    BARRIERS TO ICT DEPLOYMENT IN THE NIGERIAN REAL ESTATE PRACTICE

    The introduction of computer and the advent of internet has changed how man lives in the modern world. The versatility of ICT has led to its adoption in real estate services as property market is imperfect in nature. This makes information about the property not to be well disseminated. This study seeks to investigate the barriers to the deployment of ICT in Nigerian real estate practice. Lagos state was chosen as the case study and delineated based on locational pattern to ascertain the central business districts where the agglomeration of the professional practice of real estate lies. Questionnaires were administered to 172 real estate firms and516 patrons of the firms within the metropolis. The stratified random and snowballing sampling technique was adopted for questionnaire administration on the population respectively. The data collected was analyzed using the weighted mean score and one sample t-test analysis. Findings revealed that the most salient barrier to the deployment of ICT in real estate practice is the rapid changes in ICT technologies. Recommendations were that practitioners should improve their learning culture on the use all forms of ICT software for real estate practice in the bid to build their level of expertise and also put the profession on a global scale amongits contemporaries.&nbsp

    ALTERNATIVE MEDICINAL PLANTS FROM PARI DISTRICT, KAURU LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF KADUNA STATE

    An ethno-medicinal survey was carried out in October, 2017 to collate information on the medicinal plants used by the Chawai people of Kauru Local Government Area of Kaduna State.A 10m x 10m quadrat size was used to sample 8 plots, 200 metres apart. Oral interviews were conducted with Elders, Alternative Medicinal Practitioners, Hunters and women. Seventy-two (62) plant species were recorded and distributed across 31 families out of which 68 were used for alternative medicinal purposes and distributed according to the following families:Mimosoideae (12.90%),Anacardiaceae (9.68%), Caesalpinodeae (8.06%), Euphorbiaceae (8.06%), while Apocynaceae, Moraceae, Fabaceae and Rubiaceae showed (4.84%) each. The study revealed that the plant part mostly used are the roots when compared to the other parts of the plant (barks, leaves, stems, roots, fruits, seeds,latex and flowers). Latex and flowers were amongst the least parts used. There is the urgent need for more documentation of the traditional ethno-medicinal knowledge

    Environmental and hygienic concerns associated with traditional fish smoking structures restrict the sale and consumption of smoked products to local markets. This study evaluated the performance of three(improved kiln oven (IKO), mud-type ovens (MTO) and extended drum ovens (EDO)) locally available Biofuelledfish smoking structures and proposed modifications to improve product quality.Three groups of prepared freshwater catfish (Clarias gariepinus) with average live weights of 1.93 kg±46 g, 1.92 kg±50 g and 1.86 kg±50 g was used as test samples.     Cluster of Differentiation 4, Serum Malondialdehyde and Immunoglobulin M concentrations in ageing of apparently healthy humans in Keffi, Nigeria

    This study evaluated blood samples of 150 adults of age range 30-79 years with 96 males and 54 females on immunology indices; malondialdehyde (MDA), immunoglobin M (IgM) and cluster of differentiation 4 (CD+ 4). Serum MDA concentration significantly (p<0.05) increased with age. Serum MDA concentration of the males were significantly higher than the females. It indicates that the healthy ageing adult’s antioxidant/oxidant balance is compromised. Thus, the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and ROS clearance has been disturbed and may result in oxidative damage to macromolecules in the cells. In all ages and gender, IgM antibodies to H. pylori was significantly (p<0.05) different and it increased with age. Study showed that IgM antibodies to H.     DEVELOPMENT OF INFRARED-BASED LOW COST BIDIRECTIONAL COUNTER

    The aim of this research was the development of low cost infrared-based bidirectional counting system that could be deployed to take the count of people entering/exiting a given space. People counting system in crowded places is a practical application that can be approached via varieties of ways, which vary in the level of complexity. The control circuit of the developed device was built around AT89C52 microcontroller, JK flipflop and operational amplifier as comparator. The sensor network is made of two pairs of infrared transmitter and receiver circuit. Light emitting diode was used as the transmitter while a phototransistor is utilized as the receiver. Provision was made for visual display of the count through the use of seven-segment display module. As counting is not usually limited to the entry/exit point of a place, the developed bidirectional counter could as well be deployed in a wide range of applications that provide information for management of the volume and flow into a location. This paper describes the relevance of this design in meeting the expectations for safety and security in the society.&nbsp

