NewsHour Extra Lesson Plan: The Gulf Coast Region - Geography, Demographics and the Effects of Hurricane Katrina
On August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina, a category 4 storm, slammed into the Gulf Coast region of the U.S., flooding the city of New Orleans and heavily damaging the entire region. In this lesson, students investigate the disaster by using prior knowledge to brainstorm the definitions of sea level, levee, and storm surge. They will use news articles, a diagram of the New Orleans levee system, and a classroom activity simulating breaks in the levees as part of a class discussion about the facts surrounding Hurricane Katrina. Finally, they will create a graphic organizer that illustrates the negative impact of the hurricane on the Gulf Coast Region, and write opinion paragraphs about its long term effects based upon reasons, facts, and examples learned in class discussion and individual research. Educational levels: Middle school, High school
National Weather Service: Natural Hazard Statistics
This set of statistics, compiled by the National Weather Service's (NWS) Office of Services and the National Climatic Data Center, provides information on fatalities, injuries, and damage to property and crops caused by weather related hazards. They were complied from information contained in "Storm Data", a report comprising data from NWS forecast offices in the 50 states, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Virgin Islands. Statistical categories include lightning, tornadoes, tropical cyclones, heat, flooding, cold, winter storms, and wind. Each category is organized by year, from 1995 to the present. There are also summaries for the United States as a whole and for each of the 50 States and territories, organized by year. There is also a 65-year list of severe weather fatalities, arranged by year from 1940 to the present and grouped by weather type. Educational levels: High school, Undergraduate lower division, Undergraduate upper division, Graduate or professional
Plate Tectonics
In this lesson, students are introduced to the theory of plate tectonics and explore how the theory was developed and supported by evidence. Through class discussion, videos, and activities, students seek connections between tectonic activity and geologic features and investigate how the theory of plate tectonics evolved. Educational levels: Middle school
Shallow Water Waves
This is the fourth module in our series on open water waves. As deep-water waves approach the coastline, they encounter shallower water and begin to interact with the sea floor while evolving into shallow water waves. This module uses an interactive wave calculator to look at a variety of shallow-water wave behaviors, including shoaling, refraction, reflection, breaking, attenuation, and coastal run-up and set-up. All are important considerations when forecasting for small craft and other recreational interests in the near-shore environment. Educational levels: Graduate or professional
