Responses of Different Explants of Sweet Potato on Modified MS and LS Based Nutrient Media in vitro
A good number of reports on sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.) tissue culture using different tissues of various cultivars with varying level of efficiency and reproducibility are available but callus induction and plantlet regeneration are recalcitrant and limited to a few genotypes in response to different treatments in vitro. Reported in this paper is a procedure in which several explants of three high yielding and drought tolerant sweet potato cultivars (SK010, WHCH005 and PRAP496), mostly grown and cultivated in the highlands of Papua New Guinea (PNG) were used to induce embryogenic callus and regenerate plantlets. To achieve a reliable and an efficient system for inducing embryogenic callus on stem, petiole and leaf disc explants, a modified form of Murashige and Skoog (MS) and Linsmaier and Skoog (LS) media, supplemented with 1 gL-1 picloram and 8 gL-1 agar was used. This procedure resulted in large amount of embryogenic calli that were potentially capable of regenerating whole plantlets on all the different types of explants tested. Further attempts made in plantlet regeneration failed, however ways in which improvement of the tested regeneration media can be made for plant regeneration in similar studies were discussed
Effect of Soil Moisture, Tillage Speed, Depth, Ballast Weight and, Used Implement on Wheel Slippage of the Tractor: A Review
Tractor wheel slippage is a critical parameter for fuel consumption and field performance and should not exceed 15%. Several attempts have been made to study the wheel slippage of the agricultural tractor in order to minimize it to acceptable levels during the tillage operations. There are many different types of implements for soil tillage, each one of them affects the wheel slippage in a different way. Moreover, several studies have found many operating conditions that can affect the wheel slippage significantly such as: soil moisture content, tillage speed, ballast weights and the type of implement used for tillage. This article reviews the relationship between them which gives possibility for further research to focus on the potential solutions to decrease the tractor driving wheel slippage which can positively affect the fuel consumption. Increase the additional mass of the tractor, decrease the air pressure in the tires, avoid tilling the soil that is too wet or too dry and, choose the right implement, speed and depth can decrease the tractor driving wheel slippage
Influence of Technique Cultivation on Some Properties of Two Varieties of Yam (Dioscorea spp) Flour
All most of roots, tubers and seeds studied have been carried out under environmental control or glass. These methods had an advantage to minimize environmental effects on crop due to unequal distribution of the nutriment in the soil. This, have been often observed through the variability of size and form of the tubers harvested generally in farm condition. In order to evaluate the variations occurred on the nutritional (Ash, while protein and fat) and functional (clarity and swelling-solubility) values, yams cultivated in nursery gardener sachet have being compared to those of famer condition. This study has been conducted 2013-2014. Yam grown in nursery gardener sachet has the highest (p < 0.05) ash content (4.58 ± 2.18%) than this of field (1.53 ± 0.35%). Flour clarity is also affected by technical cultivation. This property is more improved by the cultivation in nursery gardener (p < 0.05). The cultivation in nursery gardener improved ash content and clarity of the suspension of yam flour
Evaluation of Infiltration Characteristics of Soils Developed on Coastal Plain Sands in Calabar Municipality Local Government Area, Cross River State, Nigeria
Infiltration of water into the soil is an important physical process affecting the fate of water under field conditions, especially the amount of subsurface recharge and surface runoff and hence the hazard of soil erosion. The study was conducted to evaluate the infiltration models of soils developed on coastal plain sands and to select a suitable models as a basis to improve the management of the soil. A total of 16 infiltration runs were made with the double ring infiltrometer. For the purpose of getting best fitting model, the results obtained from various infiltration models were compared with observed field data. The parameters considered for best fitting of model were correlation coefficient and coefficient of variability (CV). Model-predicted cumulative infiltration consistently deviated from field-measured data, that is, the models under-predicted cumulative