Impacts of Climate Change Animation
This site presents one of three animated films for schoolchildren, commissioned by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority. An emotive and visual animation conveys the effects climate change will have on marine ecosystems and suggests ways to minimize our impact. Educational levels: Middle school
Hurricane Katrina ESSEA module
This problem-based learning activity uses Hurricane Katrina as the context for students to conduct an Earth system analyses in order the answer the following questions: Are recent increases in the number and strength of hurricanes a result of an increased greenhouse effect and a warmer climate? Or are they the result of a natural cycle? Educational levels: Middle school, High school
Spill's Effects Underwater
This poster illustrates marine biologists' concerns about the effects of the oil slick from the 2011 Horizon Oil Spill and the use and impact of dispersants upon the life underwater. Educational levels: Middle school, High school, General public
Does Humidity Affect Cloud Formation?
In this lesson, students download cloud coverage and surface data from the NASA CERES S-COOL website student observation database, then use the Excel spreadsheet program to develop plots of the data. Students explore the relationship between cloud coverage and humidity for low-, mid-, and high-level clouds. The lesson provides detailed procedure, related links and sample graphs, follow-up questions and extensions, and Teacher Notes. Educational levels: Middle school
Space Mysteries
These inquiry-driven interactive Web explorations involve five mysteries that take advantage of students’ curiosity to build critical thinking and analytical skills. The mysteries are: Solar Supernova, Alien Bandstand, Live! From 2-Alpha, Star Market and Galactic Doom. Each mystery has been constructed to teach at least one physical science standards -e.g. conservation of energy, motion, or forces-, and is accompanied by materials to be used by teachers. Educational levels: Intermediate elementary, Middle school, High school
Hurricanes: Lesson and Global Impact
This interactive tutorial features the formation of a hurricane and it components, including weather pattern impact. In addition, comparative research of recent hurricanes and their global impact and frequency is provided for evaluation. Detailed explanation of storm surge as well as lesson plans, environmental consequences, assessments and critical thinking for students. Interactive simulations illustrate storm paths and intensity incorporating the Saffir-Simpson Scale. Educational levels: Middle school, High school, General public
Comment on Cherokee Removal GIS Activities
I believe this resource to be useful in teaching students about the removal of many Cherokee people from their homes in what would be called, "The Trail of Tears". I found the visual aids provided and written information to setup nicely what would be shown using the GIS data provided. I loaded this data into ArcExplorer and the mapping of the travel is laid out well, however, the outlying Western destinations are missing identification, whereas this is provided for the areas from which the Cherokee were being dispelled. Of course, data may be added to input these locations on the map.
Comment on Overcoming perceived GIS resource limitations
I really like the way that the site is set up to be very user friendly and also how it is no cost and simple to use. The use of a browser is something that my students would already know and would benefit them to be able to find out more information that way. I would probably make this a very simple inquiry for my young high school students using the information about GIS given and then have them use the website to find out more.
The Shape of Life PBS Series
This is an eight-part television series that reveals the dramatic rise of the animal kingdom through the breakthroughs of scientific discovery. Topics include origins of life, the first hunter, the conquerors, survival guide, the ultimate animal, explosion of life, and bones brawn and brains. Each topic offers text and a short video. Educational levels: Intermediate elementary, Middle school, High school, Undergraduate lower division
NOAA Arctic Report card 2010
Global Climate change is bringing about changes in the Arctic. This short video summarizes the changes that are occurring and concludes that they will continue. The report is based on numerous research reports from the region. Educational levels: Middle school, High school, Undergraduate lower division, Undergraduate upper division, Graduate or professional, General public
