    Physiological Responses Regarding Stress and Trauma: The Freeze Response

    Fight-or-flight is a commonly known response to threatening situations, but the freeze response is another defensive mechanism that might arise in such situations. There is also evidence that exposure to trauma can impact physiological reactions when defensive mechanisms are not required, such as freezing in response to non-threatening situations. The current study aimed to replicate and expand upon a limited number of previous studies on the human freeze response by implementing measurements of postural sway, heart rate, and infrared thermography while valenced images were shown to participants. Ninety-two participants were recruited from the University of North Florida and participants were split into groups of low/no, moderate, or high trauma post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptomology. Results of this study provided some evidence of the freeze response with bradycardia occurring during exposure to unpleasant images versus neutral or positively valenced images. There was a pattern of reduced body sway during the negative imagery, but this was not statistically significant, and thermal imaging results were inconclusive. Also, PTSD severity groups interacted significantly with image condition on mean heart rate, with the moderate PTSD group showing bradycardia during negative images compared to other image types. Further research on the freeze response and trauma is required to better understand the mechanisms involved in the defense cascade

    Curriculum Strategy to Increase College Student’s Motivation, Ability and Opportunity Resulting in Reduction in Wasted Food

    Concerns about Food Loss and Waste (FLW) have been rapidly growing worldwide as it came to be understood how the loss of about one-third of the edible food produced globally leads to environmental damage, leads to loss of about USD 1 trillion and keeps food from hungry people. Consumers in developed countries account for the largest majority of food that is wasted. College presents an excellent opportunity to reach young adults as they are developing their identity, self-efficacy and life skills. Utilizing the Motivation-Ability-Opportunity Framework, this research’s overall goal was to find a Curriculum Strategy to engage allied health students in sustainability awareness and practices towards reducing food waste. This quasi-experimental research project tested in an online college Fundamentals of Nutrition class (n = 197) if a series of classroom activities including System and Action Lectures and a Discussion post would result in raised Motivation, Ability, and Opportunity (MAO) scores and in reduced Food Waste. A pre- post-survey of 60 questions asked sociodemographic and Likert scale questions about Food Waste Prevention Practices and questions related to MAO. To test for behavior change, the outcome measure was personal food waste collected for three days pre- and post- curriculum activities. Results showed food waste was significantly lower from pre- to post- at p = .0012. The summed constructs of Motivation and Ability were significantly raised from pre- to post. There was no significant relation found between the sociodemographic variables and the amount of pre-food waste. The only significant connection found between Prevention Practices and pre-food waste was Impulse Buying with higher levels significantly related to higher levels of food waste p = .0011. The intervention lowered food waste and raised Motivation and Ability to reduce food waste

    Sustainable Transportation: Behavioral Analysis of Working-from-Home and Electric Vehicles Adoption

    Sustainable transportation plays a crucial role in mitigating environmental impacts, and this study examines two key aspects, namely working from home (WFH) and the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs), in the context of promoting sustainable practices. The first part of this thesis focuses on how people\u27s perceptions towards working from home have changed as a result of their experiences during COVID-19. To analyze these changes, a random parameter logit (RPL) model is developed based on a nationwide public dataset collected during the pandemic in the United States. Dependent variable of the model is constructed through comparing data from the first and last waves of the survey, and is defined to recognize those who plan to (1) increase, (2) decrease, or (3) keep in the same range their WFH level. The findings provide implications for understanding WFH behavior and guiding policies related to telework. The second part of this thesis focuses on Alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs), and in particular electric vehicles (EVs) adoption behavior through population clustering and subsequent discrete choice models to uncover diverse motivations and barriers for AEVs adoption within different segments of the population. By identifying distinct groups of individuals with similar characteristics and preferences related to EV adoption, the study enables a deeper understanding of the factors influencing their adoption decision. The findings of this section highlight the significance of socio-demographic and economic factors in shaping individuals’ preferences and choices related to sustainable transportation options. In conclusion, this study deepens our understanding of sustainable transportation behaviors and offers valuable insights for policymakers and organizations seeking to foster sustainable practices and reduce carbon emissions. Through its comprehensive approach, embracing analysis of working from home and EV adoption, this research contributes to the advancement of sustainable transportation and urban sustainability goals, providing guidance for developing effective strategies and initiatives

    Exploring Mottness and Electronic Order in Strongly Correlated Vanadate Thin Films

    Mott insulators provide a window into some of the most intensely investigated phenomena in physics. Recent discoveries—including the emergence of high-temperature superconductivity in doped Mott insulators not from the cuprate family of superconductors—have inspired investigation into systems with strong electron-electron interactions. One of these systems is La1-xSrxVO3, in which one end-member, LaVO3, is a Mott insulator and the other, SrVO3, is a strongly correlated metal. Herein, we detail two studies regarding this system. In our oxidation study, we optimized the growth parameters for LaVO3, finding that the ultra-high vacuum technique of molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) was uniquely suited for the growth of this material based on observations made via reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Through multiple growth experiments and observations, we arrived at the ideal condition that promoted the formation of a phase-pure perovskite LaVO3, which we summarize by comparing the result of a film grown under an oxygen partial pressure of 5*10-8 torr with that of one grown with 5*10-7 torr. X-ray diffraction (XRD) data confirmed the presence of the desired crystal structure in the former sample and an undesired second phase with a planar separation of 4.34 Å, which corresponds to V2O5, in the latter. Electronic transport measurements were performed from room temperature to 4 K that confirm an insulating ground state, which is far more pronounced in the former sample. In our Sr-doping study, we grew multiple samples from the La1-xSrxVO3 system from x=0 to x=1 both as random alloys and ordered superlattices, heterostructures with alternating layers of LaVO3 and the other end-member SrVO3. The latter was found to prefer less exposure to oxygen than LaVO3 and required turning off the oxygen beam immediately following growth and cooling down the SrVO3 sample in vacuum, with residual oxygen partial pressure in the 10-9 torr range. This also prompted us to investigate how the electronic/optical properties of LaVO3 depended on the oxygen partial pressure it was exposed to while cooling down after growth, giving us qualitative information on oxygen-vacancy doping of Mott insulating LaVO3. Electronic transport and optical measurements also allowed us to explore the effects of Sr doping on the system and how ordering changes the behavior of doped films. Optical spectroscopy measurements indicated a clear feature that corresponds to a Mott gap of ~1.8 eV in the ideal-oxygen LaVO3 film while the vacancy-doped LaVO3 film as well as the x=0.1 and x=0.2 Sr-doped random alloy films caused this gap-like feature to become weaker and less defined, consistent with what would be expected for a doped Mott insulator
