results indicate that the absolute values of the resulting force, as well as the forces in the mediolateral, inferosuperior, and anteroposterior directions, are higher in playing the violin with the shoulder raised than in a normal posture. CONCLUSIONS: Elevating the right shoulder while playing the violin may pose a potential problem
