Creation of a NFC reading system for university attendance monitoring with accessibility considerations for powered wheelchair users
This paper considers the hardware and software implementation of a Near-Field Communication (NFC) reading system which was used to collect student attendance information in a two-year study with University Engineering students. Learning analytics has become popular with an increase in attendance monitoring activity across the higher education sector. This paper presents a bespoke in-house attendance monitoring system and has been created in the School of Engineering to conduct research to consider the benefits of such a system for staff and students. The paper highlights some of the technical decisions and it challenges faced during the implementation of the trial system and considers the accessibility of the system for powered wheelchair users. Electronic card reader hardware was purchased and installed in selected rooms in the University as part of a faculty of technology learning and teaching grant looking at Attendance monitoring. The study has concluded that the introduction of an electronic card reader system at the University of Portsmouth would not cause unacceptable delays for students entering classrooms and would contribute positively to student experience, however accessibility measures would need to be put in place to enable powered wheelchair users to engage with the system at all locations across the University premises
Selecting a discrete multiple criteria decision making method for Boeing to rank four global market regions
This work describes the creation of a new method to choose a suitable Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) method for a Boeing strategic decision. The decision involved four global market regions being ranked based on their market attractiveness and competitive strength when risk and uncertainty were anticipated. Following an analysis of MCDM problems and methods, a new organized approach was created to provide a decision maker with a sub-group of suitable MCDM methods. Sensitivity analysis was used to investigate the robustness of the outputs from the various candidate methods. A MCDM method is recommended automatically. The recommended candidate method is the one that provided the most robust output (solution to the problem). Only methods that deal with a discrete set of choices were considered. In the Boeing strategic decision presented in this paper, two MCDM methods were compared and a recommendation was made after calculating the minimum percentage change in performance measures and criteria weights required to change the ranking of any two alternatives. An MCDM method was recommended based on a compromise between the minimum percentage change that was required in the inputs to change the ranking of alternatives. Some propositions are discussed based on general scenarios concerning MCDM problems

An intelligent monitoring system for a crude oil distillation column
This paper describes an intelligent monitoring system for a crude oil distillation column. It proposes the use of multiple sensors to create a systematic way of monitoring, refining and detecting faults and anomalies. There can be sensor redundancy in a refinery and this research uses that redundancy for a crude distillation column to provide enough data and information to apply systemic methods and thinking and to create an intelligent monitoring system. The system uses real-time data from combinations of sensors used to observe crude refining to provide new information that would not be available from individual sensors. As an example, some sensor combinations are described for surveillance, to eliminate anomalies, and to improve monitoring with some intelligence
Refugees, Patriotism, and Hogarth’s The Gate of Calais (1748)
The subject of this paper is a famous satirical painting of the French by the British painter William Hogarth (1697–1764). Hogarth’s The Gate of Calais has long proved to be an effective conduit for national sentiment. Deploying an inter-disciplinary analysis, the paper argues that Hogarth’s satire draws on a cultural heritage that originated within French refugee communities writing to discredit politics ‘back home’. Understood from this perspective, the painting demonstrates how the cultural materials of a French ethnic minority can become woven into the meta-narrative about Britishness and then, in turn, become generative of meaning for broader communities of transnationalized Protestants, not just for the British themselves
Critical Race Theory. Impact on Black Minority Ethnic Students within Higher Education
This book is an attempt to address the notion of Critical Race Theory (CRT) and the underlying parallels with the experiences of Black Minority Ethnic Students (BMEs) under the guise of Widening Participation policies and practices within the realms of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). The book attempts to explore and compare the post entry academic and social inclusion concepts for BME non-traditional students. The author carried out an extensive level of investigation through her PhD titled “Critical Race Theory A Phenomenological Approach to Black Minority Ethnic Students within Higher Education Institutions”. Moreover, the author within the PhD work identified the habitus structuring models and the academic and social constraints applied within HEIs. This book attempts to illustrate the impact of CRT upon the recruitment, retention, race and racism, learning and teaching themes which are embedded within HEIs. Themes at macro level, meso and micro levels are investigated
