    Strengthening the Monitoring and Surveillance System for Bovine Tuberculosis in Post Mortem Material from Slaughtered Cattle in Eswatini: A Review

    The main objective of this review study was to examine the validity of test results generated by using the Ziehl-Neelsen smear microscopy as the sole diagnostic tool for the monitoring and surveillance of bovine tuberculosis in cattle slaughtered in Eswatini. Methods: A retrospective analysis of available laboratory data of beef carcass condemnations for a study period from 2014 to 2018 was carried out. Literature was reviewed to find out potential sample preparation and concentration methods to improve the sensitivity of current Z-N smear microscopy. Results: The limited literature reviewed in this study has briefly highlighted (i) the limitations of using the Z-N direct smear microscopy as a screening and confirmatory laboratory test for bovine tuberculosis suspected carcasses, (ii) that the Z-N smear microscopy method may be inadequate for identifying and differentiating other acid fast bacilli co-existing in a M. bovis infection, (iii) that concentration of lymph node aspirate samples may improve the sensitivity of acid fast bacilli smear microscopy, (iv) that strategic deployment of ancillary laboratory tests, such as the Rapid diagnostic tests (RDT) and the Polymerase chain reaction test (PCR) alongside the Z-N smear microscopy may achieve an adequate level of diagnostic test performance. Conclusion: In order to strengthen the surveillance and monitoring of bovine tuberculosis in the country, it is necessary to consider techniques for the concentration of bovine tuberculosis suspect lymph node samples, to use Rapid diagnostic test Kits in parallel to the Z-N direct smear microscopy

    Use of Vermicompost in the Control of Rhizoctonia sp: Impact on Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L) Production

    The area planted for vegetable production is increasing in Côte d'Ivoire while crop yields are decreasing due to low soil fertility, poor application of mineral fertilizers and poor plant development due to pest pressure. The trial carried out at the experimental site of the University Jean Lorougnon Guédé of Daloa, Central-Western Côte d'Ivoire, aims at evaluating the potential of vermicompost to reduce the attacks of the Rhizoctonia sp fungus on the tomato crop and increase its production. The trial was carried out using the Fischer randomized block design where four treatments were repeated four times. Four substrates, composed of mixtures of soils and doses of vermicompost (0, 20, 40 and 60 t/ha), inoculated with the fungus, were used for the cultivation of tomato in pots. Agronomic and phytosanitary parameters were evaluated on tomato plants at the end of the trial. The results showed that the production increased with the addition of vermicompost and this, the higher the dose of vermicompost added. The health of tomato plants was also improved by the reduction of Rhizoctonia sp attacks, especially with the 60t/ha dose, for which the disease severity and incidence indices were the lowest, 15% and 14%, respectively, against 41% and 38% obtained with the control. Vermicompost could be used to control fungal diseases of tomato and improve its production

    Effect of Chicken Manure and Mulch Types to Growth and Yield of Shallot (Allium ascalonicum L.) in Lowland

    Aims: The research aimed to study the interaction between chicken manure dose and mulch type to growth and yield of shallot in lowland. Study Design:  Factorial design in Randomized complete block design. Place and Duration of Study: The research was conducted in experimental garden of Faculty of Agriculture, Andalas University, West Sumatera, Indonesia from September-December 2019. Methodology: Factorial design with 3 factors in block randomized design was used in the research. The first factor chicken manure dose that consisted of three degrees (30 ton/ha, 40 ton/ha and 50 ton/ha). The second factor was type of mulch that consisted of two degrees (black plastic mulch and silver plastic mulch). The observed parameters were height of plant, number of leaves, number of bulb per clump and dry weight per hectare. The data was analyzed by using F test in 5% and followed by Duncan’s New Multiple Range Test in 5%. Results: The result showed that the interaction between chicken manure and mulch type did not affect the growth and yield of shallot. Conclusion: Chicken manure and mulch type were not effective to use for increasing the growth and yield of shallot in same time

