ABSTRACT
Software development has experienced rapid growth and advancement, leading to the adoption of state-of-the-art designs, methods, techniques, and tools to deliver high-quality software solutions. However, proficiency in programming alone is insufficient for ensuring reliable, feasible, cost-effective, and high-quality software products. Developers must consider various aspects of the software development life cycle (SDLC) to enhance software solutions. This includes analytical and critical thinking skills, envisioning real-world business cases, and emphasizing quality assurance through thorough testing. Furthermore, cost-effective software solutions can be achieved through detailed project requirements and scope, outsourcing options, sound project planning, and agile methodologies for handling requirement changes.
A gap identified in software development is the lack of a comprehensive and generic integration framework for software systems integration. Such a framework would provide developers with the necessary knowledge and resources to successfully undertake industrial software integration projects and deliver leading solutions. Without proper guidance, developers may face challenges in upskilling themselves in software integration.
This research proposes a generic integration development framework to produce and deliver high-quality software integration solutions. The framework offers step-by-step guidance throughout each phase of the SDLC, drawing insights from real-world software integration projects. A case study is conducted to demonstrate the application of the proposed framework in a software integration project. The case study involves the development of a small-scale web application using the ReactJS front-end development framework, integrating with the OpenWeather API to retrieve weather forecasting data.
The proposed framework is evaluated through a comparative analysis of selected software quality factors: functionality, efficiency, and maintainability. Functionality encompasses accuracy of data fetched through API requests and API security, efficiency focuses on optimal resource utilization for application performance, and maintainability emphasizes code maintainability for future improvements. The analysis validates the improved reliability achieved by implementing the proposed software integration framework and highlights the quality of the final product compared to the pre-framework implementation.
By bridging this research gap and providing a generic integration framework, this research contributes to the advancement of software integration practices. It equips developers with the understanding and insights required to excel in software integration projects, ultimately leading to the development of reliable and high-quality software solutions

Hierarchical structure and feeding behaviors of free-range hens (Gallus gallus domesticus)
Chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus) are a social species and will form a hierarchy through agonistic dyadic encounters. This hierarchy will affect how different members of the flock access food, which may affect the specific feeding behaviors of the hens. The hierarchy of a 20-hen flock was determined by analyzing videoed dyadic encounters between the hens and creating a dominance matrix. The feeding behaviors were assessed by simultaneously offering free food via a feeder and food distributed in the grass requiring foraging. Overall, all hens preferred to forage, however, significantly more dominant birds ate at the feeder than neutral or subordinate birds. Foraging is a natural behavior that chickens will innately perform and is related to a positive welfare state. The methodology for determining the flock hierarchy and measuring feeding choices could be tested within the intensive farming environment to elucidate potential effects of dominance on feeding methods in commercial hens
How does trauma impact on adults’ ability to obtain and sustain employment?
This research project focused on “How does trauma impact on adults’ ability to obtain and sustain employment?” Using an occupational therapy focused lens, this research project aimed to address the limitations of other studies, which do not explore understanding of the effects trauma has functionally on employment. It also sought to reflect the unique bi-cultural Aotearoa New Zealand context to include Māori and their experiences in obtaining and sustaining employment, which is missing in other literature on this topic.
An interpretive description methodology was used, and semi-structured interviews were completed with four participants. The data acquired was analysed using a reflexive thematic analysis to identify key themes. The varied way trauma impacts on participants ability to obtain and sustain employment was shown through the resultant themes of employment being the right fit; managing health and wellbeing; readiness to work; and being able to “work to live, not live to work”.
The findings showed that obtaining employment was influenced by: employers’ attitudes; having choice over productive roles; flexibility of hours for accommodating needs; accessing support and applying strategies being offered by services; the ability to work; and developing skills through higher education or volunteering pathways. Functionally sustaining employment was most effective if: the workplace environment was conducive; employers and colleagues’ attitudes were supportive; adequately able to navigate trauma responses for managing wellbeing; contracted hours and task demands were achievable without exceeding these; and work-life balance was achieved through engagement with positive occupations outside of employment.
The importance of working to support individuals in a trauma informed way was highlighted, and the results provided expected and unexpected insights into the experiences of four unemployed participants who had experienced trauma. Future research should expand on wider sampling to provide more diversity, as well as more evidence-based guidelines for supporting those who have experienced trauma to return to employment and applying these recommendations into employment settings
Teacher capability development at Unitec: A case study
This paper explores the Teacher Capability Development (TCD) project at Unitec, which aims to improve kaiako (teacher) professional development and ākonga (student) outcomes through a competencybased approach, applied practice, and the use of digital credentials (badges). The project was evaluated using the Kirkpatrick model, assessing participants’ reactions, learning and behaviour, and organisational performance impact. Initially resistant, participants eventually embraced the project, demonstrating its success in addressing their concerns. Participants’ learning was evident in their badge submissions, demonstrating their skills applied in teaching. The project’s adaptability was highlighted during the Covid-19 pandemic, when the online environment facilitated the use of technology tools. Badges as digital credentials provided a tangible way to recognise achievements. The evaluation extended to the project’s impact on behaviour and organisational performance. Organisational evaluations revealed increased adoption of course changes due to TCD professional development, fostering continuous improvement. Ākonga reported high net promoter scores, indicating improved satisfaction and outcomes.
Implications of the TCD project include designing competency-based projects, integrating applied practice for continuous improvement, leveraging technology for development, and recognising achievements through digital credentials. The findings emphasise the importance of investing in ongoing teacher development to enhance ākonga success

Communication in restricted situations: The use of orofacial expressions in different speech modes and when wearing a face mask
Speakers in their communications integrate auditory and visual information produced by face and body to communicate intended meanings. One of the core questions on the association between visual and spoken components of language is how various visual movements accompanying the speech contribute to the way the speech is uttered i.e., speech prosody. A substantial number of studies have demonstrated the prominent contribution of facial expressions and other forms of visual correlates to the auditory properties of prosody in voiced speech. However, the literature has merely questioned what happens when F0, the most important prosodic cue, is absent from the acoustic signal, as is the case in whispered speech. A possible answer to this question can be interpreted in terms of trading relations. While on one hand, according to trade-off hypothesis, different modalities can compensate for the absence or reduced occurrence of another based on the requirements of situational constrains, on the other hand, hand-in-hand hypothesis views the relation between gestures and speech in parallel or redundant rather than compensatory in the sense that gestures basically express information that can be derived from the spoken content alone.. Building on these two hypotheses, we address the relation between orofacial expressions and acoustic cues of prosody under two specific communicative constraints. First, we examine if the relation between orofacial gestures and acoustic cues of intonation changes in two speech modes of normal and whispered speech differing in the presence or absence of fundamental frequency. Second, based on previous empirical studies reporting the effect of face masks on acoustic deterioration of an utterance, we investigate if various orofacial gestures such as the movements of eyebrows, lip aperture, and eye-squint are affected by wearing a protective face mask in comparison to a condition where the speakers do not use a facial mask. This article presents the Distributed Resource Centre as a soft, low-cost, generative, and fun decentralised infrastructure for neighbourhood creativity.
