    This study investigated the effects of a high carbohydrate diet, with varied fermentable oligo-, di-, and mono-saccharide and polyol (FODMAP) content, before endurance exercise on gastrointestinal integrity, motility, and symptoms; and subsequent exercise performance. Twelve endurance athletes were provided with a 48 h high carbohydrate (mean ± SD: 12.1 ± 1.8 g kg day−1) diet on two separate occasions, composed of high (54.8 ± 10.5 g day−1) and low FODMAP (3.0 ± 0.2 g day−1) content. Thereafter, participants completed a 2 h steady-state running exercise at 60% of VO˙ 2 max (22.9 ± 1.2 ◦C, 46.4 ± 7.9% RH), followed by a 1 h distance performance test. Pre-exercise and every 20 min during steady-state exercise, 100 mL maltodextrin (10% w/v) solution was consumed. A 150 mL lactulose (20 g) solution was consumed 30 min into the distance performance test to determine orocecal transit time (OCTT) during exercise. Blood was collected pre- and post exercise to determine gastrointestinal integrity biomarkers (i.e., I-FABP, sCD14, and CRP). Breath hydrogen (H2) and gastrointestinal symptoms (GIS) were determined pre-exercise, every 15 min, during and throughout recovery. No differences in gastrointestinal integrity biomarkers, OCTT, or distance completed were observed between trials. Pre-exercise total-GIS (1.3 ± 2.9 vs. 4.3 ± 4.4), gut discomfort (9.9 ± 8.1 vs. 15.8 ± 9.0), and upper-GIS (2.8 ± 2.6 vs. 5.7 ± 4.8) during exercise were less severe on high carbohydrate low FODMAP (HCLFOD) versus high carbohydrate high FODMAP (HC-HFOD) (p < 0.05). Gut discomfort (3.4 ± 4.4 vs. 0.2 ± 0.6) and total-GIS (4.9 ± 6.8 vs. 0.2 ± 0.6) were higher during recovery on HC-LFOD versus HC-HFOD (p < 0.05). The FODMAP content of a 48 h high carbohydrate diet does not impact gastrointestinal integrity or motility in response to endurance exercise. However, a high FODMAP content exacerbates GIS before and during exercise, but this does not impact performance outcomes

    This presentation outlines the challenges of documenting the embodied carbon of residential building services systems, the strengths, weaknesses, and pitfalls. It finds that a possible illusion of precision is underpinned by some very pragmatic decisions in calculating fundamental data and identifies major and minor carbon contributors. It also proposes reporting protocols that will make the information useful to designers who will ultimately be the most influential users of the information.     AI-enhanced bee bio-acoustics with data augmentation and applications in early swarming detection

    This thesis explores the application of advanced data augmentation and machine learning techniques to improve swarming detection through bee bio-acoustics. Traditional methods of beekeeping and their global practices, along with the history and importance of beekeeping in New Zealand, are discussed. The study addresses significant challenges in beekeeping, including environmental factors, pests, diseases, and data imbalance in audio samples. By leveraging Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks, we aim to enhance the detection of piping sounds, which are crucial for monitoring the health of bee colonies. The methodology includes collecting and preprocessing audio data, applying noise reduction, segmenting audio files, extracting features, and creating annotated data frames. Our experiments demonstrate that augmenting the original dataset with generated and denoised piping audio segments significantly improves model performance. The LSTM model's accuracy increased from 67% with the original dataset to 88% with the augmented dataset. Comparative analysis of precision, recall, and F1-scores further validated the effectiveness of our approach. Despite the successes, future work is needed to refine the generated audio samples to more closely resemble original sounds, and to develop more robust GAN architectures. This study's proposed methodology can be broadly applied to any audio dataset with imbalanced classes, offering a versatile solution for enhancing machine learning models in various domains

    The merging of identities: From trade professional to tertiary education professional

    My research aim was to contribute to a deeper understanding of the dynamics involved in a person's transition from trade professional to a tertiary education professional, a tertiary trade tutor (TTT). Furthermore, I aimed to provide insights that could inform the development of an outline of a Level 3 apprenticeship-style induction programme to support that transition from trade professional to TTT. To provide a more comprehensive understanding of the identity transition issue, various sources were used including a review of the available literature, a thematic analysis of semi structured interviews and my thirty-five years' experience of working with TTTs. My thesis identifies several themes including TTTs professional identity, TTTs transition experiences and the support systems required to support the transition from trade professional to TTT. The scope of the thesis focused on a small sample of 10 foundation level TTTs and the study was located within the context of a private training establishment (PTE) in New Zealand. Although there is a scarcity of research on TTTs in a PTE, my research results supported the literature, in that there is insufficient support and expertise in the field of tertiary trade education and with the identity transition of TTTs in New Zealand, Australia and the United Kingdom. My findings also support the suggestion that there is a need for a formal induction into tertiary trades teaching to ensure that the identity transition from trades professional to TTT is more effective. I further recommend that any professional development provided must be designed for TTTs' needs to acknowledge and build on their skills, knowledge, and attributes to support that transition. An insight I gained through this research was that with the right support and mentorship, a trade professional's identity evolves rather than transitions to a tertiary trade professional

