Exploring the Factors Influencing the Adoption of Robotic Technology Among Dairy Farm Owners in Southland, New Zealand
The use of technologies including robotic technologies have emerged as transformative tools, improving traditional farm practices worldwide. Notably, in the dairy industry, some of the major milk-producing countries have embraced robotic technology to address the issue of labour shortages and enhance productivity. However, the adoption of robotic technology remains low among dairy farm owners in Southland, New Zealand where the issue of labour shortages persists. This study aims to explor the factors influencing the adoption of robnotic technology among dairy farm owners in Southland, New Zealand. The objectives of this study are to: assess the knowledge and experience of dairy farm owners with robotic technology; examine the challenges and barriers faced by dairy farm owners when deploying robotic technology; and identify the motivations of dairy farm owners for adopting robotic technology. This research employed a survey design and utilised a questionnaire method to collect data from research participants. Out of the 50 questionnaires distributed, 31 valid responses were obtained. The result of this study revealed that the cost and maintenance associated with robotic technology is the major barrier to adoption among dairy farm owners in Southland, New Zealand. This study also showed the influential role of fellow farmers in motivating dairy farm owners to adopt robotic technology. The findings of this study hold significant implications for the Southland dairy industry. Specific recommendations highlighted in this research can promote the uptake of robotic technology among dairy farm owners in the Southland region of New Zealand
Keep calm and carry on: A survey of medical imaging students on the impact of a COVID-19 lockdown in Aotearoa New Zealand
INTRODUCTION
COVID-19 significantly impacted individuals' daily lives as governments globally took unprecedented measures to reduce the spread of this disease. The restrictions also directly affected medical imaging students , for example, through moving to fully online teaching. This study aimed to explore the impact of the lockdown on a small group of medical imaging students in terms of their overall well-being, academic achievement, and the teaching experience.
METHODS
Students from one undergraduate medical imaging degree programme who were taught during New Zealand’s first “lockdown” in semester 1, 2020 completed an online questionnaire. The students’ academic performance was compared to the previous cohort’s average course completion rate of 4 core courses. Statistical analysis (student’s t-test) was performed using GraphPad PrismTM (Version 6).
RESULTS
21 responses were collected from 37 individuals (57 % response rate). The survey results show that the majority of students self-rated: the institution’s provision of IT (Information technology) support; the online learning experience; their academic performance; quality of sleep as the same or better than before lockdown. There was no significant difference in the average successful course completion rate between the cohorts (p>0.05); however, overall well-being was significantly reduced (p<0.001).
CONCLUSION
The results suggest that the COVID level 4 lockdown had no significant impact on: a) medical imaging students’ self-rating of teaching and learning; b) successful course completion rates. However, overall well-being was negatively impacted. Further investigation should be undertaken to consider the impact of long-term lockdowns on medical imaging and other healthcare students
Sirenophila macquariensis (Teloschistaceae): A new name for the lichen Caloplaca maculata
A new combination for Caloplaca macquariensis C.W. Dodge is made in Sirenophila Søchting, Arup & Frödén, S. macquariensis (C.W. Dodge) Søchting & de Lange. In the process we reduce the Aotearoa / New Zealand Caloplaca maculata D.J. Galloway into synonymy within the new combination, noting the lack of morphological distinctions between that species and S. macquariensis. Very little is known about S. macquariensis, which is known only from the type collected from Macquarie Island; however, we offer an update on the species ecology based on collections and observations of the species on the Chatham Islands – the eastern most extension of the Aotearoa / New Zealand archipelago
Te Rangimārie: Catholic Māori Mission Centre in Christchurch
The first Catholic Māori Mission centre in the South Island was designed by Christchurch-based modernist architect Paul Pascoe. Te Rangimārie opened in Christchurch 1969. It is still in use today, even if it is in need of repair. Little, however, has been documented of the building’s coming into being.
Te Rangimārie was built during an era that was not yet entirely sympathetic to Māori-based projects; thus it raises questions why and how Pascoe was commissioned for this project. It appears unusual that, as a Pākehā (New Zealander of European descent), Pascoe became involved in designing a building for the Māori community. Were there any existing relationships that led to his appointment as architect, and how did the cultural context influence the design of the project?
Literature on Paul Pascoe is sparse. Robyn Ussher’s thesis “The Modern Movement: The Architecture of Paul Pascoe” of 1986 gives insights into Pascoe’s career and his influence on the modernist movement in New Zealand. Her discussion includes Her discussion includes other religious buildings by Pascoe which predate Te Rangimārie. This helps to establish some of the circumstances of the commission, yet it does not delve into information about the building in question.
This paper analyses published works by Pascoe and makes use of archival records held at the Macmillan Brown Library in Christchurch, in order to understand how the relationship between Pascoe and the Māori community of Christchurch came to be. These documents help to evaluate how Pascoe worked collaboratively with Māori to integrate both cultures and create a purpose-made space. Newspaper articles help gain a perspective on the cultural climate in the South Island at the time, demonstrating the necessity for a place like Te Rangimārie. Ways in which this history shaped and directed the design process are examined to appreciate the complex journey to the completed project.

