Online Glacier Photograph Database
NSIDC houses over 15,000 photographic prints of glaciers, taken both from the air and from the ground. These photographs constitute an important historical record, as well as a data collection of interest to those studying the response of glaciers to climate change. More than 3,000 glacier photos are online, and most of these glaciers are in the Rocky Mountains, the Pacific Northwest, and Alaska. NewsHour Extra Lesson Plan: You Don't Need a Seismograph to Study Earthquakes
Increasingly, scientists are discovering ways to predict and prevent loss of life associated with earthquakes. This lesson will help students to understand earthquakes. The first portion consists of an online investigation in which students read news stories about recent earthquakes and their effects. Then, they perform an activity in which seismic waves (P and S waves) are simulated using a slinky and a length of rope. MY NASA DATA: Validation of Stratospheric Ozone
This lesson is designed to help students gain knowledge in using the MY NASA DATA Live Access Server (LAS) to specify and download a microset of data, then to use the data to investigate stratospheric ozone (ozone hole in particular). Using the LAS, student-groups will download a microset of stratospheric ozone data collected by the SAGE III instrument for a particular location. They will also plot a microset of field-campaign data used for validation. The two sets of data will be plotted using a graphing calculator, and analyzed for correlation between the two microsets. MY NASA DATA: Cloud Patterns in Toronto, Ontario, Canada
This lesson is designed to help students gain knowledge in graphing a microset of data, then using the graphs to investigate trends in cloud coverage over a given locale. Students are provided content-related activities to enhance background knowledge in cloud types, and then are provided detailed instructions on how to download data from the MY NASA DATA Live Access Server (LAS) and to use Excel to graph the data. The graphs are then used to explore trends in cloud coverage over Toronto, Ontario, Canada for a given time period.
