    The role of reporting in EU's Sustainable Finance strategy

    Seit Jahren spielt der nachhaltige Übergang eine wichtige Rolle in der Gestaltung der europäischen Politik. Von besonderer Bedeutung ist hierbei die Entwicklung eines nachhaltigen Finanzwesens. Zu diesem Zweck veröffentlicht die EU seit dem Green Deal 2019 im Rahmen ihrer Sustainable Finance – Strategie delegierte Verordnungen und Richtlinien, welche die rechtlichen Bestimmungen der Nachhaltigkeitsberichterstattung von Unternehmen festlegen. Die Forschungsfrage dieser Arbeit ist, welchen Beitrag das Reporting im Rahmen der Sustainable Finance – Strategie der EU zu einem nachhaltigen Übergang leistet. Das Ziel der Arbeit ist es, einen Überblick über alle für das Berichtswesen relevanten Rechtsakte, deren Zielsetzungen und Funktionen sowie ihre wirtschaftlichen Auswirkungen und kritische Aspekte zu analysieren. Dazu wurde eine umfangreiche Literaturrecherche durchgeführt. Die Taxonomie-Verordnung bietet ein Rahmenwerk zur Klassifizierung nachhaltiger wirtschaftlicher Tätigkeiten. Durch günstigere Finanzierungskonditionen für taxonomiekonforme wirtschaftliche Tätigkeiten sollen mehr Kapitalflüsse in nachhaltige wirtschaftliche Tätigkeiten fließen. Die CSRD enthält Regelungen im Hinblick auf die Offenlegung von nachhaltigkeitsbezogenen Informationen. Sie zielt darauf ab, die Berichtspflicht auf weitere Unternehmen zu erweitern und regelt die Prüfung sowie die Veröffentlichung von nachhaltigkeitsbezogenen Informationen in Lageberichten. Die ESRS umfassen Standards zu nachhaltigkeitsbezogenen Informationen und sollen ihre Qualität, Vergleichbarkeit und Verständlichkeit gewährleisten. Weitere Offenlegungsregelungen umfassen die CSDDD, SFDR und der Standard für Green Bonds. Kritikpunkte an der Strategie betreffen unter anderem das Fehlen einer Verzichtsdebatte, ein erheblicher zusätzlicher Aufwand sowie Mehrkosten im Zuge der Berichterstattung, die Umgestaltung interner Berichtsprozesse und Greenflation.Since years the sustainable development has played an important role in shaping European policy. Especially important here is the development of a sustainable finance system. For this purpose since the Green Deal 2019 the EU has published delegated regulations and directives as part of its sustainable finance strategy, which define the legal regulations for sustainability reporting by companies. The research question of this thesis is what contribution reporting under the EU's Sustainable Finance Strategy makes to a sustainable development. The aim of the thesis is to provide an overview of all legal acts relevant to reporting, their objectives and functions as well as their economic impact and critical aspects. For this purpose an extensive literature review was carried out. The Taxonomy regulation provides a framework for classifying sustainable economic activities. Through more favorable financing conditions for taxonomy-compliant economic activities more capital flows are expected to flow into sustainable economic activities. The CSRD contains regulations with regard to the disclosure of sustainability-related information. It aims to extend the reporting obligation to other companies and regulates the audit as well as publication of sustainability-related information in reports. The ESRS contain standards on sustainability-related information and are expected to ensure its quality, comparability and comprehensibility. Further disclosure regulations include the CSDDD, SFDR and the standard for green bonds.     Exploring surface chemistry : adsorption and reaction dynamics of molecules on graphene and Ag(110) surfaces

