Investigating users' engagement with LLMs: A multi-case analysis study

ABSTRACT
Large Language Models (LLMs), such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, are powerful AI systems. They understand and generate human-like text with fluency. LLMs show remarkable capabilities across many applications. Their integration into everyday life is rapidly increasing. With rising popularity, ensuring effective user engagement is crucial. However, limited research exists on how different user characteristics, such as education, computing proficiency, and prior AI experience, impact their interaction with these systems. This study aims to explore the relationship between user attributes, prompting strategies, and user experience (UX) when interacting with ChatGPT. Specifically, it investigates how users from varying educational backgrounds, technical expertise, and AI experience formulate prompts and how these factors influence users’ engagement with LLMs.
The conducted research employed a multi-case study methodology. A two-part experiment was conducted with 31 participants who were selected using convenience and snowball sampling methods. The first part of the experiment was to complete a predefined trip planning task using ChatGPT. The second part was collecting participant feedback through a structured survey instrument. The survey captured user background characteristics and user experience metrics. The survey instrument also measured various user experience constructs identified through literature, such as performance expectancy and effort expectancy, self-efficacy, social influence, and trust in the use of ChatGPT.
Exploratory factor analysis revealed strong evidence of the underlying factor structure (performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, self-efficacy, and trust), aligning them with respective theoretical constructs and supporting their validity. Quantitative and qualitative analysis of user prompts collected from the first part of the experiment was the core of the study. Quantitative analysis included measures such as prompt count, word count, lexical diversity, readability and error counts. Qualitative measures were utilized to identify prompt attributes, prompting techniques and the overall prompting approach taken.
Participants were grouped based on their educational level, computing proficiency, and prior AI experience, and their prompting strategies were analysed for clarity, specificity, contextual relevance, and task orientation. The findings reveal that structured, iterative prompting approaches lead to better user outcomes, such as higher user experience and intention to use ChatGPT in the future. As expected, users with higher computing proficiency and prior AI experience employed more effective prompting strategies, while novices tended to rely on less structured, trial-and-error approaches.
Interestingly, higher levels of education were associated with more precise prompting but also with lower overall user experience, suggesting that more educated users may have higher expectations or a more critical view of AI's limitations. The study also found that prior AI experience positively influenced prompting effectiveness, though it did not always correlate with fewer grammatical errors, indicating that clarity of intent is more important than linguistic precision. Further, expert level of computing proficiency and prior AI experience were associated with significantly reduced trust in ChatGPT.
This research contributes to the growing field of human-AI interaction by providing insights into how user characteristics shape AI engagement. The study's findings emphasise the need for user-friendly interfaces and AI literacy to ensure that a broad range of users can effectively engage with AI systems like ChatGPT
Transitional harmony: Bridging the heritage of Galle with modern urban life

ABSTRACT
Against the backdrop of monumental architectural heritage and rapid urban development in Galle, there is an urgent requirement to fill in the gap that exists between historical and contemporary urban environments. From its colonial times to traditional Sri Lankan architecture, the city of Galle has undergone a transformation. Its landmarks as cultural expressions have come under threat in the contemporary era. This project deals with redesigning the pavilion of the Galle International Cricket Stadium. Of this course is to revitalise this essential public place while preserving its historical significance. The project introduces architectural heritage, urban connectivity, and sustainability by applying contemporary design principles and relevant case studies from other similar historical urban centers around the world. The design strategy i1wolves the careful incorporation of discarded Sinhala Ulu (half-round tiles) and old terracotta floor tiles into the facade and flooring of the pavilion by connecting to the architectural heritage of Galle.
The proposed pavilion will serve as a multifunctional space by encouraging community involvement, promoting eco-friendly living, and aligning pedestrian access to Galle Fort and nearby green open spaces. The introduction of modem technologies such as energy-efficient systems and intelligent design should be provided, while the area is being made open and inviting for the safety and accessibility of its users at all standards. Ultimately, the Galle Heritage Nexus Pavilion aspires to create a most dynamic urban landmark within the area, celebrating the historical essence of Galle by adhering to the demands of contemporary urban life in a harmonious relationship between the past, present, and future of the city
Enhancing phishing detection through machine learning

ABSTRACT
Phishing attacks are currently considered some of the most significant threats among various forms of cyber attacks, particularly in the realm of social engineering. It threatens every person and company in their daily life and business and causes a vast number of financial and sensitive data losses. The traditional way based on the blacklist to prevent phishing is not efficient, and the update of the blacklist database is slower than the appearance of the phishing websites.
Machine learning, a new technology that appeared several years ago, has become an emerging power weapon in many areas. This new technology can be used in cybersecurity to create and train many models for detecting threats and attacks. Machine learning demonstrates greater accuracy and robustness compared to traditional methods, making it more powerful and efficient.
This research uses the random forest (RF), decision tree (DT) and Extreme Gradient Boosting (XG-Boost), three popular machine learning models, to create the classifier for phishing detection. Different feature selection and classification algorithms will be added to the model to enhance the three proposed models. This research aims to find an efficient machine learning model combined with a feature selection algorithm to gain a powerful way to fight against phishing and offer strong protection for individuals and firms when surfing the Internet.
A confusion matrix, accuracy, precision, recall, ROC AUC and Gini will assess the models’ capacity and ensure which feature selection method is more suitable for the proposed machine learning models. A larger dataset is utilized to re-train the selected model, aiming to improve its generalization capability. This thesis will provide certain benefits for phishing detection research and cybersecurity
A heritage transformation: In celebration of Feilding's built character

