Notes from the field: A collective community food initiative in suburban Whangārei
Bringing a community development lens to place often begins with a study of the community, utilising demographics, observation, and a review of literature and local communications. In Aotearoa New Zealand, Stats NZ produces very useful summaries from each census. These are titled Place Summaries and give detailed demographic data about relatively small areas, and are a great resource to community development practitioners. Unless otherwise cited, all statistics in this paper are derived from the Raumanga Place Summary from the 2006, 2013 and 2018 census data. Raumanga, the focus of this community food initiative, sits astride State Highway 1 on the southern edge of Whangārei, although the outskirts of Otaika are growing, making Raumanga a more central suburb. A 1986 archaeological study (Rickard, 1986) found the area rich in sites of pre-European occupation and cultivation. Raumanga means ‘many branches’ and refers to the dozens of streams and springs in this fertile valley. Lower Raumanga was once an important swamp and river basin famous amongst local Māori as a food basket and place of recreation much favoured by children (Vallance, 1956
Microcredentials pilot project: Final report
This report sets out the process, results and findings from a pilot project carried out to investigate how microcredentials could be used to provide an alternative pathway for part of the New Zealand Diploma in Engineering (Civil) qualification. The project was undertaken by tutors from the Unitec Institute of Technology from February 2019 to November 2019. It built on previous research work undertaken by Unitec to determine how the NZDE programme could be delivered using smaller learning packages recognised by microcredentials
Walking backwards into the future in Te Pokapū Tāone, Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland’s city centre
Te pokapū tāone o Tāmaki, Auckland’s city centre, is the belly of Tāmaki Makaurau, Aotearoa New Zealand’s fastest growing residential neighbourhood and a significant contributor to the region and to the country. Globally, cities have been significantly impacted by Covid-19 and this has led to questions of the viability of city centres and central business districts and their future role. If we look to the patterns of this wāhi, or place, Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland’s city centre has been founded on, and will continue to be, a neighbourhood, drawing together diverse functions such as being a place for people to live, for trade, for education and for entertainment. However, we know that the city-centre experience will change, and we need to look far into the future to help the city centre become a resilient place that supports human and environmental wellbeing. This paper outlines the importance of future thinking in planning, development and programming, and behaviour change to support the city centre to be a healthy neighbourhood and to become a resilient place for people
Future nursing workforce: Is it time for planned anti-ageism education as part of preparation for practice?
The study reported on in this poster is part of larger work programme to re-imagine preparation of the future nursing workforce.
The ‘Better Later Life (2019-2034)’1 strategy sets out key action areas for addressing a response to New Zealand’s ageing population. It recognises the importance of promoting healthy ageing and improving access to services as fundamental to achieving ‘Better Later Life’. A key factor underpinning this action is the involvement of healthcare professionals. Nurses are uniquely situated at the forefront of healthcare to support physical and mental health and to positively impact quality of life through service coordination. Yet, as research has shown, discriminatory attitudes are prevalent. When translated into service delivery, such attitudes can be barriers to the effective organisation of care packages, contributing to the overall cost of healthcare.

The role of manual therapy for osteopaths in the management of temporomandibular disorders: A qualitative study
INTRODUCTION
Temporomandibular disorders are common and can affect people’s health-related quality of life in many ways. Often, managing the condition can be complex and many strategies are utilised to provide positive outcomes for patients. This qualitative study aims to explore the role of osteopathic manual therapy in the management of this condition.
METHODS
Osteopathic clinics and practitioners in New Zealand that advertise the management of temporomandibular disorders were targeted for recruitment to the study. Participants that met the inclusion criteria participated in semi structured interviews, where their opinions, experiences and beliefs on the topic were explored, transcribed and analysed.
FINDINGS
Of the 54 clinics and practitioners contacted, 6 met the inclusion criteria and participated in the study. The rich data provided by the participants led to the development of three overarching themes; Osteopathic Role, Management and Collaboration which explicate where and why osteopathic manual therapy may be indicated as effective for the management of temporomandibular disorders.
CONCLUSION
Osteopaths can and do play a role in the management of temporomandibular disorders. This study highlights areas where further research should be conducted in order to understand where the role of osteopathic manual therapy can be most effective in the management paradigm

Nuclear medicine applications in prostate cancer
In recent years, the incidence of prostate cancer has been the highest ever recorded due to earlier and more accurate detection and an increase in the average lifetime. Prostate cancer is now the second most common malignancy amongst all cancers in men and the fourth most common overall.
The American Cancer Society has identified prostate cancer as the second leading cause of mortality from oncological causes in the United States, accounting for an estimated 268,490 newly diagnosed cases and 34,500 deaths in 2022. The National Cancer Institute predicts that the average American man has an 11% risk of being diagnosed with prostate cancer at some point in life and a 2.5% overall risk of dying from the disease.
Globally, there were more than 1.4 million new cases of prostate cancer diagnosed worldwide in 2020, accounting for 375,304 deaths.[1][2][3] Prostate cancer has been identified as the most commonly diagnosed malignancy in 112 countries worldwide and the leading cause of cancer mortality in 48.[2][4]
Timely diagnosis leading to earlier and more effective treatment is required to reduce the significant morbidity and mortality rates. Nuclear medicine has several new and revolutionary prostate cancer detection, localization, staging, and treatment tools utilizing targeted therapy.[5][6] The expanding role nuclear medicine plays in managing prostate cancer will be discussed in detail in the following review.

Promoting kaitiakitanga using picturebooks.
Kaitiakitanga is promoted in the revised curriculum document Te Whāriki—He Whāriki Mātauranga mō ngā Mokopuna o Aotearoa: Early Childhood Curriculum (Ministry of Education, 2017). The authors give primacy to the Māori world-view of sustainable living through engaging with, and protecting, the natural environment. This article reports on a picturebook research project designed to support teachers to explore kaitiakitanga with young children in early childhood education settings. Two Aotearoa New Zealand picturebooks are featured, curriculum links are proposed, and feedback from a small sample of teachers about the picturebooks and curriculum links is reported. Picturebooks are powerful teaching tools and can provoke learning across the curriculum, as this research highlights
