What counts as knowing
In educational research, and in teaching, we often privilege students’ verbalisations and written artifacts as demonstrations of their knowing. Increasingly, however, research in a variety of fields, including cognitive science, neurophysiology and education, shows how the body and body movement are enmeshed in students’ thinking and knowing. From Ingold’s post-humanist perspective, thinking and movement are inseparable in animate human bodies. Movement, from this viewpoint, is not a support for, or an expression of, thinking, rather human bodies spontaneously think in movement. My research investigates how a small group of tertiary students use body movement as they engage with a mathematical problem task. Using a thick descriptive analysis, my research illustrates how students think mathematically in movement. These findings suggest educators may need to reevaluate what they consider as students’ thinking and knowing. Marae ora, kāinga ora: A marae-led response to Covid-19
Marae Ora, Kāinga Ora (MOKO) is a marae-led community development and wellbeing research project. Lee-Morgan et al. (2021) explain this three-year research project, stating: “MOKO investigates the potential of five marae to strengthen their provision of kāinga (village, settlement) in the contemporary urban context of South Auckland” (p. 2). Using a Kaupapa Māori (KM) approach to Community Based Participatory Research (CBPR), this project explores the ancient Indigenous innovation of marae (both a spiritual and physical location with a socio-cultural setting for Māori to be immersed in a cultural context) and kāinga to understand and co-create new culturally based initiatives and support the activation of community development and wellbeing initiatives.
While marae are highly valued by Māori communities as being critical to cultural sustainability and are recognised by government agencies as important community providers, there is a dearth of research about how contemporary urban marae operate and how they can work with, and for, communities (Kawharu, 2014; Tapsell, 2002; Thornley et al., 2015). The MOKO research aim is to enable marae to explore their potential role within their communities, to develop their own interpretation and opportunities for kāinga. These insights influence opportunities to partner with external agencies and services to achieve greater outcomes and collaborative advantages for whānau (family group) and community wellbeing, alongside marae. In brief, the MOKO project is focused on the intergenerational sustainability of the knowledge systems and replenishment of resources inherent within marae, our natural environment and kāinga ora.
Enabling marae, communities and stakeholders to be an active part of developing the solutions and coproduction of new knowledge and dissemination activities is a key part of this Kaupapa Māori research project and seen as critical if the research is to have maximum impact. Community participation is a prerequisite to understanding and enhancing community wellbeing and kāinga. In the MOKO project, the Marae Research Co-ordinators (nominated by the marae themselves) are pivotal members of the MOKO research team, and have become a strength and feature of the project. When Covid-19 hit Aotearoa New Zealand, forcing a national lockdown in March 2020, the MOKO research was already halfway through the environmental scanning phase of, and with, the five marae and their surrounding communities of South Auckland. During the lockdown, the research tasks of the Marae Research Co-ordinators (MRC) to engage whānau and identify their aspirations would prove to be challenging; however, they were ideally positioned to observe the approaches of each marae in responding to their local communities.
This article will share insights to the resilience of the five marae throughout the adversity of Covid-19, showcasing the diversity of support provided to whānau in meeting the needs of their distinct communities, further demonstrating the adaptability of marae and some of the sustainable solutions in enhancing the wellbeing of marae and kāinga

This study examined the relationships between physical fitness attributes and match demands in lead rugby union referees. Eleven referees underwent anthropometric and fitness assessments (40-m sprint, Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Test, 1.2-km shuttle run) prior to the 2019 Rugby World Cup. Match activities were assessed via global positioning system devices (total distance, high-speed running distance [>5 m·s-1], average speed, and peak intensities over 1-min, 5-min, and 10-min epochs) and heart rate variables were measured using chest-worn monitors (HRmean, summated-heart-rate-zones, time above 90% HRmax). 40-m sprint time was significantly related to maximum speed (P=0.004; r= -0.79) and high-speed running distance (P=0.037, r= -0.63) during matches. Likewise, ∑7 skinfold thickness was significantly correlated with high-speed running distance (P=0.01, r= -0.72). Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Test, 1.2-km shuttle run test, age, and body mass index exhibited non-significant correlations (P>0.05, r= -0.58 to 0.53) with match demand variables. Results suggest it may be pertinent for referees to optimise sprint capacity and body fat composition to execute greater high-speed running volumes and reach higher peak speeds during matches. Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Test and 1.2-km shuttle run tests are not correlated to specific match activity variables, and thus may not be relevant for monitoring of rugby union referees
Assessment of grease traps used in the small-scale food Industry: a pilot study
Fat, oil and grease (FOG) deposits in sewer systems are becoming a serious environmental concern for infrastructure engineers and council managers. These deposits can come from both domestic and commercial wastewater. Water and wastewater company Watercare has reported that 70% of sewer blockages in Auckland, New Zealand, are due to material such as rags, wet wipes, wood, tissues, hygiene products, etc., that shouldn’t go down the sewer drain. These materials can lead to the blockage of pipes when combined with FOG. This preliminary study was about assessing the grease traps (GTs) that are being used in the small-scale food industry in Auckland. The purpose of this study was to address four key questions: How are FOG deposits actually formed? What types and sizes of GTs are being used? Do the sizes that are used comply with the recommended sizes? What are the issues and/or what is missing in terms of the operation and maintenance of GTs? A questionnaire was prepared to collect data such as type of food service, type of GTs used and their sizes, type of fixtures that are used in the small-scale commercial kitchen area, etc. This study shows that there are some issues with the way the GTs are being operated, maintained and monitored (i.e., some regulatory gaps). The paper also gives a brief overview of different types of GTs, reviews the current compliance practice, and then provides some recommendations and solutions that could lead to improved practice to mitigate wastewater pipe blockage
What is known about the rehabilitation management of functional neurological disorder in the adult physical hospital setting: A scoping review.
