Supporting rotational grazing systems with virtual fencing: paddock transitions, beef heifer performance, and stress response

    No full text
Animal welfare is integral to sustainable livestock production, and pasture access for cattle is known to enhance welfare. Despite positive welfare impacts, high labour requirements hinder the adoption of sustainable grazing practices such as rotational stocking management. Virtual fencing (VF) is an innovative technology for simplified, less laborious grazing management and remote animal monitoring, potentially facilitating the expansion of sustainable livestock production. VF uses Global Navigation Satellite System technology, wireless communication, and stimuli (auditory and electrical) to manage livestock movements and contain animals without physical barriers. Training animals to associate the auditory cue with the subsequent aversive stimulus enables effective livestock containment without physical barriers. While previous studies have largely dispelled concerns about adverse effects on cattle behaviour associated with the use of VF collars, there is limited knowledge regarding the impacts on animal physiology, particularly in rotational stocking systems. Addressing this knowledge gap, this study investigated differences in diet digestibility, livestock performance, and stress response of beef heifers on pastures using a VF compared to a physical electric fence. The study was conducted over 8 weeks, subdivided into two grazing cycles, with 32 heifers in four groups. Each experimental pasture was subdivided into four paddocks. The study monitored the interaction with the VF by analysing the temporal development of the ratio of auditory and electrical cues (success ratio and confidence ratio) emitted by the collars. Additionally, the grassland herbage quality, BW gain, and concentrations of faecal cortisol metabolites (FCMs) were assessed, as well as the time required for animals to cross into a new paddock. VF success ratios increased in the second grazing cycle, reflecting enhanced adaptation over time. Similarly, the reduction in time taken to cross into new paddocks in the VF groups indicated that animals learned to interact with the VF and rely on the auditory cues for directing movements. The absence of a significant effect of the fencing system on FCMs suggested that stress was unrelated to the VF technology. Further, animal performance was not affected as indicated by similar BW gains under both fencing systems. This study also attempts to establish a benchmark threshold for successful responses to the auditory cues, allowing comparative evaluation of VF systems. Overall, under rotational grazing, VF did not adversely impact animal welfare or performance compared to physical fencing, opening avenues for further exploration of VF technology in diverse grazing conditions

Domestic dogs as a comparative model for social neuroscience: Advances and challenges

    No full text
Dogs and humans have lived together for thousands of years and share many analogous socio-cognitive skills. Dog neuroimaging now provides insight into the neural bases of these shared social abilities. Here, we summarize key findings from dog fMRI identifying neocortical brain areas implicated in visual social cognition, such as face, body, and emotion perception, as well as action observation in dogs. These findings provide converging evidence that the temporal cortex plays a significant role in visual social cognition in dogs. We further briefly review investigations into the neural base of the dog-human relationship, mainly involving limbic brain regions. We then discuss current challenges in the field, such as statistical power and lack of common template spaces, and how to overcome them. Finally, we argue that the foundation has now been built to investigate and compare the neural bases of more complex socio-cognitive phenomena shared by dogs and humans. This will strengthen and expand the role of the domestic dog as a powerful comparative model species and provide novel insights into the evolutionary roots of social cognition

A citizen science report-Tiger mosquitoes (Aedes albopictus) in allotment gardens in Graz, Styria, Austria

    No full text
Aedes albopictus, the Asian tiger mosquito, is an invasive species not native to Europe. Due to its ability to transmit pathogens, such as dengue, chikungunya and Zika viruses, Ae. albopictus is considered a major health threat. In Austria, it was first reported in 2012 in the Western province of Tyrol and was documented in the metropolitan area of Vienna in 2020, demonstrating its ability to colonize urban areas. In July 2021, a garden owner from Graz, Styria, Austria, contacted experts because of the possible presence of tiger mosquitoes in an allotment garden complex. Accordingly, citizen scientists collected adult mosquitoes and set up ovitraps. Adults and eggs were sent to the laboratory for morphological examination and molecular DNA barcoding within the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene. In total, 217 eggs of Ae. albopictus were found at the allotment garden as well as at a second location in the city of Graz. In addition, 14 adult Ae. albopictus specimens, of which 7 were molecularly identified as an identical haplotype, were collected at the allotment garden. With its mild climate and numerous parks and gardens, Graz provides the perfect environment for reproduction of tropical/subtropical alien Aedes mosquitoes. The presence of eggs and adult specimens in the current study period indicates that Ae. albopictus is already breeding in Graz. However, monitoring efforts need to be continued to determine whether stable populations of Ae. albopictus can survive there

For this purpose, access to the external jugular vein and the common carotid artery was first planned and practiced on two previously frozen horse heads. The same technique was then used on a freshly euthanized horse. Afterwards the horse\u27s head was perfused with heparin and the head was separated from the horse\u27s body. The head was first perfused with formalin and then immersed in it. Three-dimensional image data of the horse\u27s head was then obtained using several imaging methods at three different institutions. CT scans, MRI scans and a μCT scan were performed. These scans were registered and merged using the 3D reconstruction program Amira. A 3D model of the osseous structures of the horse\u27s head was then created using semi-automatic segmentation. This was further processed manually and then converted from a voxel model into a surface model. This model contains the viscerocranium and neurocranium, the mandible, 37 teeth, all bones of the hyoid, the atlas and the cranial part of the axis. An expansion of the 3D model to include muscles, cartilage, vessels, nerves, etc. is planned. In the future, this 3D model can be used both for anatomical teaching and for simulating clinical procedures. It is also possible to use the 3D model for research. For example, to research biomechanical changes in the chewing cycle when teeth are misaligned

