THE PLIGHT OF THE FARMER
There are in the United States about 
10,000,000 farmers, and they constitute 
ten per cent of the entire population; 
the value of their annual products being 
approximately $10,000,000,000, or $1,000 
for each farmer. The liquor interests 
claim that should prohibition prevail 
the farmers will be deprived of their 
market for this large amount of produce.
But Charles Stelzle, who has made a 
careful study of the situation, shows 
that there is another side to the ques- 
tion. He says:
“The liquor industry purchases every 
year about $100,000,000 worth of produce 
from the farmer, and therefore the liquor 
industry consumes just one per cent of 
all that the farmer produces, that is $10 
for each farmer in the United States.” 
This gives a little different shade to the 
situation. “The question is, what will the 
‘poor farmer’ do with his $10 worth of 
produce which the liquor industry can- 
not purchase when it is put out of busi- 
ness? What will happen to the farmers 
when the brewers and distillers no longer 
buy their products? Farm experts tell 
us that the day is fast approaching when 
the American farmer will be unable to 
raise enough produce to supply this 
country.
“There are over 20,000.000 families in 
the United States which would purchase 
the stuff now sold to the liquor men. 
According to a study made by the De- 
partment of Labor of the United States, 
the average workingman’s family spends 
annually about $500 for food. This 
would make a total of at least $10,000,- 
000,000 per year for the 20,000,000 fam- 
ilies.
“If the 20,000,000 families were each 
to increase their purchasing power one 
per cent or $5.00 per year it would 
amount to exactly $100,000,000—the sum 
of the liquor men’s purchases from the 
farmer. But let us assume that the re- 
tail figure at which the average family 
would be compelled to buy is twice as 
high as the liquor men pay. This would 
increase the amount necessary to be pur- 
chased to $10 per year for each family, 
or about twenty cents per week. There 
can be no doubt that, with the increas- 
ing earning power and spending ability 
of the average workingman’s family, due 
to the abolition of the liquor traffic— 
the average family will easily wish to 
spend at least twenty cents more per 
week, for cherries, peaches, apples, ber-
ries, and the various forms of grain, to 
say nothing about flour and bread and 
other materials which come primarily 
from the farm.”
The liquor dealers have been flooding 
Nebraska and other campaign states wit- 
statements intending to frighten farm­
ers against prohibition, and the Journal 
of Lincoln, Nebraska, in answering 
these statements presents for the consid- 
eration of the voters the following:
“The gallon of whisky which led to 
the death of George Nagel and to the 
verge of delirium tremens his companion 
in misery did make a market for a peck 
of Nebraska corn. Nebraska farmers 
are entitled to know this. To any 
farmer to whom the marketing of a peck 
of corn is the supreme thing in life, the 
argument of the liquor men on this point 
must have its valid appeal.
“Though even such a farmer, if there 
be such, should not forget that, if these 
men had not been paying three or four 
dollars for the gallon of whisky which 
made a market for fifteen cents’ worth 
of farmers’ corn, they would perhaps 
have been buying three or four dollars’ 
worth of farmers’ bread and beefsteak 
instead.
“But, overlooking this possibility, was 
it worth what it cost to make this mar- 
ket for this fifteen cents’ worth of corn? 
For the sake of the market for this fif- 
teen cents’ worth of corn, Clay county 
is apparently to be to the expense of 
burying what might otherwise have re- 
mained for years, an industrious citizen, 
himself a market for many pecks of corn 
or other farm products. The coroner and 
the undertaker will cost Clay county a 
good many pecks of corn. The survivor 
of this gallon of whisky will evidently 
have to be given medical treatment at 
Clay county’s expense, costing thus the 
equivalent of a great many pecks of 
corn. There is danger that he may be 
long a charge upon the community, con- 
suming many a peck of corn for which 
no fifteen-cent return is given.
“On consideration of this case we 
are convinced that the liquor men will 
have to find some better defense of their 
business than the market they make for 
the farmers’ corn. What shall it profit 
a farming state, if it get fifteen cents 
for a peck of corn in order to have it 
distilled into four dollars’ worth of 
trouble, expense and tragedy for the 
state?”

A Telegraph Operator’s Story.
Many years ago, when Chicago was not as largo 
as it is at present, and Boston was considered a 
big town, I was employed as night operator at the 
Chicago end of the machine. We did considerable 
work directly with Boston. I remember how much 
I enjoyed the work at night, everything being 
quiet.
At the Boston end of the route was an operator 
to whom I felt very much attached, although I had 
never met him face to face. We had worked to 
gether so much, although over one thousand miles 
apart, that we knew each other well. Our work 
consisted of quotation figures, etc., connected with 
stocks—in itself very dry stuff.
As I said, the operator in Boston was a good one. 
I loved him; he was so bright and almost always 
accurate. It was easy for us to work together; we 
understood each other so well.

