Assessing erosion improvement in beach sand treated with bioslurry
Over the last 10 years microbially induced calcite precipitation (MICP) has emerged as a possible solution to reduce shoreline erosion. To date, most MICP soil treatments that have been studied involve column injection using a pump. In recent years, MICP application through surface percolation has gained traction as an alternative technique, but data using this technique are limited. More recently, a new treatment recipe/technique was developed, and this technique was termed “bioslurry”. Like most MICP studies research with bioslurry concentrated on the column injection method, and surface percolation has received very limited attention. This paper discusses the treatment of Florida beach sand by surface percolating bioslurry. Researchers experimented with variations of the bioslurry recipe to optimize erosion resistance, which was assessed using a pocket erodometer combined with physical measurements. Some specimens that performed well were further tested using a piston-style erosion rate testing instrument. In addition, treated specimen morphology was preliminarily examined using x-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. Results showed that erosion resistance was maximized when 15% to 25% of the specimens’ pore volumes were filled with bioslurry. Results were surprising in the sense that applying a 1.5 M to 2.5 M cementation solution in combination with the bioslurry treatment produced better results than both 1 M and 4 M solutions. Finally, we note that previous researchers always used a relatively long (i.e., ~12 hour) stir time when preparing bioslurry. Results presented here show that it may be possible to produce comparable data with much shorter stir times (i.e., 1 to 2 hours)
Educator perceptions of giftedness in Florida
Educators, including teachers and administrators, have a responsibility to increase knowledge and achievement for all students. Gifted students who demonstrate increased abilities and proficiencies are often given less attention as schools continue to increase their focus on the lower quartile of students. To address this need, gifted programs are implemented to foster excellence in identified students. However, educational policies pertaining to identification and qualifications for gifted programs can serve as gatekeepers denying students that could potentially benefit from rigorous and enriching programs. In this quantitative study, the perceptions of educators in Florida towards gifted policy were explored through a series of survey items relating to the sentiment, awareness, and perceived impacts of gifted education policy. The results show the support by educators to redefine giftedness and revisit policy. Results also show the importance of educator training on policies regarding gifted education. This research could be used to support the need for additional teacher training regarding gifted education as well as the need to revisit and revise existing conceptions of giftedness in state policy

Investigations into the electronic and magnetic properties of (CrPS4)n layers
2D magnetic semiconductors have become of interest due to their magneto-optical effects in lower dimensionality. More specifically, CrPS4 has gained renewed attention due to its A-type AFM order and air stability prompting analysis and stability studies in its layered forms for use in scalable technology such as spintronic and optoelectronic devices. In this study, we benchmark our approach using the SCAN meta-GGA functional used without U-parameterization on bulk CrPS4 to demonstrate the accuracy of our methodology to use as tools to go beyond current CrPS4 theoretical studies. We examine the 2D electronic nature and optical spectrum for use in experimental analysis. We demonstrate the growth and characterization process of bulk CrPS4 through means of chemical vapor transport and scanning electron microscopy, exhibiting the efficiency of this material for applied cases. We then theoretically model the electronic systems of MnPS4 and FePS4 by doping CrPS4 with Mn and Fe separately to report the changes in state and band gap due to the added valence electrons an effort to add to the transition-metal thiophosphate family as 2D magnetic materials
