Bridging the_Gap: Using design thinking to move FMCG NPD from incremental to radical innovation
This paper explores three distinct layers of impact within the seafood industry: a transformation in professional practice, a resolved product and implementation plan and a new design-led FMCG framework that can be applied across the FMCG sector.
Within these three layers of impact are five key recommendations:
Transformation in professional practice
Personal and professional reflection and limitations of relying on tacit knowledge alone
A resolved product and implementation plan
Rejecting the established methods of new product development
The value of effective communication across multiple stakeholders of non-linear and iterative design processes
The social and environmental value of seafood serve-over counters within retail

Through personal and professional reflection, I will explore my intertwined relationships with the environment, personal values and a sense of place within fishing communities. These elements of working, class survival and protecting our planet are what drive my conscious and unconscious bias within my design practice. In addition, it is about what my career has meant, not only to me but the wider community in which I operate. Within this, and more critically, are the limitations of relying on tacit knowledge and other traditional development models from FMCG industries, such as stage-gate models. An identified area of weakness in the existing development model is that it is predominantly linear; therefore, a rejection of these established methods is critical for the evolution of novel products and services.
This notion of rejecting the established methods of new product development will be explored through the application of design thinking, and more especially Human-Centred Design (HCD). Further explored will be how design thinking and HCD can be used to facilitate and explore users’ needs and pain points, thereby creating desirability and integrating design thinking into new products. This incorporation of design thinking over traditional methods results in a new development model, one that is able to communicate the value of non-linear and iterative design processes across multiple stakeholders.
This development and application of the new model is explained through multiple sections of this document. The application will be applied to fisheries resource management and value creation within seafood, exploring consumer health, environmental considerations and social connectivity.
The rationale for this approach in relation to focusing on seafood and fisheries is the declining human connection associated with the purchasing of seafood, on a global scale. Seafood counters are facing extinction, unless a radical approach is adopted. I wish to ensure seafood counters become more relevant to providing solutions to shoppers’ everyday problems, whilst understanding and highlighting the notion of value beyond purely financial metrics.
The switching of seafood sales from traditional serve-over counters to single use packaged seafood are noted, and whilst advancements in packaging is explored from the viewpoint of environmental considerations, such as replacing unrecyclable foam trays destined for landfill with packaging made from recycled material, suitable to be recycled, this is still not addressing the root cause of the problem.
Whilst using recyclable packaging is significantly kinder to the planet from a reduced carbon emissions viewpoint, it is not the long-term solution. We must stop the problem in the first place, adopting a new model of environmentally sound reusable packaging with HCD at its core. A paradigm shift is needed through the awareness of the failures and continued destruction of a body of accepted behaviours and patterns embodied in mass packaged fresh foods, and from this destruction a new model emerges

Computer vision holds the capabilities of performing duties by replicating tasks that the human visual system accomplishes. For this reason, computer vision is being employed as a tool to modernise and advance the management of traffic on a global scale. Traffic management remains an issue in many regions of the world, evidenced by barriers such as street obstacles, inefficient road signals, vehicles speeding, traffic congestion, and underdevelopment of freeways. Due to this, computer vision-driven management systems have been developed to combat such problems, demonstrated by their role in travel assistance and navigation, parking management and enforcement, real-time traffic control, and license plate recognition (Buch et al., 2011). Subsequently, this research explores how vehicle detection can be applied to support traffic flow analysis within Hawkes Bay, New Zealand through the use of computer vision approaches. This research assumes a design-based approach, comprised of two iteration-based approaches employed to develop a prototype for vehicle detection utilising an Nvidia Jetson Nano. The approaches are analysed according to accuracy, processing time, cost, and overall suitability. Results show that the prototype has great potential as an alternative approach to current traffic flow analysis. Finally, recommendations are offered for future research and other users working with similar devices
Has NZ’s construction industry’s productivity related GDP contribution increased by the Productivity Commission’s target of 20% by 2020
The construction sector in New Zealand is considered to have a continuing low level of productivity. The industry has been contributing less to the National GDP than construction industries in America, Australia and the United Kingdom. This research aimed to determine via document analysis and survey questionnaires, whether New Zealand’s construction industry might accomplish a 20% increase in GDP contribution (ie 5.4% to 6.48% by 2020) as set by the Productivity Partnership in 2012. Publications suggested the construction industry’s contribution to the National GDP follows the average profit based productivity trend of four large NZX listed construction or construction-related companies. If true, it is forecasted that the target of a 20% increase will not be reached. Since 2017, the four selected NZX listed companies’ productivity has plateaued or decreased. A survey questionnaire undertaken, with selected Auckland based commercial construction-related employees focussed on gauging whether the respondents’ companies placed an emphasis on productivity measures and reporting. The productivity results from the survey questionnaires, evidenced that managerial and human resources are plaguing the construction industry. Conversely, the results showed that management and systems enhancers are the likely factors needed to improve productivity in the construction industry
The performance of ex New Zealand Diploma in Engineering (NZDE) Civil Engineering students in BEngTech programme at Unitec
For BEngTech new student intakes between semester 1, 2014 and semester 1, 2016 at Unitec, the ex NZDE (Civil) comprised about 22% to 32 % of the total intake figures. It is important to find out the performance of this group of students and to see if they are doing well or need some support during their study. Out of the 79 ex NZDE students enrolled, 89% has since completed BEngTech, 8% in the process of completion, and 3% has dropped out. Kāinga Manaaki : how can the Manaaki Tāngata Programme inspire marae based kāinga, to support vulnerable whānau in the pursuit of mana motuhake?
This project aims to explore marae-based housing solutions in Auckland for vulnerable whānau as they seek to pursue mana motuhake. Successive Government policies, which have led to the alienation of Māori from ancestral homelands while facilitating Māori migrations to urban environments, have resulted in the loss of tribal identity and belonging. The emergence of urban marae has been at the forefront of preserving and protecting both cultural and tribal identity in response to colonization. With the increase in homelessness rates, especially among Māori, it becomes imperative that Māori housing initiatives reflect not only the cultural values and social dynamics of Māori whānau but also solutions that restore identity and belonging. Exploring design solutions to these concerns are essential to the pursuit and fulfilment of mana motuhake.
From the winter of 2016 to September 2018, Te Puea Memorial Marae in Māngere Auckland has seen the placement of 320 homeless whānau members into long-term accommodation. Responding to the rise in homelessness, Te Puea Mārae seeks to support vulnerable whānau in their path towards mana motuhake. This ‘grassroots’ initiative is titled the ‘Manaaki Tangata Programme’ based on core marae principles.
Mana motuhake means having a separate identity, self-determination, control over one’s destiny, self-government, autonomy, independence, sovereignty and authority. Vulnerable whānau are unable to ‘determine their destinies’ without the support of exterior influences. Assessing the feasibility of a therapy package application on reducing psychological and physiological stress in women : a pilot study
INTRODUCTION AND AIM:
There is mounting evidence regarding the existing relationship between stress and adverse health outcomes. As stress is multidimensional, the need for a multimodal approach to manage stress is warranted. There is a high incidence of stress among women compared to men, which can be due to various factors including financial, housing, personal health and occupational stress. Despite some literature indicating the positive effect massage therapy has on stress, there is limited research demonstrating the effects general osteopathic therapy has, either with or without stress management education on reducing stress. Therefore, the aim for this project was to conduct a pilot study assessing the feasibility of a therapy package application on reducing stress in women.
METHOD:
This was a pilot uncontrolled trial with mixed pragmatic and exploratory design. The therapy package comprised of ten general osteopathic techniques and ten minutes of scripted stress management education, which was applied in two sessions over two consecutive days. The effects of the therapy package were assessed by measuring pre- and post-intervention scores of self-reported perceived stress (Perceived Stress Scale-10 and Profile of Mood Scale) and salivary levels of physiological biomarkers (cortisol, secretory Immunoglobulin A and Interleukin-6). In addition, feedback from participants and challenges experienced by both participants and the researcher assessed.
RESULTS:
The therapy package was easy to administer to apply to the small sample size in an osteopathic clinical setting. A total of 11 female participants (age = 33.72 years, SD = 12.8) were enrolled, with a 100% retention rate. There were no recorded dropouts and no follow ups. The early morning sessions over two consecutive days were challenging for the majority of the participants. However, all women felt “relaxed” after the therapy package with no reported adverse effects. A significant decrease was observed across all participants in the scores of Perceived Stress Scale-10 over the course of the intervention (p = < 0.03). There were also significant decreases in the subscale scores of the Profile of Mood Scale (Tense, Fatigue, Depression, Anger). Cortisol, interleukin-6 and secretory immunoglobulin-A levels did not show any specific pattern of change over the course of the intervention. Overall there was no clear relationship observed between perceived, psychological stress scores and physiological stress biomarker levels or any clear patterns of change.
CONCLUSIONS:
The application of the therapy package was feasible. The overall decrease in the Perceived Stress Scale-10 scores in the majority of participants suggests that the plausibility of this therapy package (ten selected osteopathic techniques, in combination with stress management education), contributed to reducing perceived stress. However, the effect on physiological stress was not clear, the results need further investigation. Future studies may benefit by employing randomised controlled trial design, with a larger sample size. Additionally, future researchers may need to consider utilising physiological biomarkers without diurnal variation and employing a flexible time for therapy application
Analysis and evaluation of quantum key distribution protocols
Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) which is the name of cryptography in quantum environment act as the highest developed area in quantum communication and computing technology (QCIT).
QKD is inventive technology which utilize the laws of quantum to create a cryptographic share key to make the communication system secure. The unique feature of QKD assures eavesdropping detectable during quantum communications which is fascinating for a high-level secure environment.Most of the traditional cryptographic methods which we use currently are based on mathematical scheme or Computational complexity theory which are not completely safe. Using quantum cryptography has been achieved extensive steps in communication security establishment. As the information Unit has been changed from “bit” to Quantum bit (Qubit), a new element has been offered that can guarantee the shared information confidentiality between parties. The confidentiality of system is established via exchanging a secret key through a channel of quantum, the key which we use for encrypting the shared data. This structure has quantum integration which has been developed by physics law and techniques of cryptography.
This thesis has proposed a modified version of QKD protocol, this new protocol will generate a cryptographic share key for a more efficient, lower cost and secure communication between two parties (sender and Receiver). This new protocol principal is similar to BBM92, but the source of photon moved to sender instead of third-party photon generator, following steps will be executed in this Experiment:
• Observe different categories protocols of QKD in details
• The Quantum Mechanics Visualisation Project (QuVis) is the simulation software that has been used for implementing the proposed protocol [BB84 with spin] among the other three (BBM92, B92 and BB84).
• Probability ratio of error will be tested and compared for all protocols, for this experiment 100 to 5000 photons will be sent.
By Analysing collected data in this experiment, it will be determined which one of this four protocols lead the detecting of eavesdropping. Simulation software accomplishes the value of error key probability which receiver can use and should not pass over the range limit of 0.25 & 0.5

Mobility : a by-product of supply chain integration
Traditional small retail businesses are among the most immobile and inflexible working environments, however, as the need for supply chain integration is increasing these businesses are also reshaping and reforming. This presentation discusses part of the findings of recent qualitative research that explores the implementation of a new integrated enterprise management software to a chain of medium-size retail stores in New Zealand. We interviewed store managers and other employees in the stores as well as trainers and facilitators. We found that the cloud-based nature of the new technologies has led to new-found mobility. Findings indicate that store managers' mobility was improved as a result of improved visibility/tangibility of information across all functions. This allowed better delegation of tasks, while it facilitated making important decisions while away from the store. We also found technical skills learned in the process by the employees enhanced their mobility within the same retail chain and beyond
Time of the great Whakaaro: Research dissemination in difficult times
A year ago we would never have conceived of the challenge and complexities 2020 would bring to our everyday lives. As healthcare professionals we could never have predicted that we would live through the greatest health emergency in 100 years.
To mark this once in a lifetime event, the Healthcare team will be presenting a non-conference conference event, ‘Time of the great Whakaaro’. Contributors have been invited to share their scholarly thinking, reflections, clinical practice experience and research ideas related to the covid-19 lockdown experience. Our intention is to document the experience of being health professionals experiencing events of historical magnitude and to mark for all time what we did, what we thought, what ideas were provoked. Our work will be published in ePress so that generations to come can read our first hand accounts.
Our responses to the emergency are to be explored using the matauranga Māori Te whare tapa wha model of health. Our presentation will show how Taha tinana (physical well-being); Taha whanau (family and social); Taha hinengaro (mental and emotional) and Taha wairua (spirit) provide a way to communicate the extraordinary experiences of our students and staff. We will also show how our proposed event responds to the challenge laid down by Tūāpapa Rangahau to find possibilities and ways disseminate our work despite the restrictions of covid-19
