    Effects of Price Insurance Programs on Supply Response: A Case Study of Corn Farmers in Quebec

    Aims: This study examines the supply response of corn in the province of Quebec. Study Design:  A time series design is implemented. Place and Duration of Study: Our analysis covers the period from 1985 to 2013 and uses the data of corn production in the province of Quebec. Methodology: A generalised autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (GARCH) process is used to model output price expectations and its volatility. Results: We found that application of the Farm Income Stabilisation Insurance in Quebec neutralises the adverse effects of price volatilities on corn production and generates a market power for corn producers. The change in the producers\u27 attitude towards risk is other implication of the insurance program. Conclusion: These results imply that implementation of the insurance program in the province of Quebec leads to an increase of corn production and consequently this increase in production can impose more compensation cost (paid by the insurance program) to governments

    Evaluation of the Potency of Aqueous 1-Methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) Application in Carrots

    The study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of aqueous 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) on postharvest quality of carrots and to compare with/to gaseous 1-MCP and modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) treatments. Carrots initially washed with tap water were distributed into 4 batches the first of which was subject to aqueous 1-MCP application, the second to the gaseous 1-MCP application, the third to MAP and the fourth left non-treated as a control. Carrots were placed in clamshell polyethene terephthalate (PET) boxes except MAP-treated ones and stored 23 ± 1°C for 10 days. During the 10-day period, carrots were evaluated by tracking weight loss, firmness, color, headspace gas composition, total soluble solids, pH, titratable acidity, carotenoid content and decays. The results showed that gaseous 1-MCP application may have the potential for delaying postharvest quality losses by restricting decay ratios for carrots held at room temperature. Aqueous 1-MCP and MAP applications were however found to be inefficient suppressing or delaying postharvest quality losses

    Sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L. Lam.) presents a great nutritional and economic importance in the tropical regions. It is a source of income for producers and an important food especially in period of welding. In spite of these importances, sweet potato belongs of the underused and neglected species as regards research in Benin. Sampling was carried out at Dangbo, Adjohoun and Bonou in department of Ouémé (south Benin), from August 2016 to May 2017. This study evaluated varietal diversity based on vernacular nominations and production constraints of sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L. Lam.) in South Benin. Producers are identified using the snowball sampling method. In the first instance, a random draw was carried out among the producers targeted by the head of each of the six villages. Then, each of the selected producers is asked to identify other sweet potato producers. Statistical methods used to measure the varietal diversity include Shannon diversity indice, varietal richness and equitability (abundance). 23 local cultivars were listed including ten (10) regularly cultivated subject to synonymies. Adjohoun has cumulated average richness, index of Shannon and number equivalent most elevated (RC = 38; H = 2.49; Eq.E = 12.10). However, the most elevated equitability and more nearer to 1 (E= 0.71) is obtained at Dangbo. The main constraints enumerated by the producers are absence of flow market, attacks of the devastating and illnesses and the non availability of the quality seeds. For people in the study area, there are several sweet potato cultivars, but are subject to several constraints, in particular those related to pests and diseases, which have a serious impact on the productivity of cultivars, even those be more productive

    Correlation Studies for Bulb Yield and Yield Contributing Traits among Onion (Allium cepa L.) Genotypes

    Thirty-seven Onion (Allium cepa L.) genotypes comprising of twelve parents (12) and twenty-five hybrids were evaluated at the Fadama Teaching and Research farm of the Department of Crop Science, Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto during the 2015/2016 dry season. The objective of the study is to determine the correlation of characters among the 37 genotypes. The treatments were laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. After harvesting, the genotypes were stored for five months using farmers practice. The analysis of the results indicated highly significant (P<0.001) positive correlation between plant height and leaf area (1), plant height and leaf area index (0.84676), plant height and number of leaves (0.46727) plant height and percentage loss (0.43356) leaf area and leaf area index (0.85459), leaf area and cured bulb weight (0.47029), leaf area and percentage loss (0.50254) number of leaves and cured bulb weight (0.51363), number of leaves and percentage loss (0.43259), bulb diameter and bulb length (0.36367), bulb diameter and percentage loss (0.68209). Results obtained indicated highly significant (<0.001) negative correlation between leaf area index and days to maturity (-0.29333), leaf area index and number of leaves (- 0.29333), number of leaves and bulb diameter (- 0.02255), and between days to maturity and percentage loss (- 0.86679). Results obtained also revealed significant (<0.05) negative correlation between number of leaves and percentage bolting (- 0.26466) number of leaves and average bulb weight (- 0.26466) number of leaves and days to maturity (- 0.24959) days to maturity and average bulb weight (0.02255) cured bulb weight and days to maturity (-0.24001). The results of the study, therefore, conclude that Onion genotypes with longer maturity are best for storage

