Gender equity: The perception of career advancement in higher education

    Get PDF
Women have made many strides in many industries, yet a gendered leadership gap still exists. On many college and university campuses, women are the top degree earners, but they are not represented in executive leadership roles in higher education. The purpose of this quantitative study is to examine university staff perception of career advancement by investigating how independent variables—demographics, challenges and barriers, diversity management, career planning, work-life balance, and pay—are related to the dependent variable—careeradvancement. The study explores the perception of career advancement as a factor that may explain the gendered leadership gap. This study answers the following research questions: 1) What factors predict staff’s perception of career advancement and 2) Does an individual’s gender identity influence perception of career advancement? Statistical analysis for this study included descriptive statistics, standard multiple linear regression and an independent t-test. The results of the study reported pay, diversity management, and career planning as a predictor of the perception of career advancement. Furthermore, the study found that perception of career advancement was not influenced by gender identity. The findings from this study adds to the body of literature on career advancement in higher education, with specific focus on staff’s perception of career advancement

Sleep, sedentary time, and physical activity in heart failure subtypes: Multi-ethnic study of Atherosclerosis (MESA)

    Get PDF
INTRODUCTION: Previous studies have examined the associations between physical activity (PA), sedentary time (ST), and sleep on the risk of heart failure (HF). The primary aim of this study was to examine PA, ST, and sleep quality (SQ) in those diagnosed with preserved ejection fraction HF (HFpEF) and reduced ejection fraction HF (HFrEF). The secondary aim of this study was to examine these relationships in those with and without HF, independent of sub-type. METHODS: The Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA) collected data from 6,814 adults from a diversified cohort who range in age from 45 to 84. Subjects were classified with the following HF subtypes: HFpEF (ejection fraction ≥ 50%) or HFrEF (ejection fraction ≤ 40%). A total of 178 participants reported or were diagnosed with HF (HFpEF=74, HFrEF=69). Continuous PA and ST variables were created from self-reported minutes per week and SQ was reported via questionnaire. RESULTS: No significant differences were found when examining the associations of ST and SQ between HF sub-types. However, an association of PA between subtypes was found to be significant. Those with HFrEF reported 401 (P CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that PA significantly differs between HF subtypes. When examining those with and without HF, those with HF reported significantly less TPAV, light-, moderate-, and vigorous-intensity PA, and significantly more ST. Future studies with greater power and objectively measured PA, ST, and SQ data may improve both internal and external validity of HF research

Infusing universal design for learning with trauma-informed educational practice: What early childhood personnel think and how they\u27ll pull it off

    Get PDF
This research recruited ten early childhood personnel within a public elementary school and attempted to gain insight into their beliefs and attitudes directly related to the principles of universal design for learning and the tenets of trauma-informed educational practice. Through this qualitative study, the researcher posited the importance of explicit professional learning and a supportive and openly communicative school environment to support the implementation of a combined trauma-informed universal design for learning (Ti-UDL) framework. Such a model has implications not only impacting personnel and student relationships, but those occurring amongst school-wide personnel of all levels. This research employed multiple phases, including an introductory survey (Attitudes and Beliefs about Trauma – ABaT), individually conducted semi-structured interviews, a synchronous professional learning session on UDL and TIEP within schools, journal writing, and a student-facing classroom observation for those participants primarily assigned to the classroom setting. Lastly, this research will review recommendations for the future and alterations supported by the researcher to support the successful replication and generalization of this study