    Die Untersuchung von Molekülen und ihrer Reaktivität auf der Ebene einzelner Moleküle mit Hilfe der Rastertunnelmikroskopie (scanning tunneling microscopy; STM) liefert wertvolle Einblicke in molekulare Eigenschaften und das Verhalten auf Oberflächen. STM ermöglicht es, einzelne Moleküle mit atomarer Präzision zu visualisieren, zu manipulieren und zu untersuchen und grundlegende Informationen über ihre elektronische Struktur, chemische Bindung und dynamische Prozesse zu liefern. Das Verständnis dieser Eigenschaften auf der Ebene einzelner Moleküle eröffnet neue Möglichkeiten in der Molekülelelektronik, Nanotechnologie und heterogenen Katalyse.Die Untersuchung der chemischen Reaktionsdynamik zielt darauf ab, zu entschlüsseln, wie Energie von Reaktanten zu Produkten verteilt wird, um letztlich eine bessere Kontrolle über chemische Prozesse zu ermöglichen. Dies ist insbesondere im Kontext der heterogenen Katalyse von Bedeutung, bei der das Verständnis von Bindungsbruch- und Bindungsbildungsmechanismen auf kristallinen Metalloberflächen zu Fortschritten bei der Reaktionsoptimierung führen kann. Der erste Teil dieser Studie untersucht die Chemisorption und Reaktionsdynamik von Trifluormethyl Molekülen (CF3) auf der Ag(110) Oberfläche unter Verwendung eines Tieftemperatur-STM unter Ultrahoch- Vakuumbedingungen (UHV), was bisher noch nicht erforscht wurde. Die geringe Reaktivität der Ag(110) Oberfläche macht sie zu einem idealen Kandidaten für die Untersuchung der elektronengestützten Dissoziation und Diffusion von CF3 Molekülen. Die Studie zeigt die dissoziative Chemisorption von Iodtrifluormethan (CF3I) und die anschließende Reaktionsdynamik von CF3 auf Ag(110). Diese Arbeit trägt zum Verständnis der Oberflächen-Molekül-Interaktionen und Reaktionsmechanismen auf Metalloberflächen bei, mit Auswirkungen auf die Katalyse.Wenn Moleküle direkt auf Metalloberflächen adsorbieren, können verschiedene Nachteile auftreten. Die starke Wechselwirkung zwischen den Molekülen und der Oberfläche kann deren elektronische Struktur und Reaktivität verändern, wodurch das Molekül seine Funktionalität verliert. Zudem wird es schwierig, die präzise Anordnung der Moleküle auf der Oberfläche zu kontrollieren. Im Gegensatz dazu kann eine Entkopplungsschicht die molekularen Eigenschaften bewahren und eine stabilere und kontrollierte Umgebung für STM Untersuchungen bieten, indem die Wechselwirkung zwischen den Molekülen und dem Substrat minimiert wird. Graphen, eine zweidimensionale Monoschicht aus Kohlenstoffatomen, die in einem Honigwabenmuster angeordnet sind, weist einzigartige elektronische Eigenschaften auf, die beim Wachsen auf der Pt(111) Oberfläche erhalten bleiben, da die Wechselwirkung zwischen der Graphenschicht und dem Substrat schwach ist. Dies macht es zu einem idealen System, um die Adsorption und Reaktivität organischer Moleküle auf der Graphenschicht zu untersuchen und dabei die intrinsischen Eigenschaften von Graphen zu bewahren. Kapitel 3 und 4 präsentiert eine STM Studie unter UHV-Bedingungen der Deposition organischer Moleküle auf der mit Graphen bedeckten Pt(111)-Oberfläche (gPt(111)), wobei Experimente bei kryogenen Temperaturen (5 K) durchgeführt wurden, um stabile Abbildungen zu erhalten und die Manipulation einzelner Moleküle zu kontrollieren. Der erste Teil dieser Studie konzentriert sich auf die Deposition halogenierten organischen Molekülen auf gPt(111) und untersucht die Dissoziation der Kohlenstoff-Halogen-Bindung und die anschließenden C–C-Homokopplungsreaktionen. Das Moiré-Muster des Graphen/Pt(111)-Systems, das aufgrund der Gitterfehlanpassung entsteht, sollte