Practices of (de)legitimation in world politics

    No full text
This forum proposes a practice-oriented approach to (de)legitimation processes in world politics. Drawing on international practice theory and visual IR, among other fields, our approach offers an important extension of existing literature on (de)legitimation that mostly concentrates on discursive (de)legitimation. Instead, this forum focuses on a broader variety of practices of (de)legitimation, such as bodily gestures and visual (de)legitimation practices, including as communicated via (social) media. The forum’s six contributions demonstrate the significance and conceptual promise of our approach by showcasing various conceptual entry points and empirical illustrations. Matthias Ecker-Ehrhardt analyzes the everyday legitimation practices of international organization officials acting as the “personal face” of institutional processes on social media. Anna Geis examines the Taliban’s symbolic and embodied practices of self-legitimation during the Doha negotiations with the United States in 2019–2020. Subsequently, Stanislav Budnitsky conceptualizes the reoccurring practice of verbally and physically assaulting foreign experts on Russian televised political talk shows as embodied legitimation practices of Russia’s anti-Western geopolitical agenda. David Shim and Laurenz Krumbacher draw attention to the everyday, visualized legitimation practices of climate activists on TikTok, emphasizing their performative dimension. Frank Gadinger turns to Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s social media-oriented public performances in parliaments around the world. Nora Stappert and Siddharth Tripathi conclude the forum with a discussion of limitations, remaining challenges, and future research avenues, including using decolonial and postcolonial approaches. Combined, our forum opens an avenue for future research that considers existing and new forms of (de)legitimation in global affairs through the lens of practice while emphasizing the crucial role of legitimacy and normativity in international practices.Vo

A dynamic immersed boundary method for simulating an adaptive nozzle generating discrete wind gusts

    No full text
The recently developed wind gust generator, the adaptive nozzle (Wood and Breuer, 2025) , features a nozzle with a fully rotatable upper contour, enabling a smooth gust generation with low unwanted flow disturbances. While preserving the underlying gust-generation principle of its predecessor, the new design significantly reduces pressure losses caused by flow blockage and preserves the original horizontal trajectory of the flow along the streamwise direction. While experiments have validated the improved design, a comprehensive numerical analysis is crucial to resolve the three-dimensional flow fields across the entire computational domain. This shall also facilitate capturing the resulting transient aerodynamic loads on a wind tunnel specimen — quantities difficult to measure experimentally. To accurately capture the complex flow dynamics, high- fidelity large-eddy simulations are conducted, modeling the nozzle’s upper contour as a dynamic immersed boundary (IB). A curvilinear Eulerian grid is employed to ensure both efficient and precise spatial resolution of the problem. The moving least-squares (MLS) version of the direct forcing IB approach (Vanella and Balaras, 2009) is used to construct an IB kernel for each Lagrangian marker. Additionally, the MLS approach is also applied to construct one-sided kernel functions for Lagrangian points near the boundaries of the computational domain. Challenges related to the efficient IB simulation on curvilinear grids are addressed, and a solution is proposed within the MLS framework. The predicted results are analyzed in detail and validated against the experimental data by Wood and Breuer (2025) , providing insights into the effectiveness of the new design in generating controlled wind gusts.Vo

Updating descriptive sensory evaluation of chicken: proposing new protocols and statistical analysis

    No full text
This is an open access article under the CC BY-NC-ND license (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/)Descriptive sensory chicken evaluations are mostly conducted using prepared sous-vide breasts. Sustainable poultry systems in response to climate change and biodiversity loss require a closer examination of existing sensory evaluation methods. To address the new requirements, we present sensory evaluation results from two different projects. Using skin, breast, thighs, and minced variations, we demonstrate (1) how chicken carcasses can be evaluated holistically using more than the breast, (2) how animal-specific differences can be eliminated and (3) whether a classical quantitative descriptive analysis (QDA) and the more cost efficient and rapid method of Napping creates better results. This enables us to provide statistical guidance for selecting the sensory evaluation method and design for future sensory evaluations. This opens new evaluation criteria for local breeds and alternative husbandry systems. Furthermore, a new approach for analyzing Napping data is proposed. The implications of our results extend to breeders, policymakers, and scholars, providing information about sensory evaluation of chicken meat to effectively update criteria and methods.A

    No full text
Vo

Experimental study on a novel wind gust generator based on an adaptive nozzle design

    No full text
This is an open access article under the CC BY license (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/).The paper presents a novel design of a wind gust generator based on an adaptive nozzle for wind tunnel applications and its experimental investigation. The key feature of this design is the movable upper wall of the nozzle, which adjusts the cross-section of the nozzle's outlet. For this purpose, the upper contour of the nozzle is connected to a programmable and fast-moving tooth belt axis, enabling rapid changes in the nozzle geometry to generate reproducible horizontal wind gusts that develop along a flat ground plate. The experimental setup primarily relies on particle-image velocimetry as an optical measurement technique, supported by a constant-temperature anemometer and pressure taps at specific locations. The gusts are generated using a well-defined motion pattern of the movable nozzle, following a (1-cos)-type signal. A combination of velocity and surface pressure measurements is carried out, analyzing the gust development at various positions along the ground plate in streamwise direction. Both data sets are used to quantify the adaptive nozzle's potential as an effective tool for wind gust generation, facilitating future studies on highly dynamic fluid-structure interactions under wind gust load. Additionally, the well-designed experiment is planned to serve as a valuable validation case for numerical methods.Vo