    The Response of Wheat (Triticum aestivum) and Tef [(Eragrostis tef (Zucc.) to All-purpose Yates Thrive Fertiliser on Vertisols of Northern Ethiopia

    A greenhouse pot experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of all-purpose yates thrive, which is a new water-soluble compound fertiliser that was brought from Australia on the yield and yield components of wheat and tef on Vertisols brought from Hintalo Wajirat district. The experiment consisted of six treatments (control, recommended NP, recommended yates thrive, half recommended yates thrive, twice recommended yates thrive and recommended yates thrive plus adjusted NP) in three replications. The results of the experiments depicted that, spike/panicle length, straw and grain yields of wheat and tef were improved. Inline to this, the highest yield and yield component of both crops were obtained at the recommended rates of its thrive plus adjusted NP except the straw yield of tef. But statistically the plant height and panicle length were not significant.  Thus,  yates thrive can be used for cereals an alternative fertiliser by adjusting the level of  N and P with cost-benefit analysis of the technology as compared to the existing fertiliser types

    Sericulture as a Tool for Sustainable National Development in Nigeria- The Way Forward

    The present review article proposed sericulture as a viable, sustainable development plan for Nigeria and as a path to diversifying the Nigerian economy away from an oil-based economy to that which is more balanced and stable. The paper identified poverty alleviation as the foremost Sustainable Development Goal for Nigeria. The reasons for Nigeria’s failure at getting rid of abject poverty in spite of decades of oil wealth were advanced. Sericulture, the agro-based business of silk production and processing was presented as a model that fits into the UNDP-identified components of a robust agribusiness plan for Nigeria. The paper concluded that a renaissance of silk production in Nigeria is possible and that while the focus on Bombyx mori sericulture should be given priority, research into the development of African wild silk moths of the indigenous (Nigerian) Anaphe sp. should be encouraged. It was recommended that collaborative efforts between government, the private sector and the academia should be actively pursued in order to develop Nigerian Sericulture. Furthermore, policies focused on the local utilization of silk and integration of this into the development of the entire textile industry was recommended

    Effect of Different Weeding Methods on Correlation Studies and Phytotoxicity Symptoms on Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.)

    A field experiment was conducted during kharif 2016 at College of Agriculture, Hassan, University of Agricultural Sciences, Bengaluru to evaluate different pre and post emergent herbicides on growth and yield of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) the soil of experimental site is red sandy loam in texture, neutral in reaction and medium in available nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. The experiment was laid out in a RCBD with seven treatments replicated thrice. The higher yield was obtained in weed free check, while among the herbicide treatments fenoxaprop–p-ethyl 54 g a.i. ha-1 as early post emergent recorded between components such as number of tubers per plant (r= 0.977*), and tuber weight per plant (r= 0.977*) with tuber yield. The correlation between growth and yield attributes of potato was positively correlated while significant negative correlation between yield and weed density and dry weight

    Assessment of Rooting Capability and Rootstock Potentials of Some Turkish Bottle Gourd (Lagenaria siceraria) Accessions Used as Rootstocks for Watermelon [Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.) Matsum. & Nakai]

    Grafting practice has been common agricultural application in fruit-bearing vegetables in several countries. Since scion can be grafted on rootstock seedling with or without root in Cucurbitaceous crops, rooting capabilities of rootstocks during healing processes has critical importance. Rooting characteristics of some commercial hybrid rootstocks and eight Turkish bottle gourd accessions (Lagenaria siceraria) was studied when they were used as rootstocks for watermelon in splice grafting method. The study was carried out at three steps. At the first step, gourd seedling cuttings were prepared by cutting one cotyledon and growing point and roots then they were transplanted into irrigated  rooting media consist of peat and perlite (2:1 v:v) under high air humidity and low light intensity conditions in a plastic tunnel covered with shading material (post graft care unit). Root formation capability of the cuttings was evaluated three weeks after transplanting. Crimson Tide watermelon cv. was grafted onto gourd genotypes without root by splice grafting method, and they were transplanted in growth media (2:1 v:v) in post graft care unit at the second stage of the experiment. At the third stage, rootstock effect of the bottle gourd accessions on plant growth parameters was investigated. Rooting performance (1-5 scale), root characteristics (length, thickness, fresh and dry weight) and graft compatibility rate (%) were determined three weeks                  after grafting. Rootstocks effect of different local bottle gourd accessions on leaf number and                area, plant length, and fresh and dry weight of shoots and roots were investigated at the last                 stage of the study. While bottle gourd accessions showed significant variation in rooting                 capabilities after grafting, root characteristics, graft compatibility and plant growth (leaf number, leaf area and biomass accumulation), it was found out that local calabash accessions presented similar rootstock performance with commercial hybrid rootstocks. The survival rate of grafted plants ranged from 84% to 100%. All grafted combinations produced significantly higher biomass than ungrafted control plants. A number of local bottle gourd accessions produced higher leaf number, leaf                     area, dry root weight and shoot dry weight than commercial rootstocks were three, five, six and                six, respectively.&nbsp

