The coworking experience: Myth and reality for Canterbury coworkers
A coworking space is like a traditional office where coworkers get to work with other members who are not essentially their colleagues. Coworking space is a growing industry supported by the rising number of self-employed and as an alternative to working from home. There are myths that coworking spaces are the same, it is only for freelancers, entrepreneurs and start-ups, and it is noisy and distracting. This study unveils the realities in coworking spaces. This research shows how coworkers perceive a shared workplace in Canterbury, New Zealand. It explores from an interpretivism perspective the characteristics of a coworking space, and how shared space works or does not work for different types of users. Data collection through observation and semi-structured interviews identified three themes: work environment, characteristics of a coworking space, and benefits and drawbacks of coworking space. A coworking space provides its members, either employed or self employed, a professional place to meet their clients. Location and proximity to homes are found to be the key characteristics that coworkers consider in selecting a shared workplace. The advantages of working in a coworking space include a sense of community, knowledge sharing and low-cost workplace. The potential disadvantages include personal clashes, interruptions, and the capacity of the office space. It is recommended to conduct future studies in other cities and consider the purpose of the shared space, expand the length of data collection and explore coworkers’ productivity. As shown in this study, interpretivism philosophy provides a basis for understanding the coworking space from different perspectives to generate in-depth results
Some brief notes on kai Māori
Food is a signifier of identity and status (Hayden, 1998, 2009; Hayden & Villeneuve, 2011; Neill et al., 2015). In traditional times, Māori consumed a range of hunted, gathered, and cultivated foods (Royal & Kaka-Scott, 2013). As a result of this diet, non-infectious diseases were low among Māori due to foods with higher levels of protective chemicals and nutrients (Cambie & Fergusson, 2003).
Pākehā settlers brought new foods such as wheat and potatoes (see McFarlane, 2007; Wharemate, 2015; Zhu & He, 2020 concerning potatoes specifically), corn, cabbage, and other vegetables (Royal & Kaka-Scott, 2013). Pākehā also introduced sheep, pigs, goats, and poultry (Royal & Kaka-Scott, 2013). These new foods added variation to the Māori diet.
Colonisation and land loss has negatively impacted Māori food sovereignty (Shirley, 2013), and poverty-related food insecurity damages Māori health (Beavis et al., 2018). In addition, due to the consumption of cheaper, processed foods, Māori
experience inexplicably high levels of obesity and associated illnesses, such as type 2 diabetes (Glover et al., 2019; McKerchar et al., 2021).

ABSTRACT
Brown-Baby is a visual compilation of multiple art mediums such as poetry, dance, music, rap, and animation working together to explore the spaces that we inhabit as first generation Sāmoans born in the New Zealand diaspora, specifically in South Auckland. This visual piece is a South Auckland take on the interpretation of space. The space we live and thrive in physically and the space that exists internally mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. It will bring to the forefront the issues of Pacific Island women in New Zealand society and aims to give them a space to speak their truth about their struggles as women of colour, as artists of colour, as queer women of colour, and as bigger bodied women. KATO.NI.MANA (Box of knowlege): Building cyclone resistent rural Fijian communities through social, environmental, and sustainable architectural responses
RESEARCH QUESTION
How can rural Fijian communities create a resilient and sustainable environment?
ABSTRACT
The traditional response to cyclone resilience has generally focused on construction techniques and materials used for building. Notably, from the current literature reviews, resilience is dependent on the effectiveness of structures. However, for a developing Pacific Island country such as Fiji, structures destroyed by cyclones are often replaced with houses with similar limitations due to economic constraints. Therefore, understanding the contextual situation is essential to identify sustainable and resilient architectural solutions, primarily when the architectural identity of Fijian communities reflects its social and cultural fabric.
The initial research question focused on developing cyclone resilient solutions for the rural communities in Fiji in parallel with the earlier precedent reviews and discussions. However, as the research progressed, several other problems were identified that expanded the term "resilience" in this research project to the broader community. Evidently, the analysis of the Fijian social structure in rural communities identified that solutions to resilience could not be limited to structures but could rather be achieved through building a holistic, resilient community. Therefore, the research deepened its investigation to analyse the current rural Fijian communities' social, environmental, and traditional contexts for a holistic architecture response to achieve resilience. One of the earlier issues identified in the research project was the loss of traditional architectural identity in rural Fijian communities.
Therefore, the core of this research project focuses on the traditional village layout of indigenous Fijians to identify sustainable architectural solutions for Fiji's cyclone-prone environment. The research argues that a sustainable disaster response ‒ which we define as the ability to withstand and recover from a disaster ‒ is embedded in traditional village layouts. This research examines several villages to identify building patterns that mainly support resilience to disasters in rural communities and explores the potential of traditional housing patterns in the present day as an alternative to enhance the capacity to cope with natural disasters for communities across the Pacific Island countries.

Catching a breath: Empowering holistic wellbeing within a suburban community
RESEARCH QUESTION:
How can a communal hub provide for the physical, mental and spiritual needs of a suburban community?
ABSTRACT:
Currently, many suburban communities are overwhelmed by the effects of rapid population growth and major urban redevelopments. The typical approach to major redevelopments has been to radically wipe down the existing townscape and start over with a blank canvas. In large urban development projects, communities are often left in a traumatic state that leads to a decline of the community’s sense of wellbeing.
CATCHING A BREATH project seeks to provide aid for the facilities within a suburban community that are about to undergo significant urban developments. The project challenges the proposed Panuku Development within the Northcote Shopping Center by looking into a series of interventions within the existing community center that will not only create stronger connections from the current and the new but also provide exciting ways for the people within the community to interact with one another. Furthermore, this project will investigate how to preserve and honour the original essence of the Northcote Shopping Center by retaining and enhancing the existing facilities to accommodate for the anticipated suburban growth.
The primary aim of this project is to provide the needs of a suburban community - such as public facilities - through a series of architectural interventions while also contributing to the improvement of the community’s holistic wellbeing. Thus this project asks: how architecture can contribute to improving people’s holistic wellbeing within the community.

How can architectural design enhance healing processes for cancer patients in South Korea?
ABSTRACT
Many hospital experiences are unpleasant. A hospital is considered a place where people go only when they experience a disease, disorder or crisis, and spending time in the hospital is not something to look forward to. Research reveals that an unpleasant environment can cause people to feel anxious or helpless, affecting the immune system. A pleasant environment can reverse that. Regardless of age and culture, the connection between people and nature leads to positive impacts on people’s physical and mental wellbeing. Contact with nature, even viewing scenes of nature, can reduce stress and pain and increase pleasant feelings. Due to modernisation, people spend most of their time in the built environment and architecture plays an important role in improving the occupant’s health and wellbeing. In particular, architecture can contribute to positive outcomes in healing and overall wellbeing in the healthcare setting.
Cancer is one of the leading causes of death globally and is the top cause of death in South Korea. During the Covid pandemic, the healthcare system and medical technologies in South Korea have proven to be of a high standard, but despite this, the death rate from cancer continues to grow. In order to improve the healing environment, the architect and designer have a vital responsibility to create spaces that encourage the healing process and enhance the quality of life. A number of research studies show that a connection to nature has positive impacts on people’s lives, and healing is one of them. Rapid development and modernisation in South Korea over the past years has resulted in a lack of consideration of connecting to nature, especially in healthcare. In this study, firstly, a literature review and precedent study will be conducted to explore the notion of holistic design, incorporating Biophilic and Salutogenic designs and their impact on healing. Secondly, holistic elements will be considered from the literature review and the precedent study, to address the aspects applicable to the healthcare system in South Korea.