Background:
Functional Neurological Disorder (FND), historically known as Conversion Disorder, is a condition that lies at the intersection of physical health, mental health, and neurology as the symptoms of this condition affect the body, but the underlying cause is non-organic in nature. The reconceptualisation of FND from being considered a purely psychiatric disorder has led to a period of evolution in the way this disorder is managed within the hospital setting in recent years.
Objective:
This scoping review examined the research surrounding the hospital-based management of FND after the diagnosis had been made. The aim was to explore the body of evidence surrounding this topic and draw on the many disciplines that make up the team working with this cohort of people within the hospital setting.
Methodology:
Guided by the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Manual for Evidence Synthesis and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews extension for Scoping Reviews (PRIMSA-ScR) a thorough search of the literature was completed and ultimately selected 16 articles for inclusion in this review.
Findings:
A descriptive summary of the literature was made using a charting table, detailing the included studies characteristics, from which four themes were identified and explored: Positive communication; Charting the person’s journey; Creating an enabling environment, and Promoting recovery.
Conclusion:
Findings from the review pointed towards the importance of having a cohesive and unified vision for the in-patient team working with a person with FND, with positive communication being identified as a key element. Areas of further research have been identified including the need to have a greater understanding of the person with FND’s journey in the hospital setting, as perception is a key element of the FND experience
The Jesus of K Road: Theological reflections on Māori and homelessness
This paper reflects on my observations of, and casual discussions with, Māori experiencing homelessness, specifically, during the current lockdown in Auckland which began on 17 August 2021. It is important for those who experience homelessness to have their voices heard. Amplifying these voices could increase understanding of the very complex issues that are faced.
This paper begins with a poem entitled The Jesus of K Road — a piece that expresses, through a theological lens, my observations of Māori experiencing homelessness. The Jesus of K Road is a composite of the many characters I have had the privilege of meeting and speaking with. Nixon (2016) maintains that the homeless are God’s storytellers, and this has certainly been my experience
Identifying motivational factors to increase the selection of a career in the engineering profession
The shortage of skilled workers, specifically engineers, in New Zealand is well published (Freeman-Greene, 2020). To recruit the best talent into engineering careers and address the increasing shortfall of highly skilled workers across the industry, my enquiry explores the influences, needs and motivators specific or unique to engineering careers. Identification of these factors in career selection, aims to increase workforce capability and develop engineering as a sustainable vocation.
Through my constructivist grounded theory (Charmaz, 2014) enquiry, I seek to discover what specifically influences subsequent career decisions, and consider what prior learning experiences may provoke that initial interest in engineering careers. Additionally, I have uncovered the motivations necessary for engineering to be considered as an enduring career choice. I delve into the cause-and-effect relationship that supports the development of relatable learning experiences from the cultivation of formative interests. These learning experiences are critical in career decision making and the core category of my analysis.
The framework I have developed is supported by applied psychological motivation theories, particularly social cognitive career theory (Lent et al., 2002). This process enables the evaluation of specific and unique influences and motivations, supporting consequent behaviours and career decisions. Career potential, hobbies, interests, and previous experiential learning are examples of causal factors that can enhance this motivational effect leading to a career selection. Further details of these exclusive parameters as they relate to engineering careers are provided.
The requisite pathway to reach the start line of a professional engineering career at university, is precarious. The contemporary educational philosophy has a profound impact upon engineering careers. It systematically prioritises the advancement of our elite talent into further academic development (Lum, 2009). As I have experienced, and for the majority, the opportunity to reach the start line will only happen once in a lifetime. These conditions and others emphasise the critical intersection that occurs when determining to pursue either an academic or vocational engineering pathway.
Built upon an individual’s learning experiences, a comprehensive model outlining contemporary engineering career management is established. This model considers the individuals, unique set of circumstances that leads to and maintains an engineering career. The cultural, cognitive, and contextual influences of social cognitive career theory (Lent et al., 2002) are a central feature. Further context is provided charting progress through associated professional and educational levels.