ABSTRACT This research proposes the analysis to systematically evaluate and compare ChatGPT API applications operating within two categories: AI chatbots and project management tools. The primary aim is to analyse the generative AI chatbots to assess these applications based on domain-specific criteria, aligning with the intended functionalities of their AI feature using various text mining techniques. The evaluation methodology involves tailored strategies for each category. Text mining techniques are applied for chatbots to assess coherence, relevance, and completeness within the generated text, providing a quantitative basis for comparison. Concurrently, the project management tools undergo text mining analysis with some AI integration feature comparison, including the data utilisation analysis, which they offer to evaluate documentation, summarisation, sentiment analysis, and other types of scores. The chatbots include CopyAI, HuggingFace chatbot, ChatSonic, YouChat and Rytr.me, and project management tools include ClickUp, Notion and Jira as they support the “Write with AI” feature. This research seeks to evaluate GPT-powered applications by leveraging text-mining techniques. It intends to provide insights into the strengths and weaknesses of these applications, aiding users in making informed decisions based on specific requirements within each category

    Education and culture are an inseparable pair that have fascinated many scholars including the primary author of this article to explore. But what does this really look like in the tertiary learning advisor’s role, and the practice of a Māori kuia, kaitiaki of their Marae, who also provides pastoral care to students and staff? This article re-presents the authors’ practice of whole-persons approach to student success, which they delivered at tertiary learning advisors’ conferences in NZ and overseas in 2022. In our practice as a learning advisor and a pastoral care giver at the tertiary institute, we naturally (due to our cultural beliefs and upbringing) perceived of ourselves and students as whole persons. We call our practice “Educational Mindfulness”- acknowledging all participants in education are teachers/students on their life journey of fulfilment – where education is a phase they go through as part of their journey, alongside their homeland with original cultures, and the land they stand on right now - Aotearoa, NZ; as all play a part in their success. The culture of the land kaimahi/tauira are standing on connects their past with their future. This article introduces Māori and ancient Chinese ways of whole-person education and provides readers with examples of mindfulness education in practice, including its transformative impact on students. It is hoped that fellow learning advisors will gain a deeper understanding through the examples which demonstrate what Educational Mindfulness is, and apply this approach to their work as well. It argues that culture is an integral part of education because it is an integral part of identity for educators and students alike, and education is supported by the culture of the land where the education takes place

    Colour design and conservation of Gummer and Ford libraries in Auckland, New Zealand: Guidelines and comparison with notable buildings (1923-28)

    Proceedings of the 15th Congress of the International Colour Association (AIC 2023) Architect William Gummer (1884-1966) was born in Auckland, New Zealand. He left for the United Kingdom in 1908, studying at the Royal Academy of Arts in London, and qualified as an associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects. He notably worked for Sir Edwin Lutyens (and Daniel Burnham of Chicago). Upon his return home he set up the architectural practice “Gummer Ford” in 1923, (with Englishman C.R. Ford, who had travelled as the youngest member of Scott’s Antarctica 1901-04 expedition). The practice produced notable buildings in Auckland, firstly in the Beaux Arts tradition and later in the Modernist idiom. One small treasure is the Remuera Library (opened in 1926), which is clad in red brick cavity construction and some solid plaster rendering to the porticos, along with tall arched steel framed windows that activate the reading spaces. The interiors still retain their timber ceiling beams and panelling, giving a noble atmosphere well suited to the up-market, though conservative, suburb within which it sits. The goal of this research is to reveal the significance of this small architectural gem within the ‘minor’ heritage of New Zealand and to outline a proposal for the conservation of its colours in the near future. This study presents an analysis of the current building colours and a comparison with relevant buildings designed by the same Architectural firm within a similar period, notably: the Grey Lynn Library, (painted brick clad); the Auckland Wintergardens; the Jubilee Institute Building for the Blind Foundation; and the Auckland Railway Station. The research methodology includes a literature review, archival research, as well as on-site study. The latter includes the identification of the aforementioned buildings’ colour palettes of the external façades, by using the NCS Colourpin SE tool. The colour palettes – generated according to the NCS 1950 chart – have been compared with archival material (photos and drawings) to better understand the most appropriate strategy for colour conservation. A comparison with the colour palette of the above latter three (natural brick cladding) buildings provides further insights for conservation strategies. The final colour palettes will be useful to practitioners for future conservation projects of these gems from this period of early New Zealand’s 20th Century architecture. Our results also provide a brief guideline for the colour conservation of the Remuera Library. Original source: Proceddings of the 15th Congress of the International Colour Association 2023.