    INVESTIGATION OF CORROSION INHIBITION OF MILD STEEL IN 0.5 M HCL WITH AZADIRACTHAINDICA AND SPONDIAMOMBIN

    The corrosion behaviour of mild steel in 0.5 M HCl solution in the presence of Azadiracthaindica and Spondiamombin (AS) was investigated using potentiodynamic polarization and weight loss techniques. Pulverized barks of 60 g of each plant were soaked in 1500 ml, 0.5 M HCl for 48 hours, filtered and mixed in the ratio of 1:1 giving a concentration of 400 g/L (serving as 100 % concentration). The AS mixture was then diluted to 20, 40, 60 and 80% (80, 160, 240 and 320 g/L). The weight loss experiment was carried out for 192 hours at ambient temperature (25oC) and corrodant solution without AS served as the control. Potentiodynamic polarization study was carried out using a device called AutolabPotentiostatGalvanostat (PGSTAT101) in the potential range of ±1.5v versus corrosion potential at a scan rate of 0.005 ms-1. The results obtained showed that corrosion rate reduced in the presence of all the concentrations of AS extract investigated. Highest inhibition efficiency of 99.6% obtained was for the polarization measurement why the highest obtained for gravimetric study was 75.39%. Gibb’s free energy of -3.859 kJ mol-1 was obtained, indicating physisorption and the correlation coefficient was 0.996. The study showed that AS was a very good corrosion inhibitor of mild steel in 0.5 M HCl acid.&nbsp

    SEISMIC STRATIGRAPHIC AND STRUCTURAL CHARACTERIZATION OF XY-1 (TOMBOY) FIELD, OFFSHORE WESTERN NIGER DELTA, NIGERIA

    The focal aim of the study is to map the structures in the study area using seismic characterization methodology. Key stratal terminations such as onlaps, toplaps and erosional unconformities (or truncations) were recognized. Nine surface boundaries, namely: four maximum flooding surfaces and five sequence boundaries were detected as peaks and troughs of the seismic onsets, respectively. The maximum flooding surfaces and the sequence boundaries depths were converted to time in milliseconds using check shot data. The converted time represents two-way travel time. Accordingly, the wireline logs were effectively tied to the seismic lines for better stratigraphic interpretation. The structural style of the field is characterized by two systems of antithetic and growth faults. On the seismic lines, shale structures were recognized as zones of chaotic or transparent seismic reflection

    Assessment of Industrial Water Pollution Level in Awun River Basin, North Central Nigeria

    Water quality degradation is a major problem in watershed. Physicochemical and bacteriological tests were carried out on water samples within the Awun basin to determine the level of pollution. Three samples were taken from three different locations by random sampling along the river channels and were analysed in the Laboratory. The pH, Turbidity, colour conductance, ionic constituents, heavy metals, bacteriological and other water parameters tests were conducted. Results showed that Lead and Zinc were major parameters higher than the maximum acceptable value of Nigerian FEPA (Federal Environmental Protection Agency) and the WHO(World Health Organization) for effluent discharge into surface water. Statistical analysis showed no significant difference. It was recommended that the river water should be treated before being used for domestic purpose

    DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF A MOTORISED JUICE EXTRACTOR

    A motorized jul/nice extractor was designed, fabricated and evaluated with orange, pineapple and golden melon fruits. The major components of the extractor included the hopper, slicing chamber, extracting chamber, frame and outlets for juice and pulp. The machine was powered by a 2 h.p. electric motor. The results of the evaluation showed a fruit yield of 38.00, 51.43 and 39.67% for orange, pineapple and golden melon respectively and extraction efficiency of 65.47, 83.94 and 53.17% for the three fruits respectively while the juice extraction loss was 6, 9 and 28% respectively for the three fruits. The cost of producing the machine is N 58,130 (USD 161.47) which makes it affordable to small scale fruit juice producer
