    Aiding forensic investigations using machine learning

    Advances in machine learning find rapid adoption in many fields ranging from communications, signal processing, and the automotive industry to healthcare, law, and forensics. In this talk, I briefly focus on a couple of research projects revolving around machine learning and forensic investigations: a) A biometric tool based on vein pattern recognition for CSAI investigations, b) Prediction and reconstruction of wear patterns on footwear outsoles. These research projects mainly rely on cutting-edge machine learning algorithms applied to forensics area for helping law enforcement agencies identify criminals/victims

    The potentiating effects of different warm-up protocols on sprint cycling performance

    Analysing current knowledge surrounding acute post activation potentiation (PAP) of athletic performance, this study investigated whether using accommodating resistance or modified band resistance (MBR) will enhance sprint performance more than using a standard resistance (SR) load or a standard warm-up. Investigations determined whether a modified band resistance (MBR) back squat, offered advantages over a standard resistance (SR) back squat or a standard warm-up to potentiate sprint cycling performance for athletes. The study used an experimental crossover design to examine the effects of different warm up protocols, on the potentiation of sprint cycling performance. Fifteen participants (n=8; age 18 ± 2 years; height 172.5 ± 4.2 cm; weight 66.9 ± 8.0 kg; training age 16 ± 4 months; 3RM 67.5 ± 13.6 kg) consented to participate and completed baseline testing (BL). Due to circumstances surrounding the outcome of covid-19, only 8 participants completed all testing, subsequently affecting the reliability of the analysis. Baseline testing included a back squat three-repetition maximum (3RM), 250m time trial (5, 10, 125, 250m splits recorded) from a standing start position. Pre-testing measurement of a three-repetition max (RM) for a squat, seven days before BL testing of warm-up protocols. The testing order adhered to on each occasion was: standard warm-up (SWU), standard resistance (SR) and the modified resistance (MBR). Testing was conducted at a standardised time of day for each testing session and in accordance with normal hub training session timings. Data also consisted of a subjective measurement as participants were asked to record their differentiated perceived effort (RPE) following each warm-up protocol. Objective data collected from the sprint cycling performance represented the dependent variables which were analysed; specifically, the maximal effort 250 metre (m) time trial along with split times (5, 10, 125m). In addition, power data after each testing session were also summarized using appropriate software designed specifically for the purpose of evaluating Schoberer Rad Messtechnik (SRM) data collected from track cyclists. Power output was expressed as watts (W) was calculated as the highest power achieved for each session. All data was presented as the average (± SD) of the trial at each split during each testing session. This data was then analysed using t-Test (paired between two sample for mean) with significance set at P ≤ 0.05. In addition, time trial data was analysed using magnitude-based inferences. Comparisons of individual SWU bike speeds for SR and MBR was analysed. The current findings recognised, at the 5m point SR offers a likely small benefit (0.03s; 0.0091; 99.5% chance) compared with MBR. At the 10m split SR again offers advantages over SWU (possibly; 25% chance; 0.034; 0.02) and MBR (very likely, 99.5% chance; 0.047; 0.016). There is a likely small effect (95% chance) that SR offers a benefit over MBR at the 250m time (0.28; 0.13). Regarding power data, only five participants only had access to power meters however this information was used to provide insight into the potentiating effects of different warm-up protocols. This study aims to advance the general understanding on the potentiating effects of different warm-up protocols for sprint cycling performance and will help inform the practice of physical preparation coaches, specialist coaches, and cyclists

