Comparative Study of Emulsifier in Mellorine
Aims: Mellorine is a type of frozen dessert such as ice cream in which part or all of the milk fat is replaced with vegetable fat with low-fat content. Study Design: This research was prepared using a completely randomized design method with several factors, namely the addition of alginate, agar, guar gum, carrageenan, gelatin, and casein
Place and Duration of Study: The present study was conducted in Department of Aquatic Product Processing and Storage, Pangkep State Polytechnic of Agriculture. The duration of research is 6 month i.e from April, 2022 – September, 2022.
Methodology: 400 mL low-fat milk, 200 mL of mango fruit juice, 100 g of sugar, and 300 mL of water The pieces of fruit were crushed using a blender with the addition of a bit of water (fruit:water = 2:1). While waiting for fruit blending, emulsifier with each treatment were heated with 50 mL of water until boiling. Then the water (according to a predetermined ratio) is heated, and the sugar is mixed together until dissolved. After that, the liquid milk and emulsifier ingredients are mixed with 15% fruit while stirring slowly for 10 minutes. The combined material is then cooled at 4°C for 24 h. After that, the ingredients that have been put together and cooled (fruit, liquid milk, stabilizer, and sugar) are stirred and homogenized with a mixer for 15 minutes. Mellorine that has been standardized, then packed in a cup. Then the mellorine was frozen in the freezer at -20°C for ± 24 h. The parameters tested were organoleptic, viscosity, overrun, melting time, fluid stability.
Results: Alginate emulsifier produces the best mellorine with an organoleptic assessment having a color (5.4), taste (7), odor (6.33), texture (6.33). Physical test resulted with Viscosity (271 cP), Emulsion stability (100%), Melting time (15 minutes) and Over Run value (21.9%).
Conclusion: The use of different types of emulsifiers in the production of mellorine affects the organoleptic value, over run, emulsion stability, viscosity and melting time
The Effect of Sudden Rise in Salinity on Survival Rates and Salinity Tolerance Ability of Ctenopharyngodon idella
This study aimed to identify the extent of the effect of sudden rise in salinity on survival rates of Ctenopharyngodon idella and determine the lethal concentration (LC50) that kills half of the number of fish. The fish were suddenly exposed to lethal concentrations (LC50 values) of: 4, 8, 12, and 16 g / l at a weight of 31.4 ± 2.2 g, as well as hypertonic water at the rate of (0.1 g of LC50), which was considered as a controlling sample. The (LC50) were prepared by adding a known weight of dried sea salt in a liter of chlorine-free hypertonic water until the required lethal concentrations (LC50) were reached. The results of the survival rates experiment showed that the survival rate of Ctenopharyngodon idella reached 90%, 20% and 0% at the lethal concentration (LC50) of 8, 12 and 16 g /I respectively, while the survival rate was 100% in both hypertonic water and the lethal concentration (LC50) of 4 g / l.