infiltration by several orders of magnitude for Kostiakov, Green Ampt and Philip model but the model over predicted cumulative infiltration for Horton model. The results of the soil samples analysed revealed that the mean values of 707.50, 208.13 and 84.38 gkg-1 for sand, silt and clay with the textural class of sandy loam. The bulk density, particle density and total porosity had mean values of 1.84 gcm-3, 2.44 gcm-3 and 22.56%. However, there was a fairly good agreement between mean-measured cumulative infiltration (7.30 cm/hr, CV = 32.19%); Philips (1.93 cm/hr, CV = 42.49%); Kostiakov (0.13 cm/hr, CV = 30.77%); Horton (64.49 cm/hr, CV = 22.39%) and Green Ampt model (42.04 cm/hr, CV = 0.57%) respectively. The data however showed that the correlation coefficient for Kostiakov (1.00) was best fitting in predicting the field measured data and this was closely followed by Green Ampt (0.88); while Philip’s model and Horton model showed a negative correlation (r = -0.88 and r = -0.82) with the field measured data. Conservation measures involving mulching, cover cropping and afforestation are recommended to improve the soil structure and infiltration capacity
Effect of Seed Priming Methods on Germination of Sweet Dattock (Detarium microcarpum) and Indian Jujube (Ziziphus mauritiana) in Sudan Savanna Ecological Zone of Nigeria
This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of different methods of seed pre-treatment on germination of two indigenous tree species, Sweet dattock and Indian jujube (Detarium microcarpum and Ziziphus mauritiana). The experiment is carried out at the Tree Seedlings Nursery of Faculty of Agriculture, Kebbi State University of Science and Technology, Aleiro. Treatments consisted of Boiled water (100ºC) for 10 minutes, 20 minutes and 30 minutes; three levels of diluted sulphuric acid (H2S04) soaking time for 10minutes, 20 minutes and 30 minutes; Seed scarification and control. The treatments were arranged in Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with three replications per treatment. Results revealed that the seed of Sweet dattock (Detarium microcarpum) soaked in hot water at 1000 C for 30 minutes exhibited the best germination percentage (100.00±0.00) within four (96 hours) days. This is followed by hot water treatment for 10 minutes and sulphuric acid treatment for 20 minutes which gave the same germination percentage of 93.33±11.54 within 4 (96 hours) days. The seeds under control treatment gave the least germination percentage of 86.67±11.54 and took a longer period to germinate (eleven days.) Indian jujube (Ziziphus maurtiana) seeds on the other hand, gave the highest germination percentage (93.33±5.77) with scarification, followed by soaking in hot water for 30minutes (46.57±11.54), while the lowest germination percentage was recorded for seeds in the untreated control (3.33±5.77). Based on the result, pre-treatment of Sweet dattock (Detarium microcarpum) seed with hot water at 1000 C for 30 minutes and scarification of Indian jujube (Ziziphus maurtiana) seed is recommended for effective germination
The Effects of Vermicompost and Phosphorus on the Development of Soybean Plant
Aims: Vermicompost (worm manure), which has gained importance in the last quarter of the century among innovative agricultural practices, has positive effects on both plant development and soil structure. The shortage of organic matter in soil reduces the productivity of agricultural production and hampers its continuity. Vermicompost products confer plant nutrient elements, various hormones, enzymes, humic substances and especially organic matter to the soil. This study aimed to study the effects of vermicompost application and phosphorus fertilizer rates on soybean in limy soil conditions.
Study Design: The affect of vermicompost applications was evaluated with four doses of vermicompost (Control, 1.5, 3, and % 6) in three doses of phosporus applications. So, 0, 50 ppm and 100 ppm phosporus blocks had all four doses of vermicompost. Optimum level (100 ppm N and 100 ppm K) of N and K fertilisers were applied to all plants tested. Total plant biomass, leaf wet and dry weights, bean wights, plant height and nitrogen compositions of leaf and bean were measured.
Results: The results were detected significant at % 1 on all parameters. As control plants’ leaf + scape wet and dry weights were measured 3.29 and 1.23 g respectively, they were measured 8.6 and 5.22 g at plants used vermicompost and phosphorus together. With vermicompost and phosphorus aplications, the phosphorus and nitrogen uptakes increased too. While control plants’ leaves have % 0.38 phosphorus content, it was measured % 0.84 at plant aplicated vermicompost and phosphorus.