eine entscheidende Rolle bei der Steuerung dieser Reaktionen spielen. Externe Stimuli, einschließlich durch die STM Spitze induzierte Spannungspulse, wurden verwendet, um Dehalogenierung und chemische Reaktionen auszulösen.The study of molecules and their reactivity at the single-molecule level using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) provides valuable insights into molecular properties, transformations, and reactions on surfaces. STM can visualize, manipulate, and investigate individual molecules with atomic-scale precision and provide fundamental information about their electronic structure, chemical bonding, and dynamics. Understanding these properties at the single-molecule level unlocks new possibilities in molecular electronics, nanotechnology, and heterogeneous catalysis. The study of chemical reaction dynamics aims to uncover how energy is distributed from reactants to products, ultimately enabling better control over chemical processes. This is particularly significant in the context of heterogeneous catalysis, where understanding bond-breaking and bond-forming mechanisms on crystalline metal surfaces can lead to advancements in reaction optimization. The first part of this study investigates the so far unexplored chemisorption and reaction dynamics of trifluoromethyl (CF3) molecules on the Ag(110) surface, using a low-temperature STM under ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) conditions. The Ag(110) surface's low reactivity make it an ideal candidate for studying electron-induced dissociation and diffusion of CF3 molecules. The study demonstrates the dissociative chemisorption of iodotrifluoromethane (CF3I) and the subsequent reaction dynamics of CF3 on Ag(110). This work contributes to the understanding of surface-molecule interactions and reaction mechanisms on metal surfaces, with implications for catalysis.When molecules adsorb directly onto metal surfaces, several disadvantages can arise. The strong interaction between the molecules and the surface can change their electronic structure and reactivity, causing the molecule to lose its functionality. Additionally, it becomes challenging to control the precise arrangement of molecules on the surface. In contrast, a decoupling layer can preserve the molecular properties and provide a more stable and controlled environment for STM studies by minimizing the interaction between the molecules and the substrate. Graphene, a two-dimensional monolayer of carbon atoms arranged in a honeycomb lattice, exhibits unique electronic properties that are preserved when grown on the Pt(111) surface, due to the weak interaction between the graphene layer and the substrate. This makes it an ideal system for studying the adsorption and reactivity of organic molecules on top of the graphene layer while maintaining the intrinsic properties of graphene. Chapters 3 and 4 present an STM study under UHV conditions of organic molecule deposition on graphene-covered Pt(111) (gPt(111)) surface, with experiments performed at cryogenic temperatures (5 K) for stable imaging and controlled manipulation of single molecules. The first part of this study focuses on the deposition of halogenated organic molecules on gPt(111) and explores the carbon-halogen bond dissociation and subsequent C–C homocoupling reactions. The Moiré pattern of the graphene/Pt(111) system, arising from a lattice mismatch, is assumed to play a critical role in guiding these reactions.     Business air travel and its sustainable alternatives in Austrian knowledge-oriented companies : analyzing the perspectives of affected employees

