    Get PDF
The paper offers a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the main linguistic phenomena contained in the letters written by Anna, a semiliterate woman affected by tarantism, to the anthropologist Annabella Rossi during the 1960s. The analysis will show the evolution of the lexicon within the corpus, with a focus on the description of some of the discursive dimensions that emerge in Anna’s writing. In accordance with New Literacy Studies, we will demonstrate how the intertwining of oral and written domains allows Anna to both write texts and do things such as maintaining her relationship with Annabella. Finally, the research will display that some specific linguistic and textual features of semiliterate writings which appear to deviate from the norms of written texts, instead constitute functional correlates of the speech modality.L’articolo propone un’analisi quantitativa e qualitativa dei principali fenomeni linguistici contenuti nelle lettere scritte negli anni Sessanta da Anna, una donna semicolta affetta da tarantismo, all’antropologa Annabella Rossi.

This article examines vernacular renderings of Cicero’s shorter moral works between ca. 1330 and ca. 1500 from the vantage point of manuscript production and circulation. Excluding the Somnium Scipionis, no fewer than twenty-one translations of the De amicitia, the De senectute, the De officiis and the Paradoxa stoicorum were produced in Italy, France and the Iberian Peninsula, of which eleven are of the De officiis and the Paradoxa stoicorum.

    No full text
This article aims to establish afresh the stages of the evolution (c. 1350-c. 1500) of translations into Catalan of classical works useful for the political formation of the nobility and private citizens. The first stage is centred around the royal family (until 1410), via the courts of northern France and Avignon (section 1). In his youth, King Alfonso of Aragon (r. 1416-1458) endeavoured to recover the earlier translations (and the French manuscripts that originated them), but no new Catalan versions of historical works or moral philosophy through royal patronage are recorded (section 2). Instead, from c. 1425 onwards, we witness the growing dissemination of Cicero’s moral treatises (especially De officiis and Paradoxa stoicorum) thanks to the initiative of private citizens; this stage is characterised both by direct Italian influence and the prominent role played by lawyers and other men with school education (section 3). The following section (4) highlights the central role of the newly established court in Naples in 1443 in the formation of several individuals responsible for the publication in Catalan of some snippets of humanistic knowledge (by Pier Candido Decembrio, Guarino de Verona or the Panormita) from 1480. In section 5 the effect (not always positive) of incunabular printing on this output is noted; as an example, a Catalan version of the Liber de vita et moribus philosophorum (Naples 1499), which includes a fragment from Ambrogio Traversari, remained unpublished.

Building type classification using deep learning for transport planning

    No full text
The transportation and land use sectors are closely interdependent, and real-life circumstances often exhibit substantial reciprocal influences. Currently, efforts are being made to enhance transportation and land use sustainably; hence to achieve sustainability, it is necessary to have well-optimized plans and implementations for the advancements, which consequently leads to an increased demand for vast amounts of data. Conducting manual surveys to collect data on various types of buildings is considerably costly, requires much labor, and is time-consuming. Remote sensing technology has demonstrated significant promise to encompass a greater extent in a reduced timeframe, as well as to engage in thorough data collection and effectively manage and analyze the acquired data. This work centers on constructing a classification system that categorizes buildings depending on their use, specifically distinguishing between residential and non-residential structures. The classification challenge is accomplished through instance segmentation using the state-of-the-art YOLOV8 model architecture and remotely sensed images. The main objective of this project is to create base maps for travel analysis zones (TAZs) using identified buildings. To properly align the output images generated by the model, geographical data is appended to the output images derived from the original input images
