An age of transition: ceramic innovations and social changes in the Mirabello gulf during the Middle Minoan period
This paper offers new insights into the social changes that took place in the Mirabello Gulf in eastern Crete during the Middle Minoan (MM) period (ca. 1900-1700 BC). The most significant change appears to have been the transformation of society from localised chiefdoms to decentralised states for the first time in Greek prehistory, and the archaeological finds from the Mirabello area demonstrate that change. Specifically, the newly examined ceramic material from the site of Mochlos furthers our understanding of this transformation, and is discussed here alongside two other factors that also contributed to the development of states: the population increase and the introduction of the potters’ wheel. The production, distribution and consumption of ceramic material in the Mirabello Gulf demonstrates cultural, economic, and social bonds between sites within the region. The introduction of new standardised ceramic shapes, either local or imported, depicts the common production and consumption habits of a unified socio-cultural regional landscape. Considering the new evidence from the perspective of transitions, this paper discusses the transformation in production technology, as well as in decorative schemata in drinking and storage wares like cups and jars from Mochlos as they relate to other changes taking place in the Mirabello region during this period. It also gives a glimpse of how this transition affected the cultural and economic life of the settlement, such as the intensification of local pottery production, and its relation to the centre’s trends, and offers insight about how a primary material can enrich the present model of a new state level society

Earthenware in private worship. Examples from Serdica: Керамични съдове в частната култова практика: примери от Сердика
The paper presents 10 clay censers and thymiateria found in Serdica, present-day Sofia, Bulgaria, during archaeological excavations 2010-2012. All items were found in private houses which presumes their use in domestic cult rituals. According to their formal features the incense burners belong to two main types: burners with pierced walls on a flat base and ribbed conical bowls on a hollow pedestal. The clay thymiateria have different forms: with cylindrical shaft, with prismatic shaft and in the shape of a pine-cone. From chronological point of view the finds cover the entire period from the late 1st c. AD to the middle of the 3rd c. AD. Together with other items of religious practices (terracotta figurines, votive plates etc.) found in the excavated buildings they provide an opportunity to cast some light on the private cult activities and to suggest a probable location of the domestic worship places. In addition, the finds in question are good examples for the continuity of the tradition to use specific pottery items in private cult practices
Ножче със сребърен обков от Плиска: Knife with silver casing from Pliska
This report presents a luxury knife with silver. It was found in 2014 during the archaeological campaign in ‘Palace centre – east’ in the inner town of Pliska. The casing has been decorated with various motifs. A major component of this decoration is the image of a lion. The casing is made of silver sheet and the surface of the side depicting the lion is gilded. According to its stratigraphic position the knife derives from the ‘Byzantine’ period of Pliska and its latest date of use is around 1030-40s. The decorative motifs and especially the lion figure put the knife in the cultural context of the Byzantine metal artwork
Надписи от Кабиле. Нови прочити и тълкувания: Inscriptions from Cabyle: New readings and interpretations
The article proposes revised reading of several inscriptions from Cabyle. Two Hellenistic fragments are shown to belong to a decree honouring Kriton, son of Euma[chos] or Euma[res], who was put in charge of the city or the neighbouring territories and provided many great services to the citizens. Two alleged mentions of Celts (Γαλά[ται]) in Hellenistic fragments are proved to be misreading. In two inscriptions of AD 135-136, the nomen of the provincial governor ---rius Fronto is reconstructed as Cavarius. A consular date corresponding to AD 208 is restored in an inscription for the construction of a temple for Jupiter Optimus Maximus Dolichenus, which provides a date for the governor of Thrace Q. Egnatius Proculus. Several inscriptions are shown to mention military officers – a prefect, a centurion, and a duplicarius. A fragment erroneously thought to belong to a funerary monument is now read as a dedication to Phoebus and is identified as a fragment from a statue of the god. A Greek inscription, which was only partially read and incorrectly dated to the first half of the third century, in fact belongs to the period of the First Tetrarchy and documents the building of the fortifications of Cabyle under the governor Domitius Domninus in AD 297. Another inscription, from the time of the Fourth Tetrarchy (AD 309-310), is about the construction of a gynaeceum (state textile workshop), being the only such inscription hitherto found on the territory of the Roman Empire. The two tetrarchic inscriptions also reveal the new status of Cabyle in that period – previously a military camp (castra), it was raised to a city, with the title “the splendid city of Cabyle” (ἡ λαμπρὰ Καβυληνῶν πόλις). The main magistrate of the new city was the λογιστής (= curator civitatis), and the first members of the city’s curia were called δεκάπρωτοι (as a translation of the Latin decemprimi)

The current issue of Be-JA brings the readers back to the already established practice of publishing proceedings of scientific fora (see vol. 4, issue 2, 2014).
It includes articles that are based on presentations from the 22nd EEA meeting at Vilnius, Lithuania (31.08–04.09.2016) that were presented in the session “Lithic raw materials in prehistory: sourcing, network distribution and use”, organized by Clive Bonsall (University of Edinburgh), Maria Gurova (NAIM-BAS, Sofia) and Pierre Allard (CNRS, Paris).
Lithic raw materials had an important role in the economic, social and ideological aspects of prehistoric lifeways. The session attracted contributors from Europe and the USA addressing three key themes: raw material sourcing and procurement in prehistory; distribution networks; factors governing the choice of raw materials for specific tasks. The research questions of this session are among the most discussed and intensively studied problems in prehistory that have attracted wide interest from the EAA membership. The paper and poster presentations were accompanied by lively and stimulating discussions. Some of the participants have agreed to publish their papers in a special issue of our journal. The latter has been prepared for publication by the three session co-organizers – Clive Bonsall, Maria Gurova and Pierre Allard, and by Be-JA language editor Bisserka Gaydarska.