    Diese Studie untersucht die Perspektiven von Arbeitnehmer:innen in wissensorientierten Unternehmen in Österreich, die aus beruflichen Gründen innerhalb Europas reisen - eine Gruppe, die in der bestehenden Literatur oft übersehen wird. Geschäftsreisen machen zwar einen geringeren Anteil am Gesamtreiseaufkommen aus als Freizeitreisen, sind aber für die Bemühungen um eine ganzheitliche Verringerung von Treibhausgasen von gleicher Bedeutung. Die Studie soll diese Lücke schließen und einen Beitrag zu den im Mobilitätsmasterplan 2030 für Österreich festgelegten Zielen leisten. Mit Hilfe einer qualitativen Methode anhand von 12 halbstrukturierten Interviews untersucht die Studie die Motivationen und Faktoren, die das Reiseverhalten der österreichischen Angestellten beeinflussen, wobei der Schwerpunkt auf der Wahrnehmung von Geschäftsflugreisen und ihren nachhaltigen Alternativen sowie der Rolle persönlicher Einstellungen, Werte und Unternehmensrichtlinien im Entscheidungsprozess liegt.Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass österreichische Geschäftsreisende zwar die Bedeutung von Nachhaltigkeit anerkennen, ihre Reiseentscheidungen aber vor allem von einer Präferenz für Effizienz, Professionalität und persönliche Freizeit geprägt sind. Nachhaltige Alternativen, wie zum Beispiel die Bahn, werden als unbequem, unpraktisch und unzuverlässig empfunden, es sei denn, sie bieten vergleichbare Reisezeiten, direkte Verbindungen und Möglichkeiten zur produktiven Nutzung der Zeit. Daher werden Geschäftsreisen mit dem Flugzeug nach wie vor bevorzugt. Wenn die Mitarbeiter:innen selbst entscheiden können, ob sie reisen und welches Verkehrsmittel sie benutzen wollen, werden die Entscheidungen durch die Definition der Notwendigkeit und der Art des Verkehrsmittels weiter beeinflusst.Die Ergebnisse unterstreichen die Notwendigkeit externer Anreize, um Verhaltensänderungen zu fördern. Zu den Empfehlungen für die Verringerung der CO₂-Emissionen von Unternehmen gehören die Verbesserung der europäischen Eisenbahninfrastruktur, die Erhöhung der Zuverlässigkeit des öffentlichen Verkehrs und die Überarbeitung der Reiserichtlinien von Unternehmen, um nachhaltigen Alternativen den Vorrang zu geben. Die Studie zeigt Möglichkeiten für künftige Forschungen auf, um die Ergebnisse durch quantitative Ansätze zu verallgemeinern, Perspektiven der Mitarbeiter:innen in verschiedenen Ländern und Branchen zu untersuchen und vergleichende Fallstudien durchzuführen, um Best Practices abzuleiten. Diese Erkenntnisse bieten eine Grundlage für umsetzbare Strategien zur Förderung der Nachhaltigkeit bei Geschäftsreisen.This study investigates the perspectives of employees in knowledge-oriented companies in Austria who travel for work within Europe, a group often overlooked in existing literature. Business travel, while constituting a smaller share of overall travel compared to leisure, is critical to reduction efforts of greenhouse gases on a holistic level. The research aims to address this gap and contribute to the goals outlined in the Austrian Mobility Master Plan 2030. Using a qualitative approach through 12 semi-structured interviews, the study examines the motivations and factors influencing Austrian employees’ travel behaviors, focusing on the perception of business air travel and its sustainable alternatives, the role of personal attitudes, values, and corporate travel guidelines in decision-making processes.Findings reveal that while Austrian business travelers recognize the importance of sustainability, their travel choices are predominantly shaped by a preference for efficiency, professionalism, and personal free time. Sustainable alternatives, such as trains, are perceived as uncomfortable, impractical, and unreliable unless they offer comparable travel times, direct connections, and opportunities for productive use of time. Consequently, business air travel remains the favored option. If employees have the autonomy in deciding whether to travel and which mode of transport to use, travel further shapes decisions by defining the necessity and mode of transport.The results emphasize the need for external incentives to encourage behavior change. Recommendations for reducing corporate CO₂ emissions include improving Europe’s railway infrastructure, enhancing public transport reliability, and revising corporate travel policies to prioritize sustainable alternatives. The study highlights opportunities for future research to generalize findings through quantitative approaches, explore employee perspectives across countries and industries, and conduct comparative case studies to derive best practices.     Influencers and their videos play a central role in young people’s media consumption. These videos are watched for both entertainment and information purposes. In this paper, we will explore the question of whether influencer videos are suitable for second language learning, more specifically French, Italian, and Spanish, in schools, and which competencies and literacies are required for language learning with influencer videos. Empirical findings will not be dis- cussed, but a framework for further scientific endeavors and empirical surveys will be established. The aim of the paper is to show the potential of influencer videos for the language learning process despite linguistic hurdles

