JOE BROOKS IS 
GOLF RULER
A new champion is crowned.
Joe D. Brooks is the new cham- 
pion golfer of the Lincoln Golf and 
Country club, and is the proud pos- 
sessor of the coveted S. H. Hart, 
Sr., trophy.
He finished in the top place Sat- 
urday at the club where once each 
year golfers there compete for the 
club honor and the Hart cup. Play 
was held the past three Saturdays, 
and coming in with the lowest 
medal score in the 54-hole test was 
the young assistant at the Durkee- 
ville housing colony here.
In second place was J. Leonard 
Lewis, Afro-American Life Insur- 
ance company official and an at- 
torney here, and as a reward for 
his stellar play goes the A. L. 
Lewis trophy, another beautiful cup 
held each year by the runner-up 
to the champion. The Hart cup 
was held the past year by Kibbie 
Payne, former letter-carrier here, 
and now a resident of New York 
City. The Lewis cup was held last 
year by Attorney Lewis, grandson 
of the donor.
Finishing in third place this 
year was Dr. R. L. Brown, holder 
of the club title and the Hart cup 
won three times, and coming in fourth 
was Dr. C. Frederick Duncan, like
Brown, a prominent medical 
of this city.

Priest-Lawyer
The Rev. Father Thomas J. Brophy, 
Catholic priest, recently was admitted 
to the Florida bar. He was one of 
the four successful candidates of 
this county who passed the State 
bar examination.
Rev. Father Brophy is a teacher 
of psychology and instructor of 
pharmaceutical chemistry at St. Vin­
cent’s Hospital and resident rector 
of St. Pius Colored Mission, Lee and 
State Streets.
He is a native of Philadelphia and 
was educated at Epiphany College, 
Walbrook, Md. He made his higher 
studies of philosophy and theology 
at St. Joseph’s Seminary, Baltimore. 
He also is a graduate of Milton Uni­
versity. On June 15, 1922, he was 
ordained to the priesthood at the 
Catholic University, Washington, D. C
Father Brophy received his LLB 
degree from the Jacksonville Law 
School, of which William J. Porter 
is dean.
