    No full text
Given the dominance of a virtual and cyberspace reality of social networks, artificial intelligence (AI) and new technologies; there where the ways of perceiving, feeling, thinking, loving, dreaming, idealizing are diluted and synthesized; until reaching paroxysm, madness, and falling into the seduction of images and languages loaded with simulation, which are exercised from the centers of global economic power and have control and dominion of the "clouds"; They are induced ideologies founded on a supposed freedom to decide and think; It is true that there are still options in the operational forms of the networks and media of communication and information, but they are very limited; because they sneak in and transcend the control limits of people, of individuals, of cyberspace communities, of the global companies that own the clouds; It must be said, clouds often dissolve, fade into principles and rules that do not always guide human beings to decide appropriately; those that are hypothetically based on norms of a general, but not universal, nature, which provide, in a certain way, certainty and security as a construction of meaning and meaning.

From peripheries to neighbourhoods: measuring urban insertion of social housing projects

    No full text
The past two decades have witnessed a notable increase in affordable housing production across Latin America, along with persistent challenges regarding habitability and access to urban amenities. At the same time, there has been a shift in urban dynamics, characterised by the diversification of peripheries and the emergence of sub-centralities, challenging conventional notions of urban marginalisation. It underscores the need for a deeper understanding of urban insertion as the attention moves from macro-scale segregation to micro-scale analysis. Amidst this context, urban insertion remains a subject of dispute and ambiguity within the literature, often conflated with peripheralisation and segregation. Addressing this gap, we advance toward a concept of urban insertion, proposing an analytical framework that integrates multiple criteria from diverse disciplinary perspectives. This framework was empirically validated in the metropolitan area of Curitiba (Brazil) by analysing 55 social housing developments constructed over the past decade. The findings yield valuable insights and pragmatic guidelines for evaluating urban insertion and informing policy decisions in similar contexts

Land use changes of coastal wetlands using remote sensing. A case study of Muthurajawela & Anawilundawa wetlands, Sri Lanka

    No full text
Wetlands are confronting significant threats arising from human activities, particularly anthropogenic influences. The alteration of land use and land cover in and around wetlands serves as a clear indicator of the escalating human pressure on these ecosystems. This study employs Geographical Information System (GIS) and Remote Sensing to conduct a spatiotemporal analysis, comparing land use changes in both an urban wetland (Muthurajawela) and a peri-urban wetland (Anawilundawa) and their respective buffer areas in Sri Lanka. The study reveals noteworthy transformations in the extent of water bodies, thick vegetation, other vegetation, settlements, and open areas during the period from 2000 to 2021. The observed changes are particularly profound in the urban wetland. In the Muthurajawela wetland, the core habitat characterized by open water experienced significant conversions into settlements and infrastructure, resulting in an 81% reduction from 2000 to 2010 and a 30% reduction from 2010 to 2021. Similarly, water bodies in the Anawilundawa wetland reduced in size by 12% from 2000 to 2010 and 16% from 2010 to 2021. The results highlight the urban wetland's more substantial transformation from natural areas to anthropogenic areas, necessitating immediate remedial and restoration action. Given this context, it is imperative to delve further into the trajectories, causes, and drivers of land use changes. This deeper investigation is crucial for developing effective wetland management strategies that support sustainability, environmental stability, and the continued functioning of ecosystems. &nbsp

Highlighting circular cities trends in urban planning. A review in support of future research tendencies

    No full text
Circular economy is seen as an opportunity of overcoming the traditional linear model of consumption and production based on the “take-make-dispose” model, in favour of a more sustainable use of resources. It is acknowledged that the city scale is relevant in this transition towards circularity, even if there is a lack of implementation of the circular city through plans and policies. A higher understanding of the interrelations between circular economy and urban planning is therefore needed. This study, through a scoping review and a bibliometric analysis, allowed to systematize and analyse the knowledge about the existing trends in planning circular cities and to identify gaps for future research. What emerged is that a methodology to integrate circular economy principles into urban planning tools and procedures still does not exist in literature, even though some recurrent decision-making framework are frequently used and the topic is currently under debate

Redesigning “schools squares” for a public city

    No full text
The conquest of new public spaces is one of the main options in processes of urban regeneration. It seems essential in contemporary cities, since our life occurs more and more indoors and in private contexts, reducing the role of public and outdoor activities. Among cultural-based urban regeneration projects that operate within those spaces waiting for an improvement of the existing public functions, schools can play a particularly prominent role, as well spread and symbolic institutions with an educational mission for young people. From this perspective, the paper discusses how school squares, namely the urban areas close to the entrance of schools, can be designed and regenerated to produce a real public space where the city meets the school and vice versa. The paper presents a methodology to classify different typologies of school squares, based on an extensive analysis on over 600 school squares, located in the provinces of Milan, Turin and Varese. On the basis of such classification, some guidelines are discussed in order to propose a strategy to redesign these symbolic spaces and to conquer them as public areas

