Author vs. Audience: Bridging the Gap Between Interpretation and Intent
Since Roland Barthes first published his essay “Le mort de l’auteur” (“The death of the author”) in the 1960s, literary critics have reconsidered the role of the author in the interpretation of media. Barthes and others have argued that the author’s intentions matter little after a work of art is handed off for public consumption, and that art is up for interpretation with the audience playing a greater role in its meaning. Others, however, argue that the author is the ultimate authority on the meaning of their work, and that authorial intent is the most important aspect to consider when examining a piece of media. This paper seeks to resolve the conflict between authorial intent and audience interpretation. The reason we might be tempted to lean on the author for guidance, and which viewpoint we should consider in art analysis were examined. Arguments from the perspectives of both a creator and a consumer were compared. While both views have their strengths and weaknesses, one cannot neatly separate the author from the art when examining their work, and so a combination of both authorial intent and audience interpretation should be taken into consideration when analyzing a piece of media
Effects of Altering Physiologically Relevant Cholesterol Levels and Media Types on Porin Gene Expression in Klebsiella pneumoniae and the Resulting Impact on Antibiotic Resistance
Klebsiella pneumoniae is a Gram-negative, non-motile bacterium belonging to the Enterobacteriaceae family. K. pneumoniae is a rising threat in the clinical setting, as there has been a large increase in the presence of antibiotic resistant isolates. While much research is conducted on laboratory and clinical strains of bacteria, not much is known regarding the impact that human physiology can have on bacterial gene expression, and in response, to antibiotic susceptibility. The goal of this study is to determine if physiologically relevant cholesterol levels and media types impact porin gene expression and antibiotic resistance in K. pneumoniae. To accomplish this, quantitative-PCR and minimum inhibitory concentration assays were utilized. The results of this study indicate that physiologically relevant levels of cholesterol and media types can have several significant effects on porin gene expression and on antibiotic resistance. Firstly, laboratory strain K. pneumoniae was more impacted by changes in cholesterol than clinical strain K. pneumoniae regarding changes to antibiotic susceptibility; however, expression varied largely across all cholesterol concentrations and genes. Secondly, gene expression was downregulated for all six tested genes in the physiologic media compared to the laboratory media; also, the physiologic media often had significantly lower antibiotic susceptibility than the laboratory media. Lastly, it was found that surfactant can have significant effects on both gene expression and antibiotic susceptibility analyses. The results indicate that physiological conditions can impact gene expression and antibiotic susceptibility. Hence, careful consideration should be given to experiments designed to mimic physiological conditions
Examining Predictors of Academic Success among STEM and non-STEM College Students
Nationally, approximately 40% of students drop out of college, with one third of all college freshman dropping out before they enter their second year (Hanson, 2021). Previous research (van der Zanden et al., 2018) has examined predictors of student success that range from institutional variables (e.g., policies, academic supports) to student characteristics (e.g., academic preparation, emotional well-being, motivation, self-evaluation). The primary goal of the present research was to add more insight into the variables that might affect academic success by examining differences in college students’ implicit theories of intelligence, achievement goals, academic self-concept, and academic success at two different levels of academic experience (students in STEM vs. Non-STEM majors). Two hundred and forty participants were recruited from a mid-sized public university in the Southeastern United States and completed a survey which included measures such as the Theories of Intelligence Scale for Adults, Achievement Goal Questionnaire, Academic Self-Concept Scale, and a self-report measure for academic achievement. The results revealed significant differences between STEM and non-STEM majors on the variables of academic self-concept and academic success, in that Non-STEM students reported increased academic self-concept and academic success in comparison to STEM students. No significant differences were found across gender groups. Regardless of major, performance goal orientation and academic self-concept significantly predicted academic success while mindset and mastery goal orientation did not. In addition, major acted as a significant moderator in the relationship between academic self-concept and academic success. Insights and directions for future research are discussed

A presentation about the creation of the Eartha M.M. White VR Experience. The VR narrative biography tells the story of Ms. White\u27s life and all of her accomplishments. It also gives a glimpse into her home and base of operations which is now the Eartha M.M. White Museum located in Jacksonville FL.
This VR experience was made possible by a 2023 Innovative Project Award from the Northeast Florida Information Network (NEFLIN).In cooperation with the Eartha M.M. White Museum, The University of North Florida Thomas G. Carpenter Library Special Collections and University Archives, and the UNF Virtual Learning Center
