    This module provides background information on microwave remote sensing with polar-orbiting satellites. It reviews coverage, orbits, and data latency issues of current operational and selected research satellites and notes improvements expected in the NPP and NPOESS era. The module contrasts active vs. passive remote sensing, discusses advantages and limitations of different microwave instrument scanning strategies, and addresses viewing geometry with implications for spatial resolution and swath coverage. Finally, it offers a review of the microwave spectrum and special characteristics of microwave energy important for understanding microwave imagery and derived products.     In this three-part lesson, students explore the Live Access Server (LAS) and produce plots of sea surface temperature. They then prepare a time series of data for particular location(s) on the Gulf Stream and use Excel to produce and analyze graphs of sea surface temperature. One of the most studied and important ocean currents of the world lies along the eastern coast of the United States and is called the Gulf Stream. It derives its name from its source region of warm water in the Gulf of Mexico. For the past two decades, scientists have been collecting sea surface temperature (SST) data from satellites, buoys and ships in the Gulf Stream and Atlantic Basin.     This interactive website helps students build on prior knowledge. It takes students through an incredible journey and demonstrates to them the importance of soil. I liked this site because it was easy to use and understand. Students can play with the interactive activities or adopt a soil critter. The website is appealing and offers assessments, materials and references that are always useful for teachers to have use of. I also like that this site is like a fun adventure that the soil wizard takes the students on, which is a great attention grabber for this grade level.
