Associations between total mercury, trace minerals, and blood health markers in Northwest Atlantic white sharks (Carcharodon carcharias)
The ecology and life-histories of white sharks make this species susceptible to mercury bioaccumulation; however, the health consequences of mercury exposure are understudied. We measured muscle and plasma total mercury (THg), health markers, and trace minerals in Northwest Atlantic white sharks. THg in muscle tissue averaged 10.0 mg/kg dry weight, while THg in blood plasma averaged 533 μg/L. THg levels in plasma and muscle were positively correlated with shark precaudal length (153-419 cm), and THg was bioaccumulated proportionally in muscle and plasma. Nine sharks had selenium:mercury molar ratios in blood plasma \u3e1.0, indicating that for certain individuals the potential protective effects of the trace mineral were diminished, whereas excess selenium may have protected other individuals. No relationships between plasma THg and any trace minerals or health markers were identified. Thus, we found no evidence of negative effects of Hg bioaccumulation, even in sharks with very high THg
Predicting Outcomes of Nanoparticle Attachment by Connecting Atomistic, Interfacial, Particle, and Aggregate Scales
Predicting nanoparticle aggregation and attachment phenomena requires a rigorous understanding of the interplay among crystal structure, particle morphology, surface chemistry, solution conditions, and interparticle forces, yet no comprehensive picture exists. We used an integrated suite of experimental, theoretical, and simulation methods to resolve the effect of solution pH on the aggregation of boehmite nanoplatelets, a case study with important implications for the environmental management of legacy nuclear waste. Real-time observations showed that the particles attach preferentially along the (010) planes at pH 8.5 and the (101) planes at pH 11. To rationalize these results, we established the connection between key physicochemical phenomena across the relevant length scales. Starting from simulations of surface hydroxyl reactivity, we developed an model of the corresponding electrostatic potentials, with subsequent calculations of the resulting driving forces allowing successful prediction of the attachment modes. Finally, we scaled these phenomena to understand the collective structure at the . Our results indicate that facet-specific differences in surface chemistry produce heterogeneous surface charge distributions that are coupled to particle anisotropy and shape-dependent hydrodynamic forces, to play a key role in controlling aggregation behavior
Brief report: risk stratification following curative therapy for stage I NSCLC
INTRODUCTION: Surveillance with computed tomography (CT) imaging following curative treatment of stage I non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is important to identify recurrence or second primary lung cancers (SPLC). The pattern and risks of recurrence following curative therapy and optimal duration of surveillance scans remain unknown. The objective of our study is to assess the pattern of recurrence and development of SPLC to risk stratify patients with stage I NSCLC following curative therapy. METHODS: We identified 261 patients who received curative therapy for stage I NSCLC at Mayo Clinic Florida. Data was collected on clinical and demographic features including gender, smoking history, stage, treatment, histologic subtype, and tumor grade. Kaplan-Meier method was used to evaluate the disease free survival (DFS). Cox proportional hazard model was used to identify risk factors for recurrence. RESULTS: Negative tobacco history and stage IA tumors were associated with significantly prolonged DFS after adjusting for co-variates (p=0.001 and p=0.005). Univariate Cox proportional hazards model identified tobacco history and stage 1B as risk factors for recurrence with unadjusted hazard ratio (HR) of 2.8 and 2.0, respectively. After adjusting for covariates, only stage IB was statistically significant predictor of recurrence with a hazard ratio of 2.1 (Confidence Interval (CI) 95% 1.2-3.6; p=0.007). CONCLUSIONS: An individualized approach that considers risk factors of stage and smoking history may be useful in determining whether to continue annual CT surveillance after five years post curative therapy for stage I NSCLC
Executive function improvement in response to meta-cognitive training in chronic mTBI / PTSD
OBJECTIVE: We tested Goal Management Training (GMT), which has been recommended as an executive training protocol that may improve the deficits in the complex tasks inherent in life role participation experienced by those with chronic mild traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress disease (mTBI/PTSD). We assessed, not only cognitive function, but also life role participation (quality of life). METHODS: We enrolled and treated 14 individuals and administered 10 GMT sessions in-person and provided the use of the Veterans Task Manager (VTM), a Smartphone App, which was designed to serve as a practice-buddy device to ensure translation of in-person learning to independent home and community practice of complex tasks. Pre-/post-treatment primary measure was the NIH Examiner, Unstructured Task. Secondary measures were as follows: Tower of London time to complete (cTOL), Community Reintegration of Service Members (CRIS) three subdomains [Extent of Participation; Limitations; Satisfaction of Life Role Participation (Satisfaction)]. We analyzed pre-post-treatment, -test models to explore change, and generated descriptive statistics to inspect given individual patterns of change across measures. RESULTS: There was statistically significant improvement for the NIH EXAMINER Unstructured Task ( \u3c .02; effect size = .67) and cTOL ( \u3c .01; effect size = .52. There was a statistically significant improvement for two CRIS subdomains: Extent of Participation ( \u3c .01; effect size = .75; Limitations ( \u3c .05; effect size = .59). Individuals varied in their treatment response, across measures. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: In Veterans with mTBI/PTSD in response to GMT and the VTM learning support buddy, there was significant improvement in executive cognition processes, sufficiently robust to produce significant improvement in community life role participation. The individual variations support need for precision neurorehabilitation. The positive results occurred in response to treatment advantages afforded by the content of the combined GMT and the employment of the VTM learning support buddy, with advantages including the following: manualized content of the GMT; incremental complex task difficulty; GMT structure and flexibility to incorporate individualized functional goals; and the VTM capability of ensuring translation of in-person instruction to home and community practice, solidifying newly learned executive cognitive processes. Study results support future study, including a potential randomized controlled trial, the manualized GMT and availability of the VTM to ensure future clinical deployment of treatment, as warranted
Association of cancer information seeking behavior with cigarette smoking and E-cigarette use among U.S. adults by education attainment level: A multi-year cross-sectional analysis from a nationally representative sample in 2017-2020
Little is known about the association of cancer information seeking behavior with cigarette smoking and e-cigarette use. A multi-year cross-sectional analysis using a pooled data of the Health Information National Trends Survey 5, Cycles 1-4 (2017-2020) was conducted. To examine the association of cancer information seeking behavior with current cigarette smoking (currently smoke every day/some days among individuals who smoked 100+ cigarettes in lifetime) and e-cigarette use (currently use every day/some days among lifetime users) in nationally representative U.S. adults, we conducted weighted multiple logistic regression analysis, adjusting for sex, race/ethnicity, age, obese status, depressed mood, cancer diagnosis history, metropolitan status, and survey year.