    Field Performance of Three-way Cross Yellow and White Maize Hybrids in Nepal

    Maize hybrids can increase production, bridge the yield gap, and boost up domestic production in Nepal. Three-way cross hybrid introduces an alternative to produce low cost hybrid seed for resource poor farmers. A study was performed to identify promising yellow and white maize hybrids developed by International Centre for Maize and Wheat Improvement (CIMMYT), Mexico in Rampur, Nepal. Nineteen three-way cross white maize hybrids with two checks and seventeen yellow maize hybrids with one check were tested in field experiments on 2017 and 2018. Treatments were replicated twice in α-lattice design with each experimental plot of 9.6-m2 (4-m × 2.4-m). AF17A-426-13/14, AF17A-426-1/2, AF17A-426-28/39, and AF17A-426-15/16 were the three-way cross white hybrids produced grain yield of more than 9000 kg ha-1. Similarly, AF17A-473-20/29 and AF17A-473-18/27 yielded about 9000 kg ha-1 among the three-way cross yellow maize hybrids. These hybrids have commercial potentials to increase maize yield in Nepal if the provided parents are successful in the seed production

    Multi-layer Budding of Oversized Rubber (Hevea brasiliences) Seedlings: Success and Growth in Different Soil Media

    The study on Multi-layer budding of oversized rubber seedling aimed at evaluating the success of multiple budding operation on single seedling of rubber tree species comprising of 4 to 7 budding layers per seedling. The experiment used randomized complete blocked design layout with 3 treatments such as 4, 5 and 7 layer budding in a single seedling replicated 4 times. Results revealed that the highest number of budding layers succeeded significantly higher as compared to 4 and 5 layers. The main survival percentage is about 79.17% for the 7 layers, 76.52% for the 5 layers and only about 55.36% for the 4 layers. Pure garden soil reported to have significant results on sprouting rate, sprout length, stalk diameter and number of leaves. This finding emphasized that budding of rejected oversized rubber seedlings grown in an abandoned nurseries can be reutilized for mass production of budded cuttings through multiple budding of 7 layers per seedlings to maximize planting materials derived from single seedlings

    Analysis of the Determinants of Access to Agricultural Credit at Local Bank of Mutual Agricultural Credit

    The objective of this paper is to determine the factors that favour the granting of credit in the microfinance institution at the Local Bank of Mutual Agricultural Credit (LBMAC) the largest in BENIN in a rural area. In methodological terms, the estimation of a logistic regression model has been made. Several variables are collected to explain access to agricultural credit in the institution. The results of the estimates show that, having one person as a guarantor and the seniority in obtaining the loan influence the granting of credit. As a result, the LBMAC is very selective, greatly limiting the demand for credit from farmers. So, economic policies must offer favourable conditions for micro-finance in the agricultural sector to increase their numbers and also allow them to be less selective

    In vitro Plant Regeneration in Banana (Musa sp.) cv. Grand Nain

    This study was conducted at the tissue culture laboratory in Pakistan. Suckers obtained from the banana cv. Grand Nain to explore the effects of different concentrations of BAP and IAA. After inoculation with Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with different concentrations of 6-Benzylaminopurine (BAP) and the Indole-3- acetic acid (IAA) the suckers first turn into the brown after 5-10 days then turned into a green mass-like structure after 30 days. From this mass-like structure shoots and roots were developed. Among the different concentrations, BAP 7.5 mg/l and IAA 0.5 mg/l showed the highest number of shoots 0.75, 2.75 and 6.25 per explant and shows the highest shoot lengths which 1.03 cm, 2.45 cm and 3.40 cm respectively. IAA is essential for only roots proliferation. The roots of different lengths were produced when the concentration of IAA 0.5 mg/l was used and 2.93 cm, 4.63 cm and 5.88 cm roots length produced at 15, 30 and 45 days after occultation respectively. Then these plants were transferred to the greenhouse for hardening acclimatization with the environment, the hardening process took place, and the established plantlets are ready for planting

    Genetic Diversity, Correlations and Path Coefficient Analysis among the F5 Populations of Brassica Species