    In early 2020, members of the international, nursing and research teams at Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology, New Zealand, met with a number of education and practice providers in China, to explore an education and research collaboration. These discussions facilitated the establishment of the Sino-New Zealand Aged Healthcare Association (SNZAH) which currently has 15 inaugural New Zealand members including academic staff, medical and healthcare practitioners, and aged care professionals. Membership is growing with the launch of a website, and interest from other Chinese universities and technical institutes. The advent and impact of COVID-19 has certainly stymied our progress. However, our early adoption of cultural lens theory as a way of understanding one another’s contexts and drivers has enabled us to ‘keep calm and carry on’, and even begin to thrive. We have conducted an initial iterative review into good practice in aged healthcare in New Zealand and achieved several co-authored research publications; we have held an online symposium with simultaneous translation options; and we have established a Learning Centre in Chengdu – all from our New Zealand base, and despite a raft of challenges. This paper outlines the roles of effective leadership and management in pursuing goals of internationalisation, when all the usual protocols of relationship-building have had to be revisited. We are also interested in connecting with readers who may be involved in similar collaborations in the aged healthcare and nursing sector

    Perceiving place: How can a gallery use the five senses to enhance remembrance and provide an inclusive multisensory experience?

    The human body is gifted with the ability to perceive, interact and experience space using our senses. This research project explores the intricate relationship between human sensory perception, architecture, and memory, focusing on the historical and cultural context of Aotearoa, New Zealand. This project delves into the impact of colonisation and decolonisation, focusing on the case of Rangipuke, Albert Park in Auckland. It explores the concept put forward by Author Jennifer Cole of ‘historical forgettng’ and the intentional suppression of memories related to the colonial past. The project seeks to follow Linda Tuhiwai Smith‘s line of argument for the importance of acknowledging and integrating indigenous perspectives and methodologies in the process of decolonisation. By bridging the gap between historical memory and modern everyday life, the research emphasises the need to transform existing structures and design philosophies within museums and public spaces. Equally, the research project examines sensory experiences in architecture through the lens of phenomenology, drawing on the works of influential theorists like Juhani Pallasmaa, Peter Zumthor and Christian Norberg-Schulz. Pallasmaa has suggested to go beyond the conventional understanding of the five senses, to include the atmospheric sense. Exploring this sixth sense reveals the integral role of sensory perception in experiencing a space. Pallasmaa’s concept of atmosphere emphasises that the mood and essence of a space cannot be fully apprehended through visual stimuli alone; this needs to be a bodily sensory experience. This notion aligns with the insights of Swiss Architect Peter Zumthor, who underscores the intricate relationship between senses and memories, asserting that our recollection of a space is intricately intertwined with our sensory connections. Consequently, sensory experience emerges as an inseparable companion to the notion of memory. Adopting a sensory-driven approach to design thus becomes a compelling means to establish and evoke a profound connection to architecture and place. This research project seeks to create an architectural intervention that fosters a genuine connection between visitors and Albert Park, enabling the past to thrive and empowering its entry into the future. By utilising the full range of human senses and integrating cultural and historical contexts, the interactive installations within the park will serve as a means of storytelling, evoking emotions, and providing a multi-sensory experience to connect all visitors to place

    This co-authored paper centres the Māori cultural practice of tangi, both as a way to heal and to be heard, for four new and emerging Māori community health researchers involved in a Kaupapa Māori research mentorship. If research mentorships are about growing research capability and capacity, we highlight here that another important ‘c’ comes first – confidence. For over 20 years, Kaupapa Māori theory and research have carved out critically important space for Māori to research ‘as Māori’ in academia, yet omnipresent colonialism continues to cast doubts on the validity of our voices as researchers, and our ‘worthiness’ or ability to step confidently into research space. Here, four emerging Māori researchers who are committed to making research-informed health changes in our communities share how our confidence to ‘do’ research grew during a summer Kaupapa Māori research mentorship. We each experience the emotion of tangi – be it a bird’s call or weeping – in different ways. Therefore, rather than offer advice on ‘how to become confident as an emerging Kaupapa Māori researcher’, this co-authored paper encourages you to hear, and importantly feel, these stories about ‘becoming’ and to consider how research must do better to create more Kaupapa Māori-led opportunities for Māori to confidently step into research with, and for, their communities