The results of the experiment to determine the lethal concentration (LC50) that kills half of the number of fish also showed that the LC50 in Ctenopharyngodon idella reached 9.68 g / l during 96 hours of sudden exposure to LC50 at the rate of 0.1, 4, 8, 12 and 16 g / l. During the experiment, the fish were fed on food ration containing 32% protein, at the rafe of 3% of the weight of fishs\u27 body
Analysis of Society\u27s Fish Consumption in Cilaku Cianjur District Area
This study aimed to analyze the characteristics of fish consumers, analyze the level of favorite and types of fish that were often consumed by the people, and analyze the factors that affect fish consumption which the research was conducted in Cilaku Subdistrict on September – December 2020. The research used a case study method with used primary and secondary data. The resulted of primary data were from interviewed with 100 respondents using purposive sampling method as a research sample. Secondary data was obtained from relevant agencies. The analysis used descriptive and rank spearman test method to analyze the motivational influence for fish price, family influence, and fish quality. The results showed that consumers who buy and consume fish in Cilaku subdistrict were generally women who has a family in aged < 43 years with a high school education level and work as employee. Buyers and fish eaters in Cilaku Subdistrict had an income of Rp 2,100,000 - Rp 3,000,000. Totally, the 57% of respondents in Cilaku Subdistrict like fish to be consumed. The type of fish which usually they consume were 58% of freshwater fish, 27% of seawater fish, and 15% of processed fish. The factors that most influence fish purchasing decisions according to spearman rank tests were the influence of culture, fish prices, consumer family influences, and fish quality
A Mini-Review: Effect of Moringa oleifera Leaves for Fish Health
Disease attack is the biggest obstacle in fish farming activities and is very detrimental to cultivators. Disease control is an important factor to be recognized. The use of herbs is an alternative for disease control that is relatively safe. Moringa oleifera plant is known to contain several secondary metabolite compounds, namely achaloid, flavonoids, tannins and steroids which have antibacterial and antioxidant properties. Several M. oleifera treatment studies are used to treat and prevent fish infected with disease. The purpose of this article is to describe the compounds contained in M. oleifera and their effect for fish health. M. oleifera has a positive effect on fish health, it can be used to treat and prevent disease in fish
Some Biological Observations on Rearing Juveniles of Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus (Linnaeus, 1758)) in Fixed Cages at Gezira Irrigation Canals, Sudan
This study was conducted at Gezira Irrigation canal to evaluate the growth performance and the effect of water tempetrature to the culture ability of Nile tilapia juveniles for 120 days. Monosex Oreochromis niloticus sized 8.17±0.33 g were carried out from Mabroka fish farm and stocked in 400 m³ fixed cages at a density of 50 fish/m³. Fish were fed daily with a commercial pellet diet with 33% protein concentration at a feeding rate of 3% of their body weight per day. Feed was given twice a day (09:00 morning and 16:00 evening). Fish growth parameters, water quality analysis have measured every two weeks. The final body weight of fish was 40.23±1.04 grams and the mean daily gained weight was 0.29 g/day, while the survival rate of fish was 99.7%±6.7 and the Food Conversion Ratio (FCR) was 3.8. The average value of temperature, pH and transparency were 23°C, 7.5, 31.5 cm respectively. The results of the study revealed that there is a possibility to culture tilapia juvenile at stocking density of 50/m³ in fixed cages in Irrigation Canals, for the effect of water temperature on fish growth performance the results obtained that no more effect on fish growth during study period
Effects of Feeding Frequency on Growth Performance and Production of Labeo rohita (Hamilton, 1822) Reared in Cage
Optimum feeding schedule is one of the main things for the proper growth of fish and other animals. A study was conducted to optimize the effects of different feeding frequencies on growth performance and production of Rui (Labeo rohita) under pond cage culture system in Rajshahi, Bangladesh. Labeo rohita with an average weight of 302.23±4.07g (mean ± SD) were randomly stocked in 9 cages at 30 fish/cage in all the treatment. Fish were fed (4% of body weight) a commercial floating feed with three different feeding schedules: feeding of fish thrice daily in T1treatment; twice in T2 treatment and once in T3 treatment. Water quality parameters were measured during the study period. The physico-chemical parameters of pond water were within suitable ranges for fish culture in cages. The obtained values