After some months I noticed my old friend would 
occasionally miss a night. I always asked him 
the next night the cause of his absence, etc. He 
would reply that he was not well, or, was out with 
the boys, or some such excuse.
About the beginning of the new year I missed 
my old friend for more than a week. I began to 
get uneasy; in fact, I was lonesome, for Fred and 
I used to chat away as we worked and passed the 
• time away nicely.
As I said, a little over a week passed by and I 
began to think  had lost Fred for good, when, to 
my joy, this evening my old friend called me up 
with his usual bang. I sat down and we had a 
nice little chat.
I noticed that his touch was not as precise as 
formerly. “Fred,” said I, “where have you been 
the last ten days?”
- “Oh,” he said, “don’t ask me. I am afraid, from 
what remarks I have heard you make off and on, 
that you would not approve of my doings the last 
week.”
“Fred,” said I, “I fear you have been drinking. 
Tell me truly if it is not so. I am sure,” said I 
“I can sympathize with you, for drinking has cost 
me a great deal. I still carry the scars of it with 
me. But I found a remedy that cured me of the 
habit.”
“We will have another talk at 2 o’clock a. m.,” 
said Fred. “Good-bye.”
Two o’clock a. m.—Fred asked me how cold it 
was. I told him the glass registered 22 below 
zero. “Oh, my!” said Fred, “Boston for me; 
only 30 above zero.”
“Now,” said Fred, “what were you going to 
tell me about the Chicago remedy that takes away 
appetite for drink? I might as well acknowledge 
at once that I am getting to be a hard drinker. I 
am not well to-night, and ought not to be here, 
but it is all my own fault.”
“Fred,” said I, “the moment you touched the 
key to-night I knew you had been drinking.”
“I am sorry,” said Fred, “if my touch gave you 
that impression to-night, but I must plead guilty 
to the charge. Did you say you used to be a hard 
drinker?”
Said I, “I am sorry to say that I have been a 
hard drinker, but for seven years I have not tasted 
liquor of any kind. I got to the point where I saw 
it must be drink, destruction or quit, and I quit.”
“I have tried to quit it three different times,” 
said Fred, -*and failed each time; tell me what  
you took to help you.”
“I took the Lord Jesus Christ,” said I, “and He 
cured me; and there is nothing else that will cure 
you but the same medicine.”
“What denomination is best to mix the medi- 
cine?” he asked.
“No denomination mixed the medicine for me,” 
said I. “I got in earnest in the matter and took 
the advice of others who had been cured through 
a personal visit made to the Great Physician, Who 
is none other than the Lord Jesus Christ. I went 
alone in prayer to Jesus and asked Him to cure me 
as I was not able to help myself. He came to me 
personally with healing powers and cured me, soul 
and body.”
“I will talk with you to-morrow night,” said 
Fred. “Good-bye.”
To-morrow night comes. Fred calls up. “I 
have been conversing to-day with three church 
members and one clergyman,” he said; “all good 
Christians, of course. None of these men agree 
with you. They each say that Christianity has 
nothing to do with our habits as long as they are 
innocent. Rev.--------, of St. -------- Church, told
me he did not discourage wine drinking in modera- 
tion. He says he drinks wine occasionally, but he 
is strongly opposed to drunkenness. I spoke about 
being cured of the drink habit in answer to prayer. 
The clergyman shook his head and said something 
about sins.
“Two of the laymen I spoke to about being 
cured of habits, etc., said they took no stock in

such stuff. One of the men said he did not doubt 
it. Some Christians, he said, were more active 
than others. He did not question but God would 
help men in answer to prayer, but personally he 
knew nothing about it. He is a church member 
in good standing.
“Now,” said Fred, “I have given you a little 
idea of how some of our Boston Christians differ 
from you, and I conclude that there must be a 
difference between a Chicago and a Boston Chris- 
tian.”
“Fred,” said I, “I told you before to beware of 
men. I do not ask you to believe me. Go to God 
in the name of Jesus Christ, and give yourself 
to Him, soul and body, and He will take you and 
heal you, soul and body, as sure as you and I are 
conversing through this mysterious agency al- 
though we are 1,000 miles apart.”
finished this last sentence, I paused, ex- 
pecmg a reply. I was surprised at not receiving 
it, but did not intimate to him my surprise. I 
thought he might have been thinking about some- 
thing else, so I let him alone.
In about five minutes, he said, calling me by 
name: “Theorizing will do me no longer; actual 
facts and truths were always sweet to me; Jesus 
has been here with me these last five minutes. 
He has shown me that he did cure you and save 
you, and He has just now done the same for me; 
glory to Jesus; glory to God!”
My friend Fred is still living, I understand, at 
Detroit, Mich.; where I hope he will receive a 
copy of this little story. It will no doubt bring 
back to his mind sweet recollections of a five 
minute visit from the Saviour of mankind.
