    Performance comparison of cloud computing/IoT virtualization software, Hyper-v vs Vsphere

    Hyper-V and vSphere are amongst the top virtualization software's available in the market currently. Both of these products are from different vendors, Hyper-V is developed by Microsoft and vSphere is devolved by VMware. The intent of this paper is to compare the network performance of two different software's using IPv4 and IPv6 that will allow us to determine which perform better at different stages of the test. Virtualization is used in Cloud data centers that store most of IoT (Internet of Things) data. Results show VMware (vSphere) is able to achieve much higher throughput that Hyper-V. Also VMWare showed lower delay, but the differences is in milliseconds that is not noticeable

    Te Whāriki (MoE, 2017) emphasises the importance of weaving te reo Māori and tikanga Māori for all children into the everyday curriculum. Research however continues to reflect significant under-use of te reo Māori within the early childhood education sector by teachers. This session aims to support best practice by drawing upon the findings from our Raranga Reo research project and the newly developed He taonga mō ā tātou mokopuna: The teaching and learning guide. Supporting teachers to reflect on their own challenges, this session focusses on having fun, building courage to include te reo Māori naturally in a range of areas of their practice. The aim of this session is to support a shift from the mandatory use of te reo Māori, to practice that is truly authentic recognising te reo Māori as a living and relevant language

    Sowing the seeds of collaborative curiosity : fostering academic research skills in pre-bachelor creative arts students

    Conducting and presenting academic research is an acquired craft. Most students who enter higher education have no previous experience in the research domain, and many spend the first semester (or more) of their bachelor degree grappling with the nature and scope of this new challenge. Much of the course content in students’ first semester is lost in the shuffle of coming to grips with tertiary study itself. To address this, efforts are underway to arm students with fundamental research skills before they begin their degree. In a pre-bachelor certificate programme at Unitec Institute of Technology in Auckland, New Zealand, creative arts students have been given a simple system to learn how to engage in and present academic research. Using a suite of online tools, the students collaborate to develop a team research question, perform the research, and present their findings and conclusions. The research process is demystified for them and they are empowered with new skills and knowledge around how to channel their natural curiosity into an academic framework. Along the way, they also develop presentation skills as well as becoming familiar with using tools for remote collaboration. This paper will discuss the students’ journey through the course and will share insight into the value to students of beginning a bachelor degree pre-armed with basic research skills

    Individual competence requirements for digital technologies in construction management

    Digitalisation is an important change driver in the construction industry. However, most of its potential can be lost as the industry professionals lack the required competences. This paper presents part of a larger research in progress, where the aim is to facilitate construction management professionals’ development regarding the use of digital technologies to respond to the changing competence requirements in construction management created by digitalisation. In the part presented in this paper the research objectives have been to define the core terminology, to define what digital technology means in construction management context, and to identify the current demand for digital technology competences within the construction management discipline. The research as a whole is a multi-method qualitative research relying on the constructivist paradigm. The research design has some exploratory features, but is mostly descriptive. Research methods are a combination of literature reviews, document analyses, interviews and focus groups to inform the different stages of the framework development. In this part of the research state-of-the-art and systematic literature reviews, and document analysis have been used. Concepts of digital technology, construction management and competence have been defined. The nature and type of digital technologies in construction management has been discussed and digital technology related competences have been explored

    Motivations behind reporting on human capital in New Zealand

    PURPOSE: The purpose of this paper is to examines the motivations of companies within the New Zealand banking sector for reporting on Human Capital (HC). DESIGN / METHODOLOGY / APPROACH: The research method included a content analysis of publicly available information communicated by the banks on HC along with 14 interviews of eight banks. FINDINGS: The analysis of the data identified three major motivations. First, the banks used HC reporting to enhance their image by reporting on how employees contribute to the customer experience and the community. Second, the banks use HC reporting to achieve a competitive advantage by differentiating their HC from others. The third motivation is to communicate the kind of talent the banks are looking for as a means of recruiting staff and to acknowledge the contribution and abilities of the existing workforce. RESEARCH LIMITATIONS: Only 8 of the 21 registered banks participated in the study so the findings cannot be generalised to all banks. Further, in the research process data may have been lost through researchers’ bias. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: The framework developed in this study explaining why do banks voluntarily report on HC can be adapted, and applied to future research on HC disclosures. Further, findings from this study provide insights into the motivation for voluntary reporting in banks which could be used by banks to improve the reporting of HC. ORIGINALITY / VALUE: Prior research in New Zealand has focused on the content of the HC disclosures within the scope of intellectual capital rather than the motivations of organisations to report on HC

    New Zealand's unreinforced masonry buildings : facing up to the earthquake.

