Communicating 
Increased Salinity in 
the St. Johns River
I began this project by collaborating with the 
other DHI Faculty Fellow in our grant, Dr. Scott 
Jones of UNF’s Biology Department. Dr. Jones 
is a wetland ecologist, and we discussed what 
was a) most important for public audiences to 
learn about right now and b) what was also 
difficult to see or visualize.
With this criteria in mind, we chose to educate 
public audiences about saltwater intrusion in the 
St. Johns River. From there, we chose to include 
charismatic fauna to engage public audiences.
I interviewed Dr. Quincey Adams and Dr. Adam 
Rosenblatt, who study dolphins and alligators 
respectively. I interviewed them for specific 
stories about individual animal traits and how 
increased salinity was affecting the species.
Why AR?
Considering how users may respond to AR app 
design is particularly timely for environmental 
communication because it can help users see or 
visualize otherwise difficult to imagine 
experiences or information (Dunleavy, 2014).
Fauville et al. (2020) highlight the difficulties of 
environmental communication, including, 
incorporating first-hand experiences, 
experimenting in specific environments, 
providing visuals for typically imperceivable 
phenomenon, bridging the spatial and temporal 
distance between people and places. 
I developed the app in Unity, using assets that 
were purchased, free assets, and editing code. 
Without a background in coding, I relied on free 
YouTube tutorials and message boards. Coding 
communities are generally very supportive.
Designing visuals and interaction pulled from 
my previous research on affect and AR user 
experience research. I was especially conscious 
of how touch and experience were taught and 
modeled.
Dev and DesignRPG-Informed Dialogue
This app is designed for public audiences in Northeast 
Florida, which includes people who may be skeptical 
about changes in rivers and oceans, especially as it may 
relate to sea level rise and our changing climate. 
Audiences may also be skeptical about individuality and 
characteristics of animals.
Users always have an option to reply with skepticism in 
the app, which doesn’t change what information is 
explained but how information is explained. When users 
choose the skeptical reply, the explanations acknowledge 
the benefit of skepticism and why their apprehension may 
be valid. When users choose the other response, which is 
usually enthusiastic, the NPC narrator shares in their 
enthusiasm as they explain information.
Looking Forward
This first version of WildAR Northeast 
Florida can stand alone as an educational 
app, but I hope to also use it for user 
experience (UX) research.
In UX testing, I would be looking for 
general usability information to guide AR 
app design as well as any change in affect 
to guide AR environmental communication. 
Additionally, I would like to know how 
effective the dialogue options were in 
creating an experience that invited learning 
for people with different attitudes towards 
science and animal studies.