Predicting forex pair movements: Integrating sentiment analysis, technical, and fundamental indicators using machine learning and deep learning models

ABSTRACT
The foreign exchange (forex) market is one of the largest and most liquid financial markets globally, making accurate price prediction crucial for traders, policymakers, and financial institutions. This research focuses on improving forex price prediction by integrating sentiment analysis with technical and fundamental indicators. Historical forex data, economic indicators, and sentiment data extracted from financial news were employed to develop predictive models. The primary models used include Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks, Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), ensemble models combining these approaches, and Transformer models. Large Language Models (LLMs), such as GPT-4 and GEMINI Advanced, were also utilised for sentiment analysis. The performance of these models was evaluated using comprehensive metrics, including Mean Absolute Error, Mean Absolute Percentage Error, Root Mean Square Error, and R-squared. The analysis was conducted on two different time frames: Fourhour and one-day data for forex pairs EUR/USD, NZD/USD, EUR/NZD, and AUD/NZD. Key findings indicate that integrating sentiment analysis improves the predictive accuracy of models, particularly in the Four-hour time frame. The XGBoost model, when combined with technical, fundamental, and sentiment data, achieved the lowest Root Mean Square Error across various currency pairs, outperforming other configurations. In contrast, technical indicators alone delivered the most accurate predictions for the one-day time frame, although combining technical and fundamental indicators also resulted in solid performance. These results highlight the importance of integrating diverse data types, particularly sentiment analysis, for accurate and timely forex price prediction. The findings have important implications for traders, analysts, and policymakers, suggesting that incorporating sentiment analysis into forecasting models can enhance accuracy. Future research should explore further refinements of these models and investigate the integration of additional data sources to continue improving predictive capabilities. i
Embracing attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder through the pīwakawaka: A Māori perspective on education and ADHD
From the ngahere (forests) of Aotearoa New Zealand, a unique Indigenous Māori metaphor emerges. The pīwakawaka (New Zealand Fantail), known for its vivacious and erratic flight patterns, serves as a culturally resonant symbol for understanding attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) from a Māori perspective. This metaphor not only encapsulates the essence of the ADHD experience but also provides a lens through which the Māori can reclaim and contextualise their understanding of this neurodevelopmental disorder in positive ways. Based on my article, Flighty like the pīwakawaka! Personal reflections on mid-life ADHD diagnosis and the beginnings of a framework for conceptualising the condition from a Māori perspective, this blog post explores the metaphor of the pīwakawaka and suggests some metaphor-based strategies to consider in the classroom

ABSTRACT
This paper aims to analyse the methods used in the existing literature on architectural history that introduce the characteristics of Chinese architecture. The investigation sought to address the research question: How might the characteristics of Chinese architecture be methodically classified and systematically organised to encourage creativity and innovation for architecture students? Following a preliminary discussion, three seminal architectural history books formed the core foundation of this study. One significant finding from the review is that no single method of categorisation can comprehensively illustrate the entire history of Chinese architecture. All systems of classification present a process and effort to balance the need for in-depth knowledge and the demand for a holistic overview. The paper proposes an ‘integrated system’ to systematise and present the subject to architecture students as a possible answer to the question posed in this study. This paper hopes to contribute to the current and ongoing local and international debate on the pedagogy of architectural history
