    RESEARCH QUESTION: How can adaptive reuse of post-earthquake Christchurch buildings regenerate the sense of place between a disengaged community and its city? ABSTRACT There has been an apparent disengagement between the people of Christchurch and their central city, which was severely impacted by the 2011 earthquakes. Many initiatives have been founded, such as Regenerate Christchurch, to work with the community and local businesses to drive social regeneration to get more happening and make it a place for the people again. Unfortunately, buildings that were deemed irreparable were senselessly demolished. The mass destruction of cultural and heritage significant buildings and clearing of sites around the central city has adversely impacted the community’s vitality due to the disconnection between the people of Christchurch with the inner urban area caused by the earthquakes. With the current global concerns of climate change combined with the need for community revitalisation post-natural disasters, adaptive reuse presents itself as a viable architectural solution to investigate. This research will explore the concept of place and provide a set of heritage strategies and urban design principles to be used as a design framework to answer the question, how can adaptive reuse of post-earthquake Christchurch buildings regenerate the sense of place between a disengaged community and its city? The senseless annihilation of existing structures is not only ecologically wasteful but is also a destruction of local identity, socio-economic, and cultural heritage values. The retention and adaptation of remaining earthquake damaged structures may provide a more financially viable and environmentally sustainable approach instead of new development. This research explores the intangible value added through adaptive reuse to host the proposed mixed-use community precinct to analyse and assess its significance as a strategy for urban regeneration. This research proposes a framework that clarifies the processes of re-programming an unused heritage building in Christchurch post-earthquake into a collaborative precinct for creative industries through a designbased approach. This framework consists in integrating strategies dealing with the conservation, program, and urban design and coordinating them with meaningful aspects of the chosen site to demonstrate the benefits of adaptive reuse and its potential ability to repair the lost connection between the people of Christchurch and their city.     Gannets, like many seabirds are top predators in marine ecosystems. Persistence of seabirds in marine ecosystems is dependent, in part, sufficient energy in the form of food being available to these animals. This flow of energy or carbon, is funnelled through biological communities are described by food webs which highlight important feeding interactions within and between different levels of these food webs. A range of natural (El Nino) and anthropogenic (climate change, pollution, overfishing) factors may change the abundance or distribution of component elements of these food webs including the potential prey to seabirds. Accordingly, we expect these changes to ripple through to seabirds and be detected by changes in a range of in various measurable biological parameters of seabirds over time.     Plastic minimisation in construction: A pilot study identifying and quantifying the composition of C&D plastic in construction waste

    Construction and demolition (C&D) waste contributes at least 10,000 tonnes of plastic to landfills in Auckland annually. The growing use of plastic in the packaging of building materials, the use of polystyrene and products such as building wrap are contributing to this landfill stream. Most construction waste is not sorted on construction sites, with C&D waste often being co-mingled. This funded research is an exploratory study being undertaken as a pilot project over 12-18 months by academics with three industry partners (a commercial construction company (Naylor Love), a leading building materials’ supplier (Mitre 10), and a large recycling company (Green Gorilla), to undertake a comprehensive waste audit analysis of plastic waste, and workplace incentivisation for source separation of waste. The research grant was awarded to Unitec Institute of Technology by the Auckland City Council in December 2019. To date, the research team (principal investigator assisted by another senior researcher and two research assistants, a plastics technician, and an industrial chemist), has audited and recently analysed the first of two rounds of the plastics’ recycling bags that were located at three of the construction company’s project sites. Mitre 10 and Green Gorilla are providing the research project with statistical data related to the products being supplied and recycled to and from the three project sites. The main aim of the collaborative pilot research project was to investigate how to identify and quantify the composition of C&D plastic in construction waste going to landfill. As the pilot research project concludes later in 2021, the results to date are preliminary, yet positive. The findings demonstrate the value-added results of this collaborative academic and industry partnership, and the commitment to making a real difference that Naylor Love, and Mitre10 in particular have achieved, for minimising plastic and plastic wastes on their projects, and influencing clients customers and other players in the construction industry

    Every minute is precious

    This project proceeded under the conceptual frames of materiality and the everyday, alongside a methodology I called the project as process. While projects are intended to create change, processes are designed to resist change, so the two operate in unison but with different agendas. A set of rule-bound actions and procedures (the process) can be allowed to proceed potentially indefinitely, all the while generating ideas and observations that can inform the project and move it towards completion. The process governed the production of wheel-thrown ceramic bowls. My plan was to decide on a "perfect" bowl, then repeat it potentially hundreds of times. As the project progressed it was clear there were several avenues of investigation to explore. I have called the project in its entirety Every Minute is Precious - a name co-opted from a piece of writing exchanged for bowls and which encapsulates the contemporary dilemma of wanting to make the most of time but always being anxious that we are too busy to get everything we want done. However, the central project that emerged from the methodology was The Exchange. Each bowl took an hour to make, glaze and document, and I exchanged it for an hour of someone's time. This hour could be measured in several ways, from the participant's hourly pay rate to goods or services for me or someone else that we agreed. Through The Exchange, and the process of negotiating and agreeing the 65 exchanges undertaken, social and cultural values were elicited, economic considerations were central to the process, and political values emerged from the consideration of time