of the water quality parameters were temperature 28.26 to 28.46°C, pH 6.91 to 6.94, DO 5.04 to 5.33 mg/l, CO2 2.95 to 3.02 mg/L. The mean final weight gain was significantly highest in T1 (345.05 g) a followed by T2 (324.66 g) and T3 (257.82 g). The Specific growth rate (SGR) value were significantly higher in T1 treatment (0.91% bwd-1; Body weight per day) than T2 (0.87% bwd-1) and T3 treatment (0.73% bwd-1). The feed conversion ratio (FCR) value was significantly lower in T1 fish group (2.72) than other two T2 (2.84) and T3 (3.44) treatments. The fish productions were 18.13, 17.55 and 15.67 kg/cage/cycle in T1, T2 and T3 respectively. The highest net profit was found (Bangladeshi Taka, BDT 1445.38) in T1 compared to T2 (BDT 1329.24) and T3 treatment (BDT 937.99). The cost benefit ratio (CBR) was significantly higher in T1 (0.57) than T2 (0.53) and T3 (0.37). The feeding schedule three times in a day was most suitable than other two schedules
Analysis of the Role of Fish Basket Women towards Household Income in Eretan Wetan Village, Indramayu District, West Java
The role of the fish basket woman is not only as a housewife but also as a breadwinner, thus the fish basket woman has a dual role in her family. Fish basket women help their husbands work to be able to meet family needs. This study aims to analyze household income as well know the motivation to work of women as fish baskets in increasing working household income and know the factors that affect the income of fish basket women in increasing household income in Eretan Wetan Village, Indramayu Regency, West Java. The research method used in this research is a case study and interviews using a questionnaire. The sampling technique used an accidental sampling method with a total of 50 respondents and collecting data using observation techniques, structured interviews, and documentation techniques. The results showed that the role of women with fish baskets on household income in Eretan Wetan Village, Indramayu Regency, West Java was quite significant by obtaining an average income of IDR 1,676,135 per month. Factors that affect the income of working basket women include helping their husbands, wages that are not appropriate, helping household income and the husband\u27s income is uncertain. The coefficient of determination shown by Nagelkerke R-Square, age, education level, number of family members, husband\u27s permission, and husband\u27s income affect women\u27s interest in working by 100.0%. Women’s interest in working is not influenced by any other factors included in the research mode
Ontogenetic Shifts in Oxygen Uptake in Common Mudskipper (Periophthalmus kalolo) and its Role in Microhabitat Selection
Aims: The common mudskipper, Periophthalmus kalolo is a tropical, amphibious fish that utilizes both air and water as a respiratory medium. Adult oxygen uptake in water and air is well studied, but requirements of post-metamorphosed fish are virtually unknown. Our study quantifies how ontogenetic shifts across mudskipper life stage affects microhabitat choice.
Study Design: metabolic rates in air and water were estimated for common mudskippers with mass values from 0.03 to 28.9 grams. Fish in each media were divided into 5 standard length classes (≤ 2.00, 2.01-4.00, 4.01-6.00, 6.01-8.00, ≥ 8.01 cm). Oxygen consumption for each class was calculated as the mean individual oxygen consumption for the group.
Place and Duration of Study: Hoga Research Laboratory, Wakatobi National Park, Sulawesi, Indonesia, between June 14 and August 26, 2005.
Methodology: Gilson manometry, and flow-through respirometery was used to determine respective aerial and aquatic oxygen uptake values for common mudskippers.
Results: Mudskipper lengths varied by an order of magnitude (1.0 to 10.3 cm) and mass varied by three orders of magnitude (0.03 to 17.3 g). Mass-adjusted aerial metabolic rates of fish 2.00 cm or less in length, consumed up to ten times more oxygen than larger fish. whereas, aerial consumption values for size classes 2.01 cm and above did not differ significantly from each other (ANOVA: F4,112 = 40.29, P < 0.0001; SNK, α = 0.05).
Metabolic rates of submerged fish fell into two statistically distinct subsets. mudskippers with lengths of 4.00 cm or less had significantly higher metabolic rates than fish in remaining size classes; however, mean oxygen uptake values of fish within subsets did not differ significantly (ANOVA: F4,87 = 6.89, P < 0.0001; SNK, α = 0.05). When oxygen consumption values at each size class were compared, only the smallest mudskipper size class (£ 2.00 cm) differed significantly between air and water (t-test: df = 34, t = 3.44, P < 0.0001). Mudskippers 2 cm in standard length or smaller consumed over seven times more oxygen in air than water. All other size classes had similar rates of oxygen uptake in air and water and air:water oxygen uptake ratios fell to approximately 1:1.
