The Counselor Educator’s Guide to Sex Positivity: Ten Strategies for Enhancing Teaching and Supervision
No full textDespite positive shifts in cultural conversations surrounding sex, there is a lack of institutional focus on sexuality training in counselor education. This is surprising, given that sexuality is an inherently multicultural issue, and a sex positive framework aligns with counseling’s core values which include social justice, resilience, and wellness. We discuss the relevance of incorporating sex positivity in counselor education and provide ten strategies for counselor educators to integrate sex positivity into their teaching and supervision. These recommendations include engage in self-reflection to examine comfort with sexuality; examine curriculum to ensure sexuality objectives are infused in courses; use inclusive language; teach sexuality counseling from an intersectional sex positive framework; and engage in social justice and advocacy efforts. We provide a case study to illustrate how these strategies can be applied to enhance counselor education and supervision practice
Dietitian led low FODMAP nutrition intervention improves gastrointestinal symptoms in irritable bowel syndrome patients at Emory Digestive Health Clinic
No full textIrritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a functional gastrointestinal disorder characterized by inflammation, visceral hypersensitivity, altered gut microbiota, and dysmotility, leading to significant healthcare costs and patient burden. Despite dietary interventions being a primary therapeutic strategy, many IBS patients receive only basic low FODMAP diet guidance from non-dietitian providers, resulting in inconsistent adherence to evidence-based recommendations. This prospective, quasi-experimental study examined the impact of dietitian-led low FODMAP nutrition therapy on IBS symptom severity (IBS Symptoms Severity Score, IBS SSS) and quality of life (QOL) indicators, including stress, sleep, and physical activity. The study was conducted at Emory Digestive Health Ambulatory Clinics from September 2023 to June 2024, enrolling IBS-diagnosed patients referred by gastroenterologists using ROME criteria. Exclusion criteria included Crohn’s disease, gastroparesis, diabetes on metformin, celiac disease, and eating disorders. Participants received two nutrition counselling sessions, including an elimination phase (4–6 weeks) followed by food reintroduction.
Forty-four patients participated, with four dropouts. The sample comprised predominantly Caucasian women (85%) with an average age of 54 years. Notably, only 10% had previously consulted a dietitian, and 15% reported no prior dietary modifications. Statistical analysis using the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank test revealed significant reductions in general abdominal pain (p = .002), abdominal pain in the past 10 days (p \u3c .001), abdominal distention (p \u3c .001), satisfaction with bowel habits (p \u3c .001), and impact on daily life (p \u3c .001). Medication use decreased post-intervention. No significant differences were found across IBS subtypes (p = .282). However, physical activity negatively correlated with IBS SSS change, suggesting symptom improvement facilitated greater participation. Reported adherence challenges included restrictive diet requirements, travel difficulties, and financial burden.
The study highlights the effectiveness of dietitian-led FODMAP interventions in reducing IBS symptoms and improving daily functioning. Findings emphasize the need for interdisciplinary collaboration, physician referrals to dietitians, expanded FODMAP diet training, and Medicare coverage for nutrition counselling in IBS management
Investigating the roles of intrinsic point defects and transition metal doping in monolayer and bulk TiS2
No full textWithin this thesis, the magnetic and electronic properties of various 1T-TiS2 systems are thoroughly examined using density functional theory (DFT) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Formation energies and electronic implications of intrinsic point defects in bulk TiS2 and monolayer TiS2 are analyzed by approximating a computational monolayer of TiS2 as the surface layer of a bulk sample. This approximation is validated given that intralayer covalent bonding dominates interlayer van der Waals interactions. We conclude that the most energetically favorable intrinsic defects are Ti atoms settling above the outermost S plane and S vacancies. In addition, the change in stoichiometry impacts the band structure by shifting the Fermi level into the conduction band, resulting in a metallic region rather than a semiconducting region, as expected with pristine stoichiometry. Magnetism in bulk TiS2 is examined through SQUID magnetometry and density functional theory. Magnetism is not expected within pristine TiS2 due to the symmetry of covalent bonding; however, magnetization data demonstrate a paramagnetic signal. SQUID data are analyzed in conjunction with density functional theory calculations to provide a comprehensive understanding of the possible mechanisms within the sample that induce magnetism. Lastly, magnetic exchange pathways of monolayer TiS2 are computationally examined through systematic direct substitution of transition-metal atoms (V-, Cr-, Mn-) into Ti sites
Leaving it all behind: A storied experience
No full textDiversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) professionals are experiencing an unprecedented time as conservative politicians and legislators work to dismantle DEI in higher education. In 2022, Florida became one of the first states to introduce and enact anti-DEI legislation. Few studies have examined or investigated the lived experiences of DEI professionals currently living in the midst of this experience. The purpose of this narrative inquiry was to capture and restory the lived experiences of DEI professionals employed at public Florida universities during the introduction and enactment of anti-DEI legislation. Five co-composers contributed their stories of experience as data to this narrative inquiry. The discoveries from these stories were then amalgamated and (re)told in a short story titled, “Leaving It All Behind.” This short story portrays a fictionalized (re)presentation of what it meant for the co-composers of this narrative inquiry to live in the midst of the introduction and enactment of anti-DEI legislation in the state of Florid