Retrospektive Analyse eines BVD (Bovine Virusdiarrhoe) - Ausbruches in Südtirol und dessen Konsequenzen für die Tierseuchenbekämpfung

    No full text
Since October 1999, there has been a mandatory control program against Bovine Viral Diarrhea (BVD) in cattle in South Tyrol (Italy). As part of this control program, blood samples from all cattle aged between three and 24 months were taken annually until 2005 to detect the Bovine Viral Diarrhea Virus (BVDV). Since April 1, 2005, ear tissue samples taken during animal identification have been examined. To ensure that individual samples are not contaminated, the TypiFixTM system (Agrobiogen GmbH, Hilgertshausen, Germany) was initially used. Since October 2019, FlexoPlusGenoTM (Caisley International GmbH, Bocholt, Germany) has been used. All collected samples are tested for BVDV by PCR in the serology laboratory of the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale delle Venezie. To determine if the animals are persistently infected, blood is taken again from calves that were not slaughtered or sold four weeks after a positive result. Young animals that came into contact with persistently infected animals on farms or alpine pastures are also serologically examined as part of the program. The control program reduced the BVDV prevalence from 0.57% in 2005/06 to 0.02% in 2022. However, between April 2022 and March 2023, the prevalence increased again to 0.09%. This increase was retrospectively examined in detail as part of this diploma thesis. The significance of this increase was confirmed using a two-tailed t-test. The first cases of BVD in 2022/23 occurred in the district of Mölten. Within a few days, positive cases were also reported in the neighbouring areas of Vöran and Jenesien. In total, there were 57 positive ear tissue samples from 21 different farms. The cause of this outbreak can only be speculated. However, it is likely that the shared pasturing with animals from other provinces of Italy, which have a high BVDV prevalence and less restrictive control programs, increased the risk of virus transmission and triggered the observed increase in BVDV positive calves in the autonomous province of Bolzano. In the future, such an outbreak could only be prevented by stricter laws regulating the shared pasturing of cattle from different provinces. The aim of this study was to test several targeted selective treatment parameters on dairy goat herds in Austria to provide practical and sustainable control strategies against parasites for grazing goats. Between September 2023 and December 2023, 584 goats from 21 farms in Austria were examined and included in this study. The parameters live weight, FAMACHA© (FAffa MAlan CHArt) score, body condition score (BCS) and fecal soiling (dag score) were recorded on each farm and rectal fecal samples were collected. The fecal samples were examined using the mini-FLOTAC technique and the number of eggs per gram of feces (EpG) was determined. Afterwards, the correlations between the clinical parameters and EpG were analyzed. A weak, significant negative correlations were found between egg excretion and live weight (r = - 0,167; p < 0,001) and between egg excretion and BCS (r = - 0,154; p < 0,001). A very weak, non-significant positive correlation was found between egg excretion and FAMACHA© score (r = 0,062; p = 0,136). Contrary to expectations, the dag score showed a very weak, non-significant negative correlation with egg excretion (r = - 0,030; p = 0,474). In addition, the examined parameters were theoretically tested for their reliability in identifying animals that required treatment. A combination of FAMACHA© score ≥ 3 and BCS ≤ 2 was most suitable for identifying enough animals that required treatment. However, since using this combination would have resulted in many false positives, it would be recommended to perform a fecal examination after selecting the animals requiring treatment based on the clinical parameters.

    No full text
Coxiella (C.) burnetii is regarded the cause of the Query-Fever or Q-Fever. This small, only a few micrometres long, polymorph and gram-negative bacteria is found all over the world except for New Zealand and Antarctica. Especially cloven-hooved animals like cattle, sheep and goats, as well as dogs, cats, wild animals and ticks are considered as reservoir for this zoonosis. Even if this infection often proceeds without symptoms, fetal death, abort and premature birth may occur especially with animals but also in humans during their pregnancy. Although the popularity of livestock farming and breeding of new world camels has been growing in the past years, there are only a few scientific papers concerning new world camels in combination with a potential C. burnetii infection. Therefore, it is the intention of this paper if new world camels are susceptible to this pathogen and also to discover a possible distribution of serum positive animals in the context of breed, age and sex. In the course of this paper, samples of a scientific paper from the year 2015 have been used und were tested on the existence of antibodies to C. burnetii using ELISA. Out of the 267 still existing samples, not even one was explicitly showing antibodies. Just one sample came somewhat near the limit. It can therefore be assumed that this pathogen has almost no relevance in new world camels and consequently the caretakers or owners are under no risk of infection with C. burnetii from these animals.

The role of endoscopy in bovine internal medicine - a review of current indication fields

    No full text
Endoscopy in bovine internal medicine has come a long way from the first profound research papers in the 1980s to its present-day use. This paper reviews the progress in the 2000s and identifies the main application fields for diagnostic and therapeutic use. Inclusion criteria for scientific papers and reports encompassed focus on endoscopic examination techniques in cattle in the field of internal medicine and publication in a peer reviewed journal (case report/review/original research paper/short communication). Only papers written in English or German language were considered. Studies on laparoscopy, theloscopy, and bronchoscopy show that endoscopic approaches often enable more rapid and accurate diagnosis and treatment options for single diseased animals as well as on a herd level. Oesophagoscopy, rumenoscopy, cystoscopy and thoracoscopy have also been increasingly studied and proven to be safe and effective tools with some limitations in diagnosing and/or treating various diseases in cattle. Scientific approaches explored the epidural space in cattle and comparison of different endoscope systems lead to recommendations for sinuscopy. Yet, this narrative literature review clearly shows that unlike in human medicine, where endoscopy as a minimally invasive technique is used for countless routine procedures every day, there is still some catching up to do in bovine medicine even though the potential of endoscopy in this field has been documented
