'Super-size caricature: Thomas Rowlandson'sPlace des Victoiresat the Society of Artists in 1783'

    No full text
This article re-examines an ambitious caricature of the French that Thomas Rowlandson (1757–1827) exhibited in London in 1783. Recent research has confirmed that the artist undertook training at the Académie Royale in Paris while still a student at the Royal Academy in London. In the following essay, I argue that this double professional route into comic art can be related to his conception of thePlace des Victoires. The broader context for this discussion is provided by several ideas that have been important to recent histories of British art, notably the rise of the public exhibition and the vigorous market for caricature prints. As what I call a “super-size” caricature, the drawing highlights how comic art could take on dimensions and appearances that suited exhibition contexts

E-Learning: Implications for Higher Education Assessment Strategy

    No full text
The digital divide has significantly increased regardless of measures taken by government bodies to address the growing exclusion of certain groups within society which have limited access to Information Technology. The statement highlighted above clearly indicates that students who are from challenging areas are more inclined to move amongst other areas of society. If individuals are declined from using the technology available to them - these groups are therefore being alienated from the changing technology environment and also their input into societal issues and learning environments as a whole. It is emphasized by Castells places great emphasis on the constructs of inequality throughout society [1]. The paper highlights the varying and rather tumultuous nature of the technology environment within higher education. Over the years the growth of higher education and the governmental changes within the education system have far from alleviated the nature of student involvement in the system. This paper additionally wants to emphasise the limitations within the educational system in terms of the use of the technology applied through learning

Altered urothelial ATP signaling in a major subset of human overactive bladder patients with pyuria

Overactive Bladder (OAB) is an idiopathic condition, characterized by urgency, urinary frequency, and urgency incontinence, in the absence of routinely traceable urinary infection. We have described microscopic pyuria (≥10 wbc/μl) in patients suffering from the worst symptoms. It is established that inflammation is associated with increased ATP release from epithelial cells, and extracellular ATP originating from the urothelium following increased hydrostatic pressure is a mediator of bladder sensation. Here, using bladder biopsy samples, we have investigated urothelial ATP signaling in OAB patients with microscopic pyuria. Basal, but not stretch-evoked, release of ATP was significantly greater from the urothelium of OAB patients with pyuria than from non-OAB patients or OAB patients without pyuria (<10 wbc/μl). Basal ATP release from the urothelium of OAB patients with pyuria was inhibited by the P2 receptor antagonist suramin and abolished by the hemichannel blocker carbenoxolone, which differed from stretch-activated ATP release. Altered P2 receptor expression was evident in the urothelium from pyuric OAB patients. Furthermore, intracellular bacteria were visualized in shed urothelial cells from ∼80% of OAB patients with pyuria. These data suggest that increased ATP release from the urothelium, involving bacterial colonization, may play a role in the heightened symptoms associated with pyuric OAB patients