Conclusions: (1) Common mudskippers select different mangal habitats based on developmental life stage. (2) Small, post-metamorphosed fish <2 mm in standard length, prefer cool shaded mangal areas, whereas, larger mudskippers utilize sun-exposed zones.
(3) Post-metamorphosed fish, consume 10X more oxygen than all other size groups, confirming that juveniles are well suited to aerial respiration oxygen shortly after hatching. (4) Emerged post-metamorphosed fish exploit cooler, wetter pool habitats, thereby ameliorating problems of desiccation, excretion, and/or predation. (5) Ontogenetic shifts are a key life-history event in P. kalolo that promotes wider mangrove habitat use, and plays an important role in establishing common mudskipper as a key mangal species
Analysis of Consumer Preferences in Selecting Processed Fish Products (Case Study in Cicadas Market, Bandung City, Indonesia)
This study aims to analyze processed fish products which are preferred by the consumers in the Cicadas Market in Bandung City, (Country?) and to analyze the attributes that consumers consider the most in choosing processed fish products in the Cicadas Market in Bandung City. The method used in this research is a case study method using descriptive statistics. Data were collected by direct interviewi of the respondents who were in Cicadas Market using a questionnaire. The attributes observed were packaging color, type of packaging, product color, taste, and price. The questionnaire used has been tested using validity and reliability tests. Respondent characteristics and consumer behavior were analyzed descriptively, while preferences for processed fish products, such as Tuna fish, fish balls, and pempek, as well as the attributes in processed fish products that consumers consider in choosing processed fish products, were analyzed using Chi-Square. The results showed that the processed fish product which is the consumer preference in Cicadas Market is tuna fish mackarel. The most important aspects to consider in choosing Tuna fish mackarel product include the green packaging color, the type of packaging is the leaf, the natural product color, the spicy taste, and the tuna mackarel price of Rp. 15,000 - Rp. 20,000. The things that are most considered in choosing a fish meatball product are the color of the clear packaging, the type of packaging is plastic, the color of the natural product, the original taste, and the price of the processed fish meatball product <Rp. 10,000. The most important consideration in choosing a pempek product is the color of the clear packaging, the type of packaging is plastic, the color of the natural product, the spicy taste, and the price of the pempek product is Rp. 15,000 - Rp. 20,000
Helminth Parasites in the Gastrointestinal Tract of Oreochromis niloticus (Nile Tilapia) in Dadin Kowa Dam, Yamaltu Deba Local Government Area, Gombe State, Nigeria
Aim: The aim of the study is to identify helminth parasites in the gastrointestinal tract of Oreochromis niloticus in Dadin Kowa Dam, Yamaltu Deba Local Government Area, Gombe State.
Study design: Oreochromis niloticus fish species were randomly obtained from the local fishermen in the landing sites; between 7:00am-10:00am weekly.
Place and duration of study: The study was carried out at Dadin Kowa Dam in Yamaltu Deba Local Government Area of Gombe State between the months of March to June, 2019.
Methodology: 60 Oreochromis niloticus (Nile Tilapia) were obtained and examined for gastro intestinal parasites. Sex of the fish was determined by the presence and absent of an intromittent organ. The total length, standard length and body weight was measured using standard method. Dissection was done using standard procedure and the Parasites recovered were identified using the helminth parasites of fish identification guide.
Results: Out of the 60 fish species examined. (23 female and 37 males), 21 (35.00%) were infected and were observed to habour six (6) endoparasites; viz nematodes, Cestodes and trematodes. The results show that there was a significant difference between infection rate, total length and weight of fish with female species having relatively higher percentage prevalence 11(43.50%) than the males 10 (29.70%). It was observed that the prevalence of parasitic infection increase with length and weight of the fish.
Conclusion: Presence of these fish helminth parasites may lead to devaluation in protein constant in the body of the fish. The work therefore recommends water quality assessment of Dams as it is one of the factors that bring about the increase in parasitic infection