I cultural loci nello spazio pubblico urbano: implicazioni con la sostenibilità

    No full text
The paper looks at four examples of multiscalar cultural practices from the city of Bengaluru, India that play out in the urban public realm. The study locates, defines, and describes the spatial loci of cultural practices in the city and proceeds to examine the transformations in public settings such as levels of control, access, and spatial extent, brought forth by these cultural practices. The latter part of the study analyzes how transformed public settings contribute to social sustainability. A two-pronged approach that establishes the heterogeneity of actors and activities followed by an assessment of the social sustainability impacts of cultural practices using qualitative techniques, helps establish the link between culture and sustainability in the urban public realm. The study reiterates the need to view cultural practices as tools of social resilience and integrate them into the master planning processQuesto articolo esamina l’impatto trasformativo delle pratiche culturali sulla sfera pubblica urbana a Bangalore, in India, concentrandosi sui loro legami con la sostenibilità sociale.

Social and educational potential of Citizen Science

Citizen science is an innovative approach to involve people in research activities guided by professional scientists and helps bridge the gap between science and society. The development of mobile technologies has favored the growth of citizen science so much that the number of citizen science projects has grown in recent years as well as the "citizen scientists". The motivations that push people to participate in projects are often related to personal interest in the topics covered, but often also to altruism and the satisfaction of carrying out activities useful to society. Citizen science is therefore a promising model both from an educational point of view, to improve scientific literacy and from an educational point of view, to stimulate civic engagement. This article indeed sought to highlight the potential of integrating the participatory dimension and the scientific dimension into the educational context. Citizen science in fact allows the development of innovative teaching, in which students use their knowledge and skills to carry out concrete activities for the common good, combined with a scientific dimension of applying disciplinary contents to concrete and proactive learning contexts. The article finally presents some citizen science projects that have been experimented at school in Italy focusing mainly on environmental issues where students are engaged in the collection and observation of scientific data and in their critical interpretation

The article presents the Manifesto “Una scuola” (2014, 2018), proposing a comparison with the school of Barbiana, 100 years after the birth of Don Lorenzo Milani, and the coeval Manifesto of Avanguardie Educative (Indire). In particular, through the five key dimensions of the Manifesto “Una scuola” (Encounters, Contexts, Styles, Possibilities, Languages), an analysis is conducted of the challenges shared by the school of the 1960s and the contemporary school in order to rethink the school of today and tomorrow in an innovative way.L’articolo presenta il Manifesto Una scuola (2014, 2018), proponendone un confronto con la scuola di Barbiana, a 100 anni dalla nascita di don Lorenzo Milani, e al coevo Manifesto di Avanguardie Educative (Indire).

Franciscans and Mathematics. The Case of Mariotto Guiducci, Friar Minor and Abacus Master (1427- Post 1496

The paper focuses on the figure of Mariotto Guiducci, a Florentine franciscan friar and abacus master from the 15th century, author of a mathematical treatise preserved in the National Library of Florence. By archival and bibliographical records, the case study may offer further insights about the topic, recently revived, on the relationship between Franciscanism and the mathematical sciences between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The article is divided in two parts: the first opens a glimpse into the Guiducci family and the teaching of practical mathematics in Florence and Prato, hinting at the convent life and experience of Mariotto; the second part is dedicated to the autograph codex and the Libro d’arismetricha, expression of a mathematical culture typical of the abacus tradition

Bagnoli: cyclical narratives of failed reclamation, unfinished projects and ownership changes vs. incremental regeneration scenarios

The urban, design and ownership story of the former industrial plain of Bagnoli draws one of the most intertwined, inextricable and difficult to deal with narratives in the recent history not only of Naples, but of the entire country, crossing the economic interests, but also the environmental, social and political ones of an incredible place for its strategic and landscape position. The contribution tries to build a reflection starting from the recognition, albeit synthetic and incomplete, of the events that from the beginning of the twentieth century to today have given us an area in a suspended condition, due to the sometimes conflicting decisions of the many actors who in over thirty years have grappled with the "Bagnoli question". An area that today presents strong contrasts and contradictions, on which territorial and planning arrangements have been imposed over time, and in which instead highly dynamic landscapes are juxtaposed and contrasted with other tenaciously static ones.A geographical area that suggests and stimulates the possibility of investigating new pacts between the city and the cultural value of its past, also the subject of educational exercises conducted in some Laboratories of DiARC UNINA (a.y. 2022/23) in which, through a strongly multidisciplinary dimension, an incremental design strategy was shared, capable of reasoning on differentiated times and imagining to reactivate "the park by design and functionally autonomous parts that already exists", but aiming at a unitary desig