    Growth and Yield Responses of Cabbage Cultivars as Influenced by Organic and Inorganic Fertilizers

    An experiment was conducted at the Horticulture Farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka from November 2015 to February 2016 to evaluate the growth and yield responses of cabbage cultivars as influenced by organic and inorganic fertilizers. The experiment comprised of two different factors such as (1) three varieties viz. V1­ (Atlas 70), V2 (Keifu 65) and V3 (Autumn 60) and (2) Four different fertilizers viz. F0 (Control), F1 (Cow dung), F2 (Poultry manure), and F3 (Inorganic fertilizer). The experiment was set up in Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. The experimental plot was fertilized as per treatment with organic and inorganic fertilizers. Among the varieties, Atlas 70 (V1) achieved the highest results of Plant height (31.94 cm), Leaf length with petiole (32.00 cm), Stem length (4.194 cm), Diameter of head (20.24 cm), Weight of whole plant (2.23 kg/plant), gross yield (46.67 t/ha), marketable yield (45.29 t/ha) and Economic production (1.576 kg/plant) at the time of harvest . With the interaction effect of variety and fertilizer; V1F2 (Atlas 70 × Poultry manure) represented the highest Weight of whole plant (2.56 kg/plant), gross yield (62.14 t/ha), marketable yield (61.52 t/ha) and Economic production (1.85 kg/plant).Therefore, Atlas 70 coupled with poultry manure can be the most suitable for enhanced yield and economic production of cabbage

    Morphological Characteristics of Amaranthus cruentus and Amaranthus tricolor as Influenced by Integration of Organic and Inorganic Fertilizers in Kiambu County, Kenya

    A field experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of organic and inorganic fertilisers application on growth parameters of two amaranth varieties. Fifty-four treatments were evaluated as factorial combinations of organic manure applied at 16.9 t/ha, inorganic NPK fertiliser at 500 kg/ha, zero fertiliser (control treatment) and two amaranth varieties (A. tricolor and A. cruentus varieties). The treatments were fitted into in a randomised complete block design (RCBD) replicated three times. A. cruentus recorded the highest leaf area of 1415 cm2 in the second from 248 cm2 in season one. A. tricolor in the second season recorded 700 cm2 from 387 cm2 at the same treatment of 16.9 t/h+ 500 kg/ha. The number of leaves was highly significant at p≤0.01 in the second season but was significant at p≤0.05 in the first season while sole organic manure was applied at 16.9t/ha, A. tricolor variety had 17.56 number of leaves in season two from 14.56 in season one at 16.9 t/h, in A. tricolor the number of  leaves  in reduced from 17.06 to 14.06 in season one when 500 kg/ha of NPK 17-17-17- was applied. The longest shoot of 43 cm in the second season from 22 cm in the first season was in A. tricolor at the rate of 16.9 t/ha + 500 kg/ha in season two. In A. cruentus the shoot length increased to 34.7 cm from 31.1 cm in season one when sole organic manure was applied at 16.9 t/ha. The root length was highly significant at p≤0.01 in the first season but was significant at p≤0.05 in the second season A. tricolor had 16.58cm and A. cruentus having 17.39 cm in season one at control, in season two at control, the root length was 18.73 cm in A. cruentus and 18.94 cm in A. tricolor. Root length reduced from 18.23 cm in season one to 12.86 in season two in A. cruentus  when 16.9 t/ha of organic quail manure was applied. The root dry weight in A. tricolor recorded 2.392 g from 1.177 g at 8.45 t/h+500 kg/ha, at 16.9 t/h+500 kg/ha in season one, A. cruentus had 0.625 g which increased to 2.468 g but A. tricolor increased to 2.328 g from 0.72 g