    The present study was carried out to estimate heritability, genetic variability, correlation and genetic advance among F5 populations of ten genotypes in Brassica species. This study was executed following randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications during November 2017 to February 2018 at the experimental field of College of Agricultural Sciences, International University of Business Agriculture and Technology, Dhaka, Bangladesh. Aim of the research was to evaluate and select the best segregating genotypes for the yield and yield contributing traits towards variety development programs. Analysis of variance revealed that the genotypes were significantly different for all the characters studied. The relative phenotypic coefficient of variation (PCV) was higher than the genotypic coefficient of variation (GCV) for all the traits studied. The high GCV value was observed for the days to 50% flowering (FF), plant height (PH), primary branches per plant (PBP), pod per plant (PP) and seed yield per plant (SYP) that indicated a high broad-sense heritability. A significant positive correlation with seed yield per plant was found in days to 50% flowering (0.578**), the plant height, (0.787**), pod length (PL) (0.406*), seeds per plant (SP) (0.369*), pod per plant (0.697**) and hundred seeds weight (HSW) (0.500**), but significantly negative correlation found in primary branches per plant (-0.046*). The results of path coefficient analysis revealed that days to 50% flowering (0.287), plant height (0.407), pod length  (0.919), seeds per plant (0.033), pod per plant (0.035) and hundred seeds weight (0.795) had a positive direct impact on seed yield per plant and thus it was indicated that these traits could be exploited for the enhancement of yield performance of Brassica species. This study showed that based on the agronomic performance execution, genotypes G2, G5, G6 and G8 might be proposed for future hybridization programs in Bangladesh followed by variety development activities

    Evaluation of Synthetic Insecticides for the Management of Helicoverpa Armigera Mill in Tomato Production

    This study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of synthetic insecticides in managing Helicoverpa armigera Mill in tomato production. The experiment was conducted during the major and minor tomato growing seasons at the Sekyere Kumawu and Asante Akim North districts in Ghana. The experimental design was a 3 x 5 factorial randomized complete block with four replications. Four insect pest control regimes were evaluated for their effectiveness in controlling the tomato fruit borer. Three tomato varieties were used in this experiment. The results showed that, significantly, higher marketable fruit yields were obtained on the sprayed plots than the control plots. In general, the variety “pectomec” suffered the highest yield loss on the water sprayed field, followed by UC 82 and lastly, power rhino, although all the varieties suffered losses greater than 50%. This shows that none of the varieties used for this study is completely resistant to Helicoverpa armigera. Yields were generally higher in the major season (March-July) than in the minor season (September-December) for pectomec and power rhino. The best insecticides are Oxymatrin (2.4%), Lambda-cyhalothrin (2.5%) and Dimethoate (400g/l) +Cypermethrin (36g/l) in descending order. Contrarily, UC 82 had low yields in the major season than in the minor season. The study recommends that Helicoverpa armigera Mill should be controlled with pesticides to improve yields of tomato

    Financial Analysis of Country Bean in Narsingdi District of Bangladesh

    Aims: This study is an attempt to examine the profitability, problems and probable solutions of country bean production in Belabo upazila of Narsingdi district of Bangladesh. Study Design: Financial calculation of the cost and return were done to the evaluation process. Besides the problems and solutions of bean cultivation were also analyzed. Place and Duration of Study: This study was conducted in Belabo upazila of Narsingdi district of Bangladesh from November 2019 to April 2020. Methodology: A convenience sampling technique was selected to meet the objectives. One hundred and twenty five country bean growers were chosen from the study area. An interview schedule was prepared for collecting necessary data from the participants. The schedule contained questions about the socioeconomic characteristics of farmers, different costs associated with production, different problems faced by them during production and their probable suggestions to overcome those problems. Standard financial techniques were used to evaluate costs and returns. Descriptive statistics were used to describe socio-demographic characteristics, farming information, problems during the production process and rank of suggestions. Results: The study found that the total cost of bean cultivation was found in Bangladeshi Taka (BDT) 163866.35 per ha, net return was BDT 60850.28 per ha and benefit cost ratio was 1.37. The study found low price, lack of scientific knowledge in farming, transportation problems and poor storage facilities as major constraints. Besides, the farmers mentioned that they need proper training, reduction in price risk, credit support, cold storage facilities and transportation facilities. Conclusion: The study showed that per hectare yield, gross returns, gross margin, net return and benefit cost ratio of bean were higher. Therefore, bean production is highly profitable and it would help to improve the socio-economic condition of farmers in Narsingdi district. Besides, the study identified several problems faced by the bean growers and possible solutions to overcome those constraints were proposed
