Comment on Rock Formation (title provided or enhanced by cataloger)
I have issue with this one part: "Explain that igneous rocks are those that are fire-made or volcanic rocks. They have small mineral pieces because they cooled quickly. Display trays of graphite so the students can see the large crystals in obsidian and explain that this looks like it contains pieces of glass. " As you know some igneous rocks are plutonic and have large crystals. Offer an example of a plutonic rock, too. Obsidian IS glass, not pieces of glass. Use obsidian without any impurities. What are the large crystals in it?? What is the graphite about?
Flooding in West Africa: An ASMET Project
The rainy season in Sahelian West Africa extends from June to September and is tied to the position of the intertropical front. During this period, mesoscale convective systems (MCSs) often produce significant rainfall that can lead to flooding. This module examines an extreme flooding event that occurred in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso from 31 August to 1 September 2009. Learners assume the role of forecaster, assessing meteorological conditions to see if an MSC will develop that can lead to heavy rain and flooding. They follow a forecast process that emphasizes the use of satellite data, standard surface and upper-air charts, and model output. The forecast process is tied to a conceptual model of the key thermodynamic features that drive convective activities in West Africa. Educational levels: Undergraduate upper division, Graduate or professional
Alberta Clipper Case Exercise
This case study focuses on a snow and blowing snow event in the Canadian prairies and US northern high plains on 11-13 November 2003. The key aim of this module is to step through the forecast process during an Alberta Clipper event from the perspective of a forecaster with the Meteorological Service of Canada. This involves consideration of various observations and model guidance, identification of potential areas of snowfall and blowing snow, nowcasting snowfall development and termination, and considering and providing nowcast updates throughout. Educational levels: Undergraduate upper division, Graduate or professional
Weather, Climate, Climate Change and Actions
This e-book contains the basics of weather and climate, climate change, and basic actions one can do to combat climate change. Included are embedded videos, slideshows, readings, and graphics. Discussion questions follow each section or chapter. This resource allows one to learn and/or use in a variety of ways integrating online resources that extend the learning, specifically flash animations, online labs, videos, curriculum, and readings. An iPad version is also available. Educational levels: Middle school, High school
Comment on Enviropedia
There is no information about enviropedia publishing dates or authors on the actual pages presenting the information. This makes it hard for students to cite information references from data presented there. Authorship and publisher/dates should be on every one of the articles (or there should be a source tag you can click on) on each of the pages. Thanks!
A Forecaster's Overview of the Northwest Pacific
This module provides an introduction to the northwest Pacific for weather forecasters. It touches on major aspects of the geography, oceanography, and climatology. Geography looks at plate tectonics, topography, and human population. Oceanography examines ocean currents, coastal tidal ranges, and sea ice distribution. Climatology briefly discusses jets streams, distribution of synoptic features, storm tracks of tropical and extratropical cyclones, the fronts, and sensible weather associated with the Northeast and Southwest Monsoons. Educational levels: Undergraduate upper division, Graduate or professional
Teacher in the Air: Dr. Diane's Flight with the NOAA Hurricane Hunters
As a NOAA Teacher in the Air, Stanitski flew aboard the NOAA P-3 hurricane hunter (nicknamed "Miss Piggy") during the 2005 East Coast Hurricane Awareness Tour. The book covers the hurricane research that is conducted aboard the aircraft, including the deployment of dropsondes, instruments that measure weather conditions within a hurricane. One of the purposes of the book is to help teachers and their students become more aware of actions they can take to prepare for hurricanes and protect themselves and their families. It is written at the middle school science level and was reviewed and edited by middle school science teachers and scientists. Its content includes science and math activities, a glossary of terms and full-color images. Educational levels: Intermediate elementary, Middle school, Primary elementary
Science Class: Free Chemistry and Physics Lessons
This free website will help you to enrich your learning in science. It provides free science online ressources for kids, students, beginners, parents looking for homeworks help and everyone curious about physics and chemistry. It can be useful for self studying, to review lessons, to prepare for science exams, for learning scientific basis and even for school projects. All learners can access without restriction to science lessons in various fields such as chemistry, electricity, optics or mechanics written with scientific rigor. Most of these lessons, written with simple words, include basics notions making them understandable by everyone. Educational levels: Middle school, High school
Cartesian Divers: Experimenting with Pressure and Density
Ocean FEST is a program of hands-on, ocean-themed science activities for students in grades 3-6 and/or their families. Our goals are to: (1) educate participants about ocean and earth science issues that are relevant to their communities; and (2) inspire students--especially those from underrepresented groups--to pursue careers in the ocean and earth sciences. This activity has students make predictions and conduct experiments with their own Cartesian diver. Educational levels: Intermediate elementary, Middle school
Nautical Knots & Marine Science Careers
Ocean FEST is a program of hands-on, ocean-themed science activities for students in grades 3-6 and/or their families. Our goals are to: (1) educate participants about ocean and earth science issues that are relevant to their communities; and (2) inspire students--especially those from underrepresented groups--to pursue careers in the ocean and earth sciences. This worksheet introduces students to marine science as a career. Educational levels: Intermediate elementary, Middle school
