    Factors influencing household travel behavior and trip distances in Florida: A rural vs. urban perspective

    This thesis investigates disparities in travel behaviors between rural and urban populations in the United States, with a specific focus on Florida. Leveraging data from the 2017 National Household Travel Survey (NHTS), the study examines demographic factors such as age, income, and household size, and their influence on travel patterns. By employing statistical methods including Poisson and negative binomial regression models, the research explores two key variables: the frequency of trips made per day and the average trip distance in miles. These models are particularly effective in handling overdispersion in count data, ensuring a robust analysis of travel behaviors across diverse populations. The study highlights differences in transportation needs and challenges faced by urban and rural residents. Rural areas, often characterized by sparse populations and limited public transportation infrastructure, contrast sharply with urban centers, where higher population densities and advanced transit networks influence travel modes and patterns. Special attention is given to elderly individuals and low-income groups, who often experience unique mobility barriers. Findings reveal that demographic variables significantly impact travel frequency and distance. For instance, lower-income and elderly populations in rural areas are less likely to rely on private vehicles and face greater accessibility challenges. This research provides actionable insights for policymakers and transportation planners, emphasizing the importance of equitable and sustainable transportation policies. Recommendations include improving public transit in underserved areas, expanding pedestrian-friendly infrastructure, and addressing barriers to mobility for disadvantaged groups. By bridging the gap between demographic research and transportation policy, this thesis aims to enhance mobility, inclusivity, and sustainability in urban and rural transportation systems. These findings offer a framework for targeted interventions that support diverse populations, fostering a more equitable and efficient transportation network while contributing to broader societal goals of sustainable development

    Infection of the subtropical seagrass Thalassia testudinum Banks ex König by pathogenic Labyrinthula sp. was found to induce lesion progression, alterations to the host’s oxidative metabolism, and production of defense metabolites over the early stages of infection (monitored over a 72-hr time course). By 48-hrs post-infection, host oxygen consumption, internal reactive oxygen concentrations, and caspase-3 proteolytic activity reached their highest levels. The formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and nitric oxide (NO) were detected in T. testudinum lesions by use of redox-sensitive probes/substrates and fluorescent imaging. To our knowledge, this work represents the first time NO has been detected in a marine angiosperm within the context of a plant-pathogen interaction. Hydrogen peroxide production and lesion expansion were highly regulated in the presence of diphenyleneiodonium, catalase, and carboxy-PTIO, suggesting crosstalk between ROS and NO activity. Using a nontargeted metabolomics approach, succinic acid, 3-phenylpropionic acid, and methyl p-coumarate concentrations were found to significantly increase following Labyrinthula sp. infection. The generation of characteristic seagrass wasting disease lesions likely results from cell death via the host’s hypersensitive response (HR) as well as direct degradation of tissue by the pathogen. These results highlight the existence of a co-evolutionary arms race between seagrasses and Labyrinthula sp. that shape the ecology and evolution of seagrass wasting disease

    Florida queer K12 teachers perceptions of school climate under “don’t say gay”

    Florida\u27s newest legislation leaves many Florida queer teachers feeling marginalized and unprotected in the classroom (Block, 2022). The “Parental Rights in Education” Bill (FL HB 1557 and FL HB 1069), infamously renamed “Don’t Say Gay”, was created ostensibly to help protect parental rights and choices in education. The new law prohibits the discussion of gender identity and sexual orientation in kindergarten through twelfth grade classrooms. “Don’t Say Gay” provides vague guidelines for queer teachers on approaching topics like sexual orientation and gender identity. Despite the evidence that queer teachers who are open and honest about their identity often find themselves more successful in the classroom (Wright, 2010), queer teachers fear and worry about job security because of this law (Block, 2022). There is a growing need for supportive queer practices within schools (GLSEN, 2021; Lee, 2020). Queer students are at a higher risk of depression, suicidal ideation, bullying, and targeted physical and verbal abuse (GLSEN, 2021). However, few studies have been conducted on how queer K-12 educators view their work climate. This qualitative, phenomenological study used document analysis and focus group interviews to understand how queer teachers in Florida—arguably an epicenter of a far-right push to silence and marginalize LBGTQ students and educators—are viewing school climate. The analytical framework helped me examine the “Don’t Say Gay” policy through a multi-tiered lens of context, text, and consequences to understand the relationship between policy and impacts. I found that the “Don’t Say Gay” laws focus on reinforcing parental rights, heterosexual lifestyles, and gender binary roles. Queer teachers are feeling trapped and targeted by the new laws and view school climate as chilly and unwelcoming. However, some teachers are willing to fight back against these policies

    Hypothetical Mistakes: Hedging Wrong Answers with Conditional Language.

    This article analyzes American high school students hedging incorrect responses to teacher-initiated questions in IRE (Initiation-Response-Evaluation) format using conditional language and hypotheticals in ways that facilitate an affiliative stance between students and their teacher. Scholarship on hedging details its use to approximate responses as a shield against doubt and criticism or as collaborative communication, whereas stance is a grammatically encompassed expression of attitudes related to the content of a message. This study brings together theories of stance, hedging, and conditional language use to outline how errors can be a student-initiated pedagogical tool to deepen explanations and engagement. To broaden understanding of the form and function of both incorrect answers and hedging as a structure expanding traditional IRE turntaking for managing classroom discourse, this article outlines seven examples total where students hedge what they know to be incorrect answers drawn from recordings made in forty, fifty-minute high school level Latin lessons over the 2019–2020 academic year.