    Intelligent Service Robotics / Trust and care robots: philosophical considerations, ethical challenges, and viable options

    This article presents a new moral idea of trust, which seems appropriate when dealing with care robots. When we trust our counterpart, an ambivalent relationship emerges. This is often assumed, at least in the professional debate, because the person who places this trust enters a relationship of dependence and thereby also takes a risk. At the same time, due to the given trust, there is a good reason that the respective addressee will do everything not to compromise this assumed security, sincerity, and trustworthiness. This article first examines the concept of trust and derives a moral approach for application in the context of care robots. These machines are increasingly finding their way into the care sector and can support people receiving care, mobilize them, or monitor health conditions. Nevertheless, it seems more than doubtful whether AI-based robots can be trusted at all. For this reason, in a second step, numerous studies and works are examined which not only present the integration and interaction with care robots in real settings, but also allow a better understanding of the connection to the presented moral idea of trust. This is followed by an ethical discussion of the opportunities and risks of care robots, which should help to illustrate the problems of a trusting relationship with them. An ethically justifiable approach to these robot companions and trust as an important component in the sense of the idea presented seem reasonable.Accepted versio

    Learners’ beliefs about languages and language learning have been acknowledged as a key aspect shaping the language learning process. While research to date has largely focused on foreign/second language learning, only a handful of empirical studies have examined learners’ beliefs about multilingualism more broadly; all of them quantitative in nature. Taking a qualitative approach, this study examines learners’ beliefs about multilingualism in two distinct linguistic and sociocultural settings: urban and rural middle schools in Austria.     The objective of this study is to analyze how students in primary and secondary education in Spain and Portugal currently use address forms when speaking to teachers. Additionally, the study examines how these practices have evolved over the past thirty years by comparing present-day usage in both countries. Drawing on variationist sociolinguistics, the study demonstrates that the distinct differences in address forms between Spain and Portugal reflect differing perceptions of the hierarchical position that teachers occupy in each country. The fieldwork involved administering 150 written surveys to students aged 12 to 16 from three Spanish secondary schools and another 150 comparable surveys to students of the same age from three Portuguese secondary schools

    Amidst growing expectations for higher education institutions (HEIs) to address societal challenges through multi-perspective educational and research activities, this study examines the institutional status and level of support for campus-community partnerships (CCPs) at Austrian HEIs. By leveraging a survey conducted among 107 university teachers, the research explores the current perception and implementation of CCPs in the academic landscape. The findings indicate that the integration of CCPs is deeply intertwined with the organizational framework of HEIs, highlighting that while campus-community partnerships are seen as valuable for enhancing the educational experience and community as well as for organizational development, they remain largely unsupported by the necessary institutional structures and formal processes. The study concludes with recommendations for improving the design and framework of CCPs to better meet the evolving demands of higher education engagement with societal challenges, and suggests a more structured approach to institutionalizing these partnerships, taking into account the specific organizational context for implementing effective collaborations.Version of recor

    Geo: Geography and Environment / Muddying the grounds of environmental justice in the Pacific mangroves: From recognition to feeling for justice at the food-climate nexus

    The Pacific Islands find themselves at the crossroads of the polycrisis of environmental injustices. From dramatic changes in their food system and livelihoods to environmental degradation and climate change, Pacific Islanders are navigating both slow and rapid socio-ecological shifts which impact people in uneven ways. Building on critiques of environmental justice and its reliance on a universalist Western framework, this paper points to the need to expand the recognition dimension of environmental justice to bring forth haptic and sensorial dimensions of justice. Critical island and indigenous scholarship on dimensions of knowing with/through the body, alongside insights from political ecology of the body, help theoretically frame what we can learn from feeling for justice. Moving beyond simplistic victimisation or hero narratives, in this paper I draw from ethnographic vignettes on emotional, haptic and embodied experiences of environmental change as experienced by women gleaning for food in mangrove forests in the Solomon Islands. Through these vignettes, I showcase multi-scalar and temporal dimensions of environmental (in)justices, particularly highlighting what a bodily orientation can illuminate about ongoing and uneven legacies of environmental change. Through re-centering recognition of the body and also the dimension of pleasure which emerges through/with the mangroves, the article foregrounds how feelings for justice can point to which environmental futures are desired. Importantly, I argue that knowing through the body is a type of knowing differently that muddies questions about not only who is recognised in environmental justice struggles, but also which values and practices should be taken into account.Europäische Kommission FALA

    Discover Sustainability / Sustainability in fooring: assessing the environmental and economic impacts of circular business models

    The transition to a circular economy depends on business model innovation. Quantitative sustainability assessment methods, such as life cycle assessments (LCA) in combination with economic metrics, represent valuable tools for initial approaches to measuring the environmental performance and impact of circular business models (CBM). This work, based on a case study using real-life data from a wood parquet manufacturer, assesses the environmental and economic impact of a CBM compared to a traditional linear business model (LBM) by applying LCA and circularity indicators. A wood parquet floor is at the center of the investigation. The value of the floor is retained by extending the LBM with a take-back system after its initial service life has expired. After refurbishing the floor, it is sold as a new off-the-shelf product. The results of our analysis show that the CBM creates less environmental impact while achieving the same target profit as the LBM. Furthermore, it is shown that the profit per impact for the CBM is also lower than that of the LBM in the investigated impact categories. The circularity assessment also indicates the CBM as the more circular alternative. This study’s findings align with those from other work, which identify CBMs as a more environmentally beneficial solution than LBMs. The results presented here provide a unique case study highlighting opportunities for creating value in new ways within a circular economy.Bitte wählen 892416Version of recor
