    Facial recognition software for identification of powered wheelchair users

    The research presented in this paper investigates the use of facial recognition software as a potential system to identify powered wheelchair users. Facial recognition offers advantages over other biometric systems where wheelchair users have disabilities. Facial recognition systems scan an image or video feed for a face, and compare the detected face to previously detected data. This paper reviews the software development kits and the libraries available for creating such as systems and discusses the technologies chosen to create a prototype facial recognition system. The new prototype system was trained with 262 identification pictures and confidence ratings were produced from the system for video feeds from twelve users. The results from the trials and variance in confidence ratings are discussed with respect to gender, presence of glasses and make up. The results demonstrated the system to be 95% efficient in its ability to identify users

    Spatio-temporal crime predictions by leveraging artificial intelligence for citizens security in smart cities

    Smart city infrastructure has a significant impact on improving the quality of humans life. However, a substantial increase in the urban population from the last few years poses challenges related to resource management, safety, and security. To ensure the safety and security in the smart city environment, this paper presents a novel approach by empowering the authorities to better visualize the threats, by identifying and predicting the highly-reported crime zones in the smart city. To this end, it first investigates the Hierarchical Density-Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise (HDBSCAN) to detect the hot-spots that have a higher risk of crime occurrence. Second, for crime prediction, Seasonal Auto-Regressive Integrated Moving Average (SARIMA) is exploited in each dense crime region to predict the number of crime incidents in the future with spatial and temporal information. The proposed HDBSCAN and SARIMA based crime prediction model is evaluated on ten years of crime data (2008-2017) for New York City (NYC). The accuracy of the model is measured by considering different time scenarios such as the year-wise, (i.e., for each year), and for the total considered duration of ten years using an 80:20 ratio. The 80% of data was used for training and 20% for testing. The proposed approach outperforms with an average Mean Absolute Error (MAE) of 11.47 as compared to the highest scoring DBSCAN based method with MAE 27.03

    D. H. Lawrence and the Avoidance of Darwinian Tragedy

    Darwin’s theories helped both to destroy D.H. Lawrence’s early Christianity, and to shape the latter’s beliefs in the primacy of the organic, of non-rational forces, and of the animality of man – even though Lawrence soon saw materialism as begging more questions that it answered. He therefore reinterpreted Darwinism in social terms, and contextualised it on the one hand by the individual’s imperative to flourish on his/her own terms, and on the other by a divine, eternally-creative principle. Individuals’ failure to achieve flourishing in the face of Darwinian-social imperatives are seen by him as tragic in proportion to the magnitude of their attempt, yet always on a limited scale, and wholly contextualised by the comedic, eternal life-generating principle. The same applies to the degeneration of civilizations and even of species, which will always replaced by more vital forms. Lawrence is therefore firmly amongst those writers whose understanding of Darwinian evolution fits into a comedic rather than a tragic world-view, in contrast to his great novelistic predecessor Thomas Hardy. Yet, in the case of the social Darwinist character, Gerald Crich in Women in Love, the comedic vision struggles to contain the novel’s tragic treatment of his death. This article deepens our understanding of cultural responses to Darwinism in the case of one of the most canonical writers of the modernist period, and as such deepens our understanding of humanity's ongoing response to Darwin today

    Organisations are facing sophisticated and advanced persistent threats (APT) that are targeting sensitive information assets. Any form of cyber-presence can be typically attacked by adversaries, and the motives of such attacks are context dependent. Besides, users and organisations are prone to software vulnerabilities, misconfigurations, outdated systems and several other systemic deficiencies which can be leveraged to compromise enterprise assets and gain an initial foothold within an organisation network. The aim of the paper is to develop a flexible and generally comprehensive organisational strategy to defend against the massive increase in cyberattacks, in order to protect the strategic business objectives of an organisation and keep an alignment between business objectives and security. Moreover, this paper reflects on the work undertaken by multiple teams within the chosen case study organisation to enhance the cybersecurity

    Coherence of achromatic, primary and basic classes of colour categories

    A range of explanations have been advanced for the systems of colour names found in different languages. Some explanations give special, fundamental status to a subset of colour categories. We argue that a subset of colour categories, if fundamental, will be coherent - meaning that a non-trivial criterion distinguishes them from the other colour categories. We test the coherence of subsets of achromatic (white, black and grey), primary (white, black, red, green, yellow, blue) and basic (primaries plus brown, orange, purple, pink and grey) colour categories in English. Criteria for defining colour categories were expressed in terms of behavioural, linguistic and geometric features derived from colour naming and linguistic usage data; and were discovered using machine learning methods. We find that achromatic and basic colour categories are coherent subsets but not primaries. These results support claims that the basic colour categories have special status, and undermine claims about the fundamental role of primaries in colour naming systems

    Steering direction for a powered-wheelchair using the Analytical Hierarchy Process

    For the first time, the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) is employed to recommend a steering course for a powered-wheelchair. A safe route for a wheelchair is proposed by the decision-making system that tends to evade obstacles. Two ultrasonic transceivers are mounted onto a wheelchair. The resulting route is a blend between a provided direction from a user's joystick and a proposed direction from the decision making system that steers a powered-wheelchair to safely avoid obstacles in the way of the wheelchair. The procedure assists a disabled user to steer their wheelchair by choosing a direction that is a compromise between a direction suggested by the sensors and a direction requested by the driver. Sensitivity analysis explores directions amid uncertainty and risk. An appropriate direction is chosen but a human driver can over-ride the decision if necessary
