Mysteries of the Sun
Mysteries of the Sun is a unique NASA resource on the web, in print, and with companion videos, introducing Heliophysics - the study of the Sun's influence throughout the solar system and, in particular, its connection to the Earth and Earth's extended space environment. Topics include space weather, solar variability, the heliosphere, Earth's magnetosphere, and the Earth's upper atmosphere. Educational levels: Informal education, General public
Space Place: What is the Secret Code Used by the Voyager Spacecraft?
This module from the Space Place Web site allows students to learn the secret code spacecraft use to send images back from space. It introduces the language of computers and spacecraft. Binary and hexadecimal notations are explained. The Space Place is an educational NASA site for children and adults with activities and facts related to the exploration of space – past, current and future. Some activities are computer-interactive and many are real-world-interactive. Educational levels: Intermediate elementary, Middle school, High school, Informal education
Japan (East Coast of Honshu) Tsunami, March 11, 2011: Main Event Page
The forecasting models displayed in this website are from NOAA Center for Tsunami Research featuring the Honshu, Japan tsunami. Forecast results, showing qualitative and quantitative information about the tsunami, including tsunami wave interaction with ocean floor bathymetric features, and neighboring coastlines are available for educators and students. Also included are interactive maps depicting model and sea level data comparison plots, global maximum wave amplitude and tsunami propagation animations. Educational levels: High school, Undergraduate lower division, Undergraduate upper division, Graduate or professional
The Water Cycle: O-18 and Ice Cores
This module introduces students to the use of proxy data as a way to determine past climate. Students will get an overview of proxy sources, with an emphasis on how the ratio of oxygen isotopes in ice cores is used to uncover information about paleoclimates. Students will work with raw ice core oxygen-18 and temperature data from Greenland (1829-1970) using Excel to create charts which will allow them to analyze data and draw conclusions about the connection between oxygen-18 levels and temperature. This module also includes a video, demonstration, formative assessment worksheet and graphing activity. Educational levels: Middle school, High school
Climate Change: Tips and Tricks for Teachers
This interactive teacher guide is part of NASA's Eyes on the Earth, which presents the latest climate information from NASA's Earth monitoring missions and research. It provides step-by-step instructions for six ways to use and initiate discussions about the NASA's Global Climate Change website in the classroom. Educational levels: Primary elementary, Intermediate elementary, Middle school, High school
The Inverse Square Law of Light
This activity gives an easy way for students to measure the relationship between distance and brightness. Once students discover the relationship, they can begin to understand how astronomers use this knowledge to determine the distances to stars and far away galaxies. Educational levels: Middle school, High school, Middle school, High school
Earth Science Picture of the Day
This Web site features a daily image of an unusual aspect of the Earth's system. Each image includes a description, when and where it occurred, and other information. Search the archive by keyword or browse by topic going back to 2000. Educational levels: Informal education, General public, Middle school, High school, Undergraduate lower division
