The role of math anxiety in U.S. adults’ ability to monitor and seek help during an arithmetic task
Metacognitive monitoring, the awareness of one’s own knowledge, is important because it can inform control decisions like help-seeking. The goal of the current study was to examine whether and why math anxiety is related to metacognitive monitoring and control during an arithmetic task. In two studies, we expected judgments to be more accurate (i.e., more aligned with fraction arithmetic performance) when made retrospectively (i.e., after the task) compared to prospectively (i.e., before the task), but that this difference would be smaller among those with higher math anxiety. This prediction was based on the hypothesis that higher math anxiety would be related to more accurate prospective judgments. Overall, adults were underconfident in their fraction arithmetic performance and overconfident in their decimal arithmetic performance, but their judgments were more accurate retrospectively compared to prospectively. Additionally, math anxiety was negatively related to metacognitive bias and this relation may have been a reflection of math self-concept’s relation to monitoring (i.e., suggesting math-anxious adults may reflect on their math self-concept when making monitoring judgments). Consistent with self-regulated learning theories, adults were more likely to request hints when they had lower levels of confidence. Although math-anxious individuals asked for help more often than non-anxious adults in general, they asked for help less frequently when they had low confidence. These findings suggest that math anxiety may hinder people’s ability to accurately predict their performance in some cases and therefore may be related to suboptimal self-regulatory decisions like help seeking
Urban heat island effects on arthropod populations and communities in Jacksonville, FL
The urban heat island (UHI) effect makes urban areas hotter than rural areas. Urban areas, and the extreme heat that comes with them, are becoming more common worldwide. If UHIs lead to changes in arthropod community diversity, then ecosystem structure and services could be disrupted. Previous UHI studies have investigated heat impacts on arthropod ecology, but many focus on one species while studies that consider thermal diversity within a single urban area have been limited. In Jacksonville, Florida, areas that are 12°C hotter than the coolest areas are considered local UHIs. The goal of this research is to investigate how the UHI effect is impacting arthropod populations and communities in Jacksonville. For the population-focused research, Eastern lubber grasshoppers (Romalea microptera) were collected from local heat island and non-heat island sites and reared them in the lab under both high temperature and control conditions. Growth, feeding, and reproductive rates of the grasshoppers were compared across treatments. For the community-focused research, arthropod communities were sampled from local heat island and non-heat island sites around Jacksonville and diversity was compared across sites.
There were significant differences in grasshopper growth rate, feeding rate and reproduction rate between high heat and control treatments in the lab, but statistically significant differences due to grasshopper origin were minimal. There was no statistically significant difference in invertebrate diversity of local heat island or non-heat island sites, but there was a consistent trend towards higher diversity at non-heat island sites. These results suggest the UHI effects in Jacksonville are not yet strongly limiting to arthropod species present in the area, and that UHI effects have not yet caused divergence in thermal tolerance at the population level. Deeper understanding of UHI effects on arthropods requires research that incorporates longer time frames and larger sample sizes
Geometric properties of positive definite matrices: Means, order, and metrics
In this thesis, we study matrix means from a geometric point of view. In particular, we consider divergences of the form Tr[A + B − 2G(A, B)] for certain Geometric-Type matrix means G(A, B). We derive alternative formulations of this distance function through the application of one-sided inverses of G(A, B). When G(A, B) = A#B, we give a curve parametrization of the straight-line path between two points with respect to this semi-metric and present conditions under which this holds for other Geometric-Type means. For read- ability and self-containment, we introduce most of the preliminary concepts to build up to our main goals
Severe aggression among zoo-housed coconut (Trichoglossus haematodus) and rainbow (Trichoglossus moluccanus) lorikeets: Wellbeing considerations for free-flight aviaries
As conservation and education institutions, modern zoos balance the needs of animals with the interests of visitors through several strategies which can increase animal wellbeing and improve visitor experience. Environmental enrichment is frequently employed to increase the suitability of anthropogenic environments for zoo-housed animals, such as through walkthrough habitats and free-flight aviaries. While habitats such as these are important for visitor experience and can be enriching to animals, there are also wellbeing considerations for these spaces. Walkthrough habitats can be a potential source of fear and stress for animals, as shown by increased frequencies of vigilance, undesirable behavior, and aggression. The present study addresses wellbeing concerns for the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens’s Rainbow (Trichoglossus moluccanus) and Coconut (Trichoglossus haematodus) Lorikeets, who have an history of increased injurious aggression (severe aggression). Research has shown that all aggression serves an important function in maintaining social structures, though increased severe aggression has been associated with social network instability, which can indicate reduced wellbeing. These concerns were addressed through a behavioral monitoring study, social network analysis, and the introduction of privacy perches to see if they decreased severe aggression. Results show these lorikeets’ social network communities are formed based on relatedness, contrary to previous literature on parrot sociality, with fluctuations in social behavior expression and network stability. While privacy perch too limited to say they affected aggression, these findings have broad implications for future research on parrot sociality, what intrinsic or extrinsic factors impact animal wellbeing, and for the assessment of wellbeing in zoos

Long-term assessment of the morphological behavior of the beaches north of Sebastian Inlet, Florida
The morphological behavior of the beaches north of Sebastian Inlet, Florida is investigated by applying Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) analyses to a series of beach surveys conducted semi-annually (winter and summer) over a period of fifteen years (2005-2019), with the primary objectives being to 1) determine the extent to which the inlet’s influence to the north typically fluctuates on a short-term basis (e.g. annually), and 2) identify any long-term trends of accretion or erosion that might exist. Each survey is comprised of thirty-one cross-shore profiles that are referenced to permanently installed range monuments (“R-monuments”) that are spaced nominally 305 m (1,000 ft) apart along the top of the aeolian dune system. The domain examined extends roughly 9,150 m (30,000 ft) from R-189 at the northern end to R-219 immediately adjacent to the inlet’s north jetty. Unlike previous studies (e.g. Dally, 2023) that constructed Digital Terrain Models (DTM) for a much smaller domain between R-213 and R-219 and shorter time period (1993-2003) in the hopes of using planform EOF analysis to identify 2D-H morphologic behavior, the study herein confines the EOF analysis to the actual profile survey data collected at each individual monument from R-189 to R-219, as well as spans the entire timeframe for which survey data are available (2005-2019). The spatial eigenfunctions and temporal coefficients generated from nominally thirty surveys at each monument are compared by overlaying the mean profiles and each corresponding eigenfunction. Through consistent signaling in the first eigenfunction, it was found that the annual effects of the inlet typically extend approximately two kilometers to the north, with noticeable impacts reaching as far as R-212. EOF analysis revealed consistent morphodynamic trends, including seasonal signals, longshore bar movement, and terrace features. To further investigate spatial patterns, an EOF analysis was performed on the collection of mean profiles from each monument, allowing detection of alongshore transitions in beach shape. This less common, spatial form of EOF exposes a clear morphological shift near R-211, supporting the estimated spatial reach of the jetty’s influence. Additionally, contour maps of mean and seasonal profiles reveal steepened nearshore profiles and altered sandbar patterns south of R-209, confirming the presence of more uniform and natural beach morphology north of this transition. These results provide insight into how shoreline and nearshore morphology vary over time and space, particularly in response to inlet stabilization and longshore sediment transport processes
