Strategic Counter Measures to Terrorism and Extremism in Pakistan and Insights from Home Land Security: A Need for the Enactment of Pakistan\u27s National Counter Terrorism Department

    No full text
This research scrutinizes the challenges faced by Pakistan\u27s law enforcement agencies in effectively countering the escalating threats of terrorism and extremism. It identifies both the manifestations and root causes of these challenges, underscoring the imperative need for a refined legislative framework. This article proposes the enactment of a "National Counter Terrorism Department Act" designed to enhance the nation\u27s control mechanisms, curtail the surge of extremist tendencies, and uphold the rule of law. Drawing from a comparative analysis of various enforcement strategies in Pakistan, this paper suggests that the existing "National Counter Terrorism Authority Act, 2013" requires legislative intervention. While it lays down comprehensive guidelines, its operational efficiency is marred by the absence of a singular unified department, inadequate service structures, and constrained powers. By assimilating insights from the Department of Homeland Security with its mandate vis-à-vis model organizational websites, books, journals, acts of various law enforcement agencies, scholarly articles and newspaper articles, the paper underlines the ineffectiveness of the National Counter Terrorism Authority Act, 2013, in its current form. It has been recommended that the envisioned "National Counter Terrorism Department Act" would not only bolster Pakistan\u27s counterterrorism capabilities, but it will also ensure a standardized, cohesive approach nationwide. Full text link
This study examined the significance of general insurance operations on real sector performance in Nigeria. The lack of commitment to policies that could strengthen the macro-economic environment to allow for viable insurance industry to thrive is a major obstacle which adversely affect real sector performance. Secondary data and multiple regression method were used in the study. The effect of general insurance was measured through five different proxies such as general insurance penetration, general insurance premiums, general insurance investment and general insurance claims paid and real sector output. Time series data for the period 2000-2021 (21 years) were collated through the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) statistical bulletin. The data was analyzed using line graph trend and multiple linear regression method. The findings of the study revealed that general insurance operations had a positive and substantial effect on real sector output in Nigeria during the period under study. The study recommends among others that insurance companies should offer products that are affordable to all class of individuals and businesses which would in turn, help boost insurance business and allow for wider market penetration. More awareness about the existence of insurance should be created, this will help expand the industry.   References Adebisi,W. (2006). Principles and Practice of Insurance (1st ed.). Social Media & Body Image: A Study of a Public Sector University in Islamabad

This study delves into the profound impact of social media on body image perceptions and overall dissatisfaction among young adults at Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad. In today\u27s digital age, social media pervades the lives of young people, shaping their self-perceptions and influencing their social interactions. This research aims to understand how the constant exposure to curated and often idealized images on social media platforms contributes to the development of unrealistic body standards, fostering feelings of inadequacy and pressure to conform to societal beauty ideals. Employing a quantitative research approach, the study focused on a sample of 200 undergraduate and postgraduate students aged 18 to 30 years. Data collection utilized systematic sampling techniques and involved the administration of questionnaires via Google Forms. The study drew upon Social Comparison Theory to understand how individuals evaluate their own appearance by comparing themselves to the seemingly flawless images and physiques presented on social media platforms. Data analysis was conducted using IBM SPSS Statistics. The findings revealed a significant correlation between social media usage and body image dissatisfaction among young adults. Frequent comparisons with idealized images of influencers and celebrities on social media platforms were found to be a major contributor to negative body image perceptions, leading to a range of negative emotional and psychological outcomes, including anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. These findings underscore the urgent need for interventions that address the detrimental effects of social media on young adults\u27 mental health. This may include the development and implementation of comprehensive media literacy programs designed to equip young people with the critical thinking skills necessary to navigate the complexities of the digital world and resist the pressures to conform to unrealistic beauty standards. Furthermore, fostering a more inclusive and diverse representation of body images on social media platforms is crucial to promoting healthier body image perceptions and enhancing the overall well-being of young adults in the digital age. Full text link
This study explores the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and narrative medicine in health education for rehabilitation therapy, aiming to achieve more personalized and comprehensive rehabilitation support. The research encompasses three key aspects: 1) Leveraging machine learning to analyze patient data and deliver customized health guidance; employing natural language processing to enhance patient-physician communication and tailor educational content. 2) Integrating patients\u27 personal narratives into health education design to deepen empathy and relevance. 3) Combining virtual reality and smart devices to craft immersive, interactive learning experiences, fostering heightened patient engagement and motivation. The findings underscore that integrating AI and narrative medicine significantly enhances the relevance and effectiveness of health education, bolstering patients\u27 self-management capabilities, mental well-being, and comprehensive functional recovery, thereby presenting innovative prospects for clinical rehabilitation practice. In conclusion, the innovative amalgamation of AI and narrative medicine holds promise for delivering more individualized rehabilitation support with favorable clinical implications. Future research endeavors should focus on exploring novel rehabilitation models that synergize technological advancements with humanistic approaches to perpetually transform health education. Shifting Global Power: A Comparative Analysis of Soft Power in the US and China

