    In March, 2005, the Environmental Protection Agency announced new rules for mercury that power plants release into the air when they burn coal to make electricity. The plan, called the Clean Air Interstate Rule (CAIR), is designed to limit the tonnage of mercury that is released per year. This lesson on mercury contamination begins with a video about CAIR, and has students read a short article about mercury contamination of aquatic ecosystems. A hands-on activity teaches students how to determine the percentage of mercury in a sample of coal. A demonstration about testing for mercury in coal and in drinking water using cold vapor atomic absorption spectrophotometry ends the lesson. Educational levels: Middle school, High school

    The Astromaterials Acquisition and Curation Office at Johnson Space Center is tasked to curate the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) collections of extraterrestrial samples. Five collections are currently curated: the Apollo lunar rocks and soils, meteorites from Antarctica, cosmic dust collected in the stratosphere, solar wind samples collected by the Genesis spacecraft, and interstellar and cometary dust samples collected during the Stardust mission. There is also a collection of space-exposed hardware (man-made items that have spent some time in space). Each collection is featured in its own subpage which includes a brief description of collection contents, instructions for requesting and returning samples, and links to additional information. Some of these materials are available upon request for research purposes, for display, or for educational purposes (including disks and thin sections).     This portal provides access to a wide variety of spatial data, imagery, and datasets. Themes include digital orthophotoquads, soils, precipitation, temperature, topographic maps, map indexes, hydrologic units, and common land units. Users can search for available data by geographic area such as county or state, use the point and click map tool to find their area of interest, use a gazetteer, or enter the latitude and longitude. The data is also searchable by theme. Thumbnails or samples of the data are provided so users can see if the material they have accessed is appropriate. The data can be downloaded directly, accessed by an ftp site, or ordered on media such as CD.     Nestled in the central Cascade Range of Oregon, the H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest is a living laboratory that provides unparalleled opportunities for the study of forest and stream ecosystems. During the last 21 years as a part of the National Science Foundation Long Term Ecological Research (NSF-LTER) program, the Andrews Experimental Forest has become a leader in the analysis of forest and stream ecosystem dynamics. Long-term field experiments and measurement programs have focused on climate dynamics, streamflow, water quality, and vegetation succession. Currently researchers are working to develop concepts and tools needed to predict effects of natural disturbance, land use, and climate change on ecosystem structure, function, and species composition. Data sets are accessible through this page including all core data sets of the Andrews LTER. New data sets, as well as older legacy data sets, are continually being added to this webpage. All data are provided with accompanying documentation compliant with existing LTER metadata content standards, and metadata can be generated in EML (Ecological Metadata Language) or as a PDF.     As a result of this lesson, students will be able to understand hazardous chemicals and their effects; the importance of cleaning up these materials; identify hazardous waste sites in their own neighborhoods; and recognize the agencies responsible for environmental hazards. First, they will examine online materials and answer some questions, then split into groups and engage in a role-playing activity in which they play the parts of residents of Love Canal, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) officials, and owners of a chemical plant which has been leaking chemicals into the ground. There are also online extension activities in which students do a web search to investigate the environmental uality of their own neighborhoods and examine case studies of highly polluted sites.     This lesson will reinforce the concept that Earth's seasons result from a combination of its orbit around the Sun and the tilt of its axis, and help to dispel two popular misconceptions of what causes the seasons. Students will use class discussion, activities, multimedia interactives, and videos to understand that the Northern and Southern Hemispheres experience opposite seasons and that the Earth's tilted axis of rotation affects the angle at which the Sun's rays strike its surface.