How could the restoration of Feilding’s town centre, in combination with modern architectural intervention, become an enrichment and celebration of its Edwardian built heritage?
ABSTRACT
Feilding, a provincial heartland small town of New Zealand, boasts a unique character, in no small part attributable to its dominance of remaining heritage buildings. These structures, most of which were built between 1874 and 1910 (the late Victorian and early Edwardian eras), have stood for 150 years. They serve as visual reminders of the area's cultural heritage of that time and the people and industries that played a vital role in the settler establishment and development of the town. However, due to new earthquake-strengthening laws, these buildings now face an uncertain future. It is evident that these existing buildings are sources for even more community enrichment and pride, and that tearing them down and rebuilding anew would tear a hole in the heart of the community. Further, there is a risk of 'demolition by neglect', a term used to describe the gradual deterioration of historical buildings due to lack of maintenance or investment because of the increasingly onerous seismic building regulations. So, how can we preserve the history of small New Zealand towns and prevent this form of destruction?
This research project responds to methods of reviving and preserving Feilding's heritage in combination with modern architectural intervention. It highlights the importance of upholding the Edwardian character of the town centre so that it is preserved and protected. This research proposes a design framework for restoring three prominent buildings in the Feilding town centre. This framework integrates local heritage conservation, new programmes, and intervention design strategies in respectful coordination with the chosen site's architectural heritage and community culture. Promoting restoration and adaptive reuse, this framework not only preserves the historical significance of these buildings but also creates new opportunities for community engagement and economic development, thereby creating a positive design outcome that celebrates and enhances the connection between the people of Feilding and their rich history

Puna Kōrero: Decolonial design and indigenous placemaking in the Wairaka Precinct
INTRODUCTION The current and former campus areas of Te Whare Wānanga o Wairaka (Unitec Institute of Technology) are undergoing massive change because of the Carrington Residential Development, an urban intensification project that will eventually account for tens of thousands of new residents and visitors in this area. Puna (pools, streams) nurture life in and around their flow paths, but they are also vulnerable to the negative consequences of the prevailing urban development paradigm. Many puna traverse our campus, connecting it with other parts of the Albert Eden local board area and beyond. Puna Kōrero is an interdisciplinary design research project providing opportunities for ontological reorientations in the Wairaka precinct of Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland City), such shifts in worldviews hold the potential to improve the quality of relationships between people and this place over time, particularly its wāhi tapu (sacred sites). Te Wai Unuroa o Wairaka (an aquifer-fed freshwater stream) and Te Rangimarie Pā Harakeke (a plantation of flax). Developed over several months, the project brought together staff, students and the local community across three collaborative strands culminating in a public event celebrating Matariki (the Māori new year) through a working bee to care for the whenua (land), a projection-mapped motion design show, the launching of a new puoro ataata (music video) entitled Manaakitia, and the prototyping of a mobile app to share stories of significant sites of the campus inclusive of the marae (Māori meeting house) and its wāhi tapu.

Designing Compliance into Payroll Software Systems: An Investigation into Automated Approaches for Meeting the Requirements of the New Zealand Holidays Act 2003
This study aimed to explore the challenges organisations encounter in maintaining payroll compliance with the New Zealand Holidays Act 2003 and subsequent amendments using automated systems. It focused on identifying software limitations, particularly in managing complex leave calculations and variable work patterns, to provide insights into improving automation and reducing the need for manual adjustments.
This study originally intended to use a mixed-method design, combining quantitative data from questionnaires with qualitative insights from interviews with payroll professionals across New Zealand. However, due to limited interview participants, the interviews now provide supporting insights, offering context to the compliance challenges identified in the quantitative data.
The key findings revealed that while automated payroll systems enhance efficiency, significant manual interventions are still required to meet the complex requirements of the New Zealand Holidays Act. Common challenges include handling variable work patterns and complex leave calculations, highlighting the need for more flexible, customisable payroll software solutions.
The study concludes that current payroll systems, while effective in certain areas, require greater flexibility and customisation to fully comply with the New Zealand Holidays Act. Enhancing collaboration between payroll professionals and software developers, along with regular system updates, is crucial for improving compliance and reducing manual interventions.
The study recommends regular audits, continuous software updates, and enhanced collaboration between payroll professionals and developers to improve compliance. Additionally, investing in training and more flexible, customisable payroll systems will help organisations better manage complex legislative requirements

Food preference and demand in a ramp task in guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus)
Guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus) are popular pets and used as laboratory animals, however, their dietary preferences are under-studied. It is important for guinea pig owners and carers to increase the opportunity for good animal welfare by providing personalized and enriching dietary options. Thus, this study aimed to assess the use of paired-stimulus and multiple-stimulus-without-replacement preference assessments to determine the food preferences of seven male guinea pigs and test the validity of the methods by testing the demand for the most- and least preferred foods as reinforcers for climbing an elevated ramp. Generally, the preference assessments identified the same foods as the most preferred for each guinea pig, but not the least preferred foods. Guinea pigs climbed up to the steepest angle for both most and least preferred foods, but a non-linear least squares regression and demand analysis indicated faster climbing and inelastic demand for most preferred foods compared to slower climbing and elastic demand for least preferred foods. Both preference assessment methods were valid in identifying a preferred food, however, the multiple-stimulus-without-replacement assessment was more efficient to conduct. High-preference foods such as parsley and dandelion are recommended as future training reinforcers for guinea pigs and as foods to consider using as enrichment in captive guinea pig systems to encourage good welfare
