Imagining human rights for migrants in an evolving legal ecosystem: Intellectual, political, and public discourse in the United States, 1980-99

    No full text
During the 1980s and 90s, the domestic legal ecosystem in the United States wrestled with how to reconcile growing international support for universal human rights with internal concerns regarding migration. This thesis explores the legal development of human rights, both in theory and in practice, through discourse in intellectual, political, and public spaces, over time with respect to migrants and their families. It questions the role of human rights “talk” in a constantly evolving domestic legal ecosystem comprised of legislative and judicial institutions surrounded and shaped by scholarly discourse, political debate, and public reporting. Migrants to the United States contributed to this ecosystem by pushing for participation, often through allies, in legal processes that increasingly excluded and criminalized them. Historical analysis of legislation, judicial opinions, and law review articles from the period suggests that legislators, jurists, and intellectuals struggled over how to define migrants and their rights. Political debates from the Congressional record demonstrate a growing partisan divide that reduced migrants to the sum of their economic impact. Local, regional, and national press coverage reveals that nongovernmental advocacy groups supported migrants in asserting human rights challenges and raising public awareness. Taken together, this thesis contributes to a large body of historiography and links interdisciplinary scholarship investigating wider concepts of human rights, labor, as well as international and domestic law

Leucism in sharks: a histological examination

    No full text
Isolated cases of skin pigment disorders, including leucism, in sharks and rays have been reported for multiple species. Nonetheless, the morphological basis behind these chromatic anomalies has not been examined histologically. In this study, the authors quantified and compared the presence of melanin in multiple tissue samples of leucistic and fully pigmented blacktip sharks Carcharhinus limbatus. The authors\u27 results support lack of melanin to be responsible for leucistic colouration. The histological differences responsible were evaluated

Feature Template–Based Parametric Swept Geometry Generation from Point Cloud Data: Pipeline Design in Building Systems

    No full text
Reverse engineering has been used in construction, including residential and commercial buildings and heavy civil constructions, to help integrity access complex or combined damages. However, the previous reverse-engineering process was an inefficient timely manner approach, which was simple to measure the dimensions by the equipment, recorded and modeled by personnel who has engineering knowledge. For this reason, this research study focuses on developing reverse-engineering methods to support the previous reverse-engineering process, which is the parametric swept geometry definition and generation with a predefined feature template (FT) from point cloud data (PCD). PCD were recently obtained and used from the scanned images for facility management purposes. However, the geometry modeling for management in PCD required a lot of effort and time consumption. This research study focuses on the pipelines in mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems as a case study. The swept geometry, which includes ducts, cable trays, pipes, and H-beams, was modeled considering standardized dimensions and constraints in MEP systems in building construction. This study also finds how to generate the parametric swept geometry from PCD based on the predefined FT and provide engineers/designers with flexible reverse-engineering capabilities

Demoralization syndrome and its impact factors among cancer patients in China

    No full text
PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the status of demoralization syndrome among cancer patients and explore the key factors influencing demoralization syndrome. METHOD: Cross-sectional study design of cancer patients in Xiamen, China. Patients completed the Mandarin version of the Perceived Social Support Scale, Patient-Reported Outcome Measures, The Anderson Symptom Inventory, and the Demoralization Scale. FINDINGS: 187/199 (94%) of patients completed questionnaires. This study found that almost half of the cancer patients in Xiamen, China experience moderate to high levels of demoralization syndrome. Furthermore, the findings indicated that the family residence (Large Urban:  = 2.73,  = 0.02), average monthly income (b=-3.05,  = 0.03), source of income, religiousness ( = 1.37,  = 0.04) and financial toxicity ( = 3.3,  \u3c 0.001), and social support ( = 1.02;  \u3c 0.001) are the influencing factors of cancer patients\u27 demoralization syndrome. CONCLUSION: These findings emphasize the importance of addressing psychological distress and providing adequate social and financial support for cancer patients to maintain their morale and overall well-being