his article uses soft power, a country\u27s capacity to influence others by attraction as opposed to coercion, to examine how the dynamics of global power are changing. China\u27s strategic use of soft power shows it is making substantial progress towards becoming another superpower, perhaps pushing the international order towards a bipolar system, even while the United States remains the only hegemon in the existing unipolar world order. China\u27s ability to cultivate a more appealing image on the international scene is credited with its success. This is made possible by its recently acquired economic prosperity, which enables large-scale investments in international aid and infrastructure projects funded by programmes like the Belt and Road Initiative. Furthermore, China tends to present a more "friendly" foreign policy than the US, emphasising economic alliances rather than intervening militarily. On the other hand, the US seems to be losing ground as the only superpower. Its reputation has been damaged by a number of foreign policy choices, which have also undermined confidence among allies and the global community. Accusations of vaccine hoarding, the perceived shortcomings of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the decision to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement, and a perceived deficiency in leadership during the COVID-19 epidemic are a few of them. Due to these acts, the US is now a less desirable partner on the international scene, which could reduce its soft power and influence. References Anand, A. (2022). A Critical Analysis of Infrastructure Facilities for Students of Madaris in Bahawalnagar District

This study addresses the significant gap in understanding the state of infrastructure facilities in Madaris (religious schools) in the Bahawalnagar District of Pakistan. While the importance of educational infrastructure in shaping student outcomes is well established, research focusing specifically on Madaris is limited. This study aims to assess the current infrastructure, identify challenges faced by these institutions, examine the impact of infrastructure on academic performance and personality development, and propose strategies for improvement. Using a quantitative approach, the study targeted 10 purposively selected Madaris, including 8 male and 2 female institutions providing residential facilities and Dars-e-Nizami courses. Using pre-tested questionnaires, a sample of one hundred students (eighty male, twenty female) were chosen and the researcher gathered data personally via face-to--face interaction. SPSS was used for the data analysis applying descriptive and inferential statistical methods. The results exposed notable shortcomings in categories including ventilation, sanitation, energy, and security in terms of infrastructure. The learning environment was shown to be hampered by poor access to basic facilities including drinking water and insufficient classroom space. Furthermore, influencing students\u27 academic experiences were the absence of contemporary teaching resources including internet connection and AV aids. One critical challenge was also found to be security systems. Safety measures, student protection, and strengthening basic infrastructure such as classroom facilities were identified as major gaps in school supervision and need immediate reforms of infrastructure classical upgrades. The findings suggest that the personalization and general educational experiences of the students attending Madaris Centres are highly dependent on the investments made on these areas, which suggests that the politicians need to focus on infrastructural development of these institutions first. Full text link
All facets of our lives and activities have been significantly impacted by the introduction of clever new technology, smart mobile connections, and online services. The world around us is also greatly impacted by this development. In the modern world, libraries and library services are very influential. The current study\u27s objective is to investigate how Internet of Things, a novel technology, is used in libraries and educational facilities. Librarians should be aware of the various features of IOT in libraries and services since new technologies have raised user expectations from library services. They should also receive training on user behavior and IOT security concerns in libraries. Libraries and their services will continue to be impacted by the IOT in a variety of ways, including construction, collection management, instruction, data security, information literacy, and more. This study also aims to familiarize readers with emerging IOT technologies that libraries might employ to enhance user satisfaction and provide better services. An Investigation into Sexual and Reproductive Health Awareness among Adolescent Girls in Kohalpur Municipality Banke, Nepal

This research paper aimed to examine the level of knowledge and attitude of adolescent girls and their parents regarding sexual and reproductive health education. The study collected primary data from adolescent girls aged 16-19 years and their parents in Kohalpur municipality Banke, Nepal. The respondents were asked about their knowledge of sexual and reproductive health (SRH). Out of 219 respondents, only 23 girls (10.50 percent) reported having knowledge of SRH. Most of the respondents (69.57 percent) obtained information on SRH from school or their teachers, and 82.64 percent of the respondents had knowledge about adolescence. Although all respondents had heard about menstruation, only 40.64 percent had knowledge about sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and 41.56 percent had knowledge about family planning. Furthermore, only 26.04 percent of the total respondents agreed that SRH education could protect against STIs, HIV, and AIDS. 69.86 percent of the respondents believed that the best age for marriage is 20-24 years, and 57.07 percent of the respondents thought that SRH education is necessary for adolescent girls. Only 3.65 percent of the total respondents shared their SRH-related problems with their parents, while almost half of them shared their problems with their friends. None of the respondents reported having engaged in sexual activity. The study found that adolescent girls in Kohalpur Municipality Banke have limited knowledge about SRH, and their sources of information are inadequate. Consequently, they are vulnerable during this sensitive phase of their lives. The study recommends that the community, educational institutions, and other stakeholders take urgent measures to improve the condition of adolescent girls concerning sexual and reproductive health.