Coclusion: As a result, we observed increased P uptake levels with increased doses of vermicompost application in limysoils
A Classification Study of Rain Fall Oscillation in Tamil Nadu with Effect on Agricultural Product Import
Trends in Indian rainfall records have been extensively studied but the subject remains complicated by the high spatiotemporal variability of rainfall arising from complex atmospheric dynamics. The aim of this work is to study the variation in rainfall pattern and classification of Agricultural products imports in Tamil Nadu. The dataset relates to monthly rainfall from various districts of Tamil Nadu for the period of January to December, from the Indian Meteorological Department we collected. The time frame of the data used in this study is 2007-2013. In this research article, we applied, K-means clustering technique and correspondence method. The cluster group are compared with agricultural product import during the year 2007 – 2013
Efficacy of Different Organic Manures on Growth and Yield Performance of Organically Grown Tomato
The field experiment was conducted at the Horticultural farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka -1207 during the period from October 2014 to March 2015 to find out the efficacy of different organic manures and different varieties on the growth, yield performance of organically grown tomato. The experiment comprised of two different factors: Factor A. four types of organic manure [M0= Control (No organic manures application), M1 = Cow dung (30 t.ha-1), M2 = Poultry manure (25 t.ha-1) and M3 = Vermicompost (20 t.ha-1)] Factor B. three types of variety V1 = BARI tomato 15, V2 = BARI tomato 14 and V3 = BARI tomato 2. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Encouraging responses were monitored in all respects. Among the treatment combination M2V1 (Poultry manure + BARI Tomato 15) showed the highest plant height, maximum number of flower cluster, number of flower per cluster, number of fruits per cluster and number of fruit per plant with improved fruit size. The maximum yield (86.25 t/ha) was recorded from the treatment combination of M2V1 (Poultry manure + BARI Tomato 15), while the treatment combination of M0V3 (Control treatment + BARI Tomato 2) gave the minimum yield (31.25 t/ha). Therefore, BARI Tomato 15 coupled with poultry manure can be the most suitable for enhanced yield and can be considered a noble practice in sustainable agriculture
Performance of Growing African Giant Snails (Archachatina marginata) Fed Forage Mixtures and Maize-based Concentrate Supplemented with Monkey Cola (Cola rostrata) Seed Meal
Aim: An experiment was conducted to assess the performance of growing snails fed maize-based concentrate and maize supplemented with Cola rostrata seed meal in addition to forage mixtures.
Methodology: A total of eighty eight (88) growing snails with weight ranging from 94.45g - 94.73g were randomly allotted to four treatment groups (T1, T2, T3 and T4), replicated two times with eleven (11) snails per replicate in a completely randomized design (CRD).The snails on T1 were fed maize-based concentrate only, T2 were fed with maize concentrate supplemented with 40% cola rostrata seed meal, T3 were fed with forage mixture and maize-based concentrate while, T4 consisted of snails fed forage mixtures and maize concentrate supplemented with 40% Cola rostrata seed meal. The feeding trial lasted for fifty six (56) days.
Results: The results showed that the mean final body weight and total weight gain were higher for T4. More so, feed conversion ratio (FCR) of T4 was equally as good as that of the control (T1).
Conclusion: Diets comprising, maize-based concentrate with 40% Cola rostrata seed meal supplementation and leguminous forage mixtures gave better growth performance when compared with other treatment diets and therefore for optimum growth performance of Archachatina marginata it was recommended
Effects of Different Types of Organic Fertilizers on Growth Performance of Amaranthus caudatus (Samaru Local Variety) and Amaranthus cruentus (NH84/452)
Aims: To evaluate the effect of different types of organic fertilizers on growth performance of Amaranthus caudatus (Samaru local variety) and Amaranthus cruentus (NH84/452).
Study Design: A randomized complete block design (RCBD) was used for the experiment.
Place and Duration of Study: The field experiment was carried out in the nursery of a homestead garden at No 20, Isaiah Balat Street, Sabo GRA, Kaduna State, Nigeria.
Methodology: The study consists of seven treatments which includes control (no fertilizer), 5 t ha-1 and 10 t ha-1 poultry manure, 5 t ha-1 and 10 t ha-1 sewage sludge, 35 kg ha-1 and 70 kg ha-1 NPK compound fertilizer and also with Amaranthus caudatus (Samaru local variety) and Amaranthus cruentus (NH84/452) in factorial arrangement fitted into a randomized complete block design (RCBD) and replicated three times. Growth performance data were collected on plant height, number of leaves, leaf area and leaf area index from 2 weeks after transplanting (WAT) to 6 weeks after transplanting (WAT).
Results: The plant height and number of leaves of the two varieties were found in the range of 18.30 - 135.67cm and 13.33 - 78.33cm respectively. Leaf area and leaf area index of the two varieties had values in the range of 41.71 - 258.29cm2 and 1.76 - 41.72 respectively. At 6 WAT, 10 t ha-1 poultry manure recorded the highest value for all the growth parameters for both varieties except for leaf length, leaf width and leaf area of Amaranthus caudatus (Samaru local variety), where 10 t ha-1 sewage sludge and 70 kg ha-1 NPK compound fertilizer were highest.
Conclusion: The experimental results of this study have shown that poultry manure had higher growth performance on the two varieties of Amaranth when compared with sewage sludge and NPK compound fertilizer. The application of poultry manures at 10 t ha-1 is therefore recommended for farmers to use to obtain higher yields of Amaranth
