Evaluation of 10G Ethernet under various environments
In this 120-credit thesis, we present a comprehensive investigation into the performance of 10 Gigabit per second Ethernet technology, using a testbed focusing on the throughput and round-trip time performance parameters. We investigate the behavior of TCP, UDP, IPV4, and IPV6 protocols in 10Gb Ethernet using three distinct copper cables, namely CAT6a, CAT7, and CAT8 shielded cable S/FTP. We also investigate how results for these cables and protocols vary.
The maximum throughput results for 10Gb Ethernet are 9.2366 Gbps for UDP with IPv4 and CAT8 crossover copper cable. The minimum throughput is 6.0716 Gbps with TCP with IPv6 and CAT7 cable using a 10G switch. We could not reach the 10 Gbps theoretical limit.
IPv4 has higher throughput than IPv6, the throughput is 8.9683 Gbps for IPv4 while it is 6.1583 Gbps for IPv6 using Cat8 cable and for TCP protocol. UDP has higher throughput than TCP, the maximum throughput for TCP is 8.968 Gbps while it is 9.030 for UDP using Cat 8 cable. CAT8 cable performs better than other cables. For packet size 1408 bytes, the maximum throughput for CAT8 and UDP with IPv4 using a switch is 9.030 Gbps; for CAT6a the throughput is 9.020 Gbps, while CAT7 registers 8.951 Gbps. Using a switch lowers the throughput, for CAT8 cable with a packet size of 1408 bytes using UDP and IPv4 protocols, the result was 9.236 Gbps with crossover cable.
These findings aid in cable selection, protocol considerations, and system resource management for optimal protocol and media performance in a 10 Gbps Ethernet environment
Canine hookworm presence in Tongatapu, Tonga
Dogs are common in Tonga, where they exist in a close relationship with humans as pets and guard dogs and often are free-roaming due to limited property fencing and the need to scavenge for food. Little is known about the health status of these dogs and the type and level of pathogens carried by them. In this study, blood and fecal samples were analyzed to identify the presence of endoparasites and determine packed cell volume (PCV) values for dogs in Tonga. The current data deficit in this area made it necessary to develop a methodology and collect preliminary data to assist with future research in Tonga. Fecal analysis revealed hookworm in 73% of dogs, primarily those 4–12 mo old. Hematologic evaluation revealed low to borderline low PCV in 87% of dogs. The zoonotic nature of some of the pathogens identified poses a public health risk, with a particular risk for children
The challenges of TinyML implementation: A literature review
This study aims to sensitise and summarise the tiny machine learning (TinyML) implementation literature. TinyML is a subset of machine learning (ML) that focuses on implementing ML models on resource constrained devices such as microcontrollers, embedded systems, and internet of things (IoT) devices. A systematic literature review is performed on the works published in this field in the last decade. The key focus of this article is to understand the critical challenges faced by this emerging technology. We present five significant challenges of TinyML, namely, limited and dynamic resources, heterogeneity, network management, security and privacy, and model design. This article will be of interest to researchers and practitioners who are interested in the fields of ML, IoT and edge computing
Distant landscapes: Finding harmony in the work of Roberto Burle Marx
Roberto Burle Marx was a renowned Brazilian artist, gardener and landscape architect who perhaps came to greatest acclaim through painting with plants using modernist curves and mass planting of varied plant form, colour, and texture. His strong designs read like a 2D landscape tapestry when viewed from above and his fascination with landscapes and Brazilian native plants fuelled his many plant-hunting expeditions. Burle Marx (BM) promoted the use of native flora and was a passionate conservationist who worked with famous Brazilian architects to sculpt 3D gardens composed of careful arrangements of volumes and shapes that surrounded and complemented their modernist buildings. This paper proposes that he was influenced by the anthropophagic movement that emerged in early 1920s São Paulo, which represented consumption or ‘cannibalisation’ of existing cultures, ideas, and beliefs and their subsequent transformation into something that reflected Latin American civilisation and its sense of identity. A rich fusion that is uniquely Brazilian resulted - embracing European, indigenous, and black African heritage. The movement influenced art, music, religion, design, and architecture. We present the case that BM infused his garden-making with an anthropophagic approach which influenced his conservation and use of native Brazilian plants. Further, we argue that this has created more harmonious outcomes and is part of the enduring regard for BM both within Brazil and internationally

The Impact of Reducing Food, Paper and Consumable Wastage for the Hotel Industry: A Case Study of a Hotel in Invercargill, New Zealand
In this study, the researcher explores the impact of reducing food, paper, and consumable wastage on the hotel industry as a case study for the Hotel ABC in Invercargill, New Zealand. The hotel industry is one of the major contributors to environment pollution, the research purpose was to identify the impact of reducing this wastage on the environment as well as on the hotel industry. The study used a mixed method design; a questionnaire and interviews. Printed questionnaires were distributed to the in-house guests and forty completed questionnaires were collected. In-depth interviews were held with three hotel management staff covering three departments: food and beverage, front office, and housekeeping. The analysed data identified that portion control, buffet management, and dietary inclusivity are essential for food waste reduction. Electronic systems throughout the hotel operations were identified as a method for paper waste reduction. Reusable bathroom amenities and hygiene concern were found to be necessary for consumables waste reduction. The analysis further found that by reducing these wastages, Hotel ABC can benefit from the environment, operational efficiency, and customer satisfaction. The findings also elaborated on the initiatives taken by Hotel ABC to reduce waste. The researcher suggests for future research to consider the overall impact of waste reduction by considering all types of waste generated by the hotel industry, to gain a holistic idea
Use of stacked microcredentials for a diploma in structural detailing
Most qualifications recognise the competencies of a learner at the completion of their qualification which is usually several years after they start their studies. However, learners have different competencies at each stage of their studies and may be competent to undertake some roles in industry before they complete their qualification. There is a need to recognise when a learner is ready to enter an industry and to recognise their developing competencies as they learn while they work. Microcredentials offer the ability to break a larger qualification into parts that recognise the competencies of a learner as they progress through a larger qualification

Leveraging digital transformation to address women's challenges in the technology industry
The rapid progress in information and communication technologies has positively impacted the economies of many countries, including New Zealand and Australia. However, women remain underrepresented in the ICT workforce, making up only 23% in New Zealand and 29% in Australia. Following the explosive growth of remote work technologies during the COVID-19 lockdowns and the wide acceptance of hybrid working policies after the pandemic, this thesis explores the transformative potential of digital technologies in addressing the persistent challenges faced by women in this historically male-dominated industry. Grounded in the field-specific ability beliefs theory, this study employs a qualitative research design. 15 in-depth interviews were conducted with women professionals across various technology sectors of New Zealand and Australia. Participants, with an average of ten years of experience, offer nuanced insights into their stories, providing a comprehensive understanding of how digital transformations may help mitigate their challenges.
The findings reveal that new digital tools, a modern software development approach, continuous learning practices and the normalisation of flexible work arrangements have helped to mitigate common women’s challenges, such as balancing career with family obligations, professional isolation and limited access to career advancement opportunities. They have also shifted the perception of the whole industry to be more appealing to women. Furthermore, the study presents recommendations suggested by participants on how to support and empower women across the industry and foster a more equitable landscape, being segmented into the three distinct career stages of initial recruitment, career advancements and retaining employees
Additional bryophyte taxa from the Cook Islands
It is evident that the bryophyte flora of the Cook Islands remains poorly documented. Here, ten moss species and five liverwort species of Lepidoziaceae are newly reported for the Cook Islands. These records include Calomnion denticulatum, previously known only from Samoa, Ectropothecium viridifolium, previously known only from Hawai’i, and Tricholepidozia quadriseta, previously known only from Australia. Also, thirteen new island records of mosses are reported for Outer Islands of the group and additional information is provided for some previously published report