    The damage caused by the 2011 Christchurch earthquake has led to the introduction of compulsory seismic strengthening legislation for all unreinforced earthquake-prone masonry buildings (URM) within New Zealand. The legislation, passed in 2013, requires all such URM commercial, multi-unit and multi-storey residential buildings to be upgraded and strengthened to a minimum of 34% or more of the New Building Standard, irrespective of the earthquake zone within which they are located. Buildings so designated and in high earthquake zones will have a very limited time bring their buildings into line with these requirements. The proposal particularly affects old URM buildings. Some of these are buildings have a declared heritage value, many do not. Most were built around the turn of the twentieth Century. Together they make up a considerable portion of many small town commercial precincts. The legislation affects all parts of New Zealand, regardless of the particular region’s exposure to earthquake risk. The paper will background the current legislation, compare international legislation and study the financial effects of the legislation, case studying buildings within two distinct seismic zones. The findings suggest that where the cost of the upgrade puts the viability of the building as a rental investment at risk, the owner will most likely adopt demolition is the only feasible outcome. This could have far-reaching implications for the wellbeing of many small towns within New Zealand. An alternative strategy is examined and assesse

    This exegesis documents and accounts for the development of a body text typeface designed by me, a hybrid practitioner. Using a practice-based approach with a focus on auto-ethnography, my research explores my own experiences of hybridity (coexisting cultures of Māori, Chinese, Pākeha) as well as my whānau knowledge focusing on the maternal line and my Grandmother. Our whakapapa, the lifeworld of my maternal Grandmother (whose parents were Māori and Chinese) in rural Pukekohe as well as our marae are key sources of discovery, inspiration and influence in the typographic design process. The resulting design gives ‘voice’ visually to this research, particularly the experiences of Māori Chinese wahine (both my Grandmother and I) in Aotearoa New Zealand

    From the lambency of early civilisation the representation of the ruin has existed as an index of greatness lost. This representation manifest since Babylonian times has existed to open a fantastic world of wakeful dreaming in which the visuality of structure exists outside of time to the viewer. This manifestation of other-world-existed places the recipient within a manifold of fascination, aggrandizement, and enchantment constructing a world where the imagination enters a space of spectacular architectural fancy. This development, encapsulated as architectural capriccio offers a lens of transition from the fanciful to allegories of the sub-optimal. This is exemplified through a construct that traces a visual lineage from Marco Ricci to Gustav Dore. It is within this vector that Smith and Bardebes have explored architectural structure as metaphor - exploring the relationships between structure, ruin, and land within time-based visual arts practices. Employing the tools and processes of previsualization, explorations in the architecture of disaster are located and recounted across the landscapes of industrial Auckland, critically informed by the writings of Paul Virilio, Francois Cusset, Joshua Comaroff and Ker-Shing Ong. The work presented will discuss the current facet of an ongoing dialectic between the corporate and individual existence, while simultaneously agitating for a visual response to an architecture of peril and isolation

    RESEARCH QUESTIONS: ● What barriers to giving and receiving feedback in team situations exist? ● To what extent can information technology-mediated peer feedback processes overcome the barriers and improve the effectiveness of team wellbeing and development? ● How can information technology-mediated peer feedback processes be designed and utilised productively to mitigate extreme team member behaviours, such as social loafing, self-seeking, domination and leaderlessness? ● What is the extent of a commercial market for an advanced information technology app and related support services that responds to the needs identified in the foregoing questions? INTRODUCTION: In today’s fast paced environment organizations move away from a traditional hierarchical structure and incline toward a team-based structure. A recent study indicates team interactions and communications have increased by 50% over the last two decades, which for many companies, means more than three-quarters of an employee’s day (Cross, Rebele, & Grant, 2016). Global trends are also changing the face of teams with the rise of new forms of teams such as Virtual, Cross-functional, Fluid, and Swift starting action teams (STATs). The complexity of the new forms of teams warrant further consideration into the effective management of these teams in order to achieve maximum efficiency. The aim of the research is to improve the effectiveness of feedback giving and receiving within teams to improve both team wellbeing and performance by using information technology-mediated peer feedback processes. The proposed process will be adapted from a process called “peer assess pro” which is currently used in the education sector. There are over 65 educators worldwide who use the Peer Assess Pro tool as part of their Team-Based Learning pedagogy or as a method to determine individual scores from team-based assessments. The current tool provides a platform to explore further, how feedback can be used in work-based teams
