"Into without image": Paul Celan reading the moving image

    Get PDF
Paul Celan’s poetry from the late-1960s writes through scenes and images of political protest, but centers on the insurgent way such politics resist articulating imagery. Celan’s poetic image of politics is, paradoxically, an insurgent movement ‘without image’. In order to identify this movement of images through his poetry, this essay reads Celan inside (and outside) the cinema, plotting his poetics of imagery against developments in theories of the moving image that similarly picture cinema as an apparatus for organizing images’ insurgency. I argue that, in parallel to those theories, Celan stages the legitimizing spaces of images’ movement in poetic space. Reading Celan through a Kantian aesthetics of imagery, and through the mechanics of reading, the essay both identifies the centrality of a space ‘without image’ to Celan’s imaginary of sites of protest, and the politics of insurgency in the moving image

‘Fortune is a Mistresse’: Figures of Fortune in English Renaissance Poetry

    Get PDF
Having been a goddess in ancient Rome, Fortune enjoyed a lively retirement in Christian Europe. As a figure for the unequal distribution of worldly goods, Fortune was praised by queens and bankers, and criticized by abandoned lovers and imprisoned princesses. From St. Augustine to Descartes, Christian thinkers rejected the goddess’s reality in order to assert the supreme reality of God’s Providence. Nevertheless, she provided a rich array of meanings even to those who did not, strictly speaking, believe in her. This essay looks at poems from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries where a man’s mistress is figured as Fortune. In these poems, the association between Fortune and women is asserted, ironized, and finally refused. If moral philosophy pitted a male subject against a feminized Fortune, poetry can reveal the process by which Fortune’s attributes are transferred onto women. By representing discourses on Fortune as embodied, passionate and artful speech acts, poems betray the work of figuration within the construction of gender. In figuring Fortune as a mistress, their poems show that the figure itself is liable to change

Covid-19 and Flattening the Curve: A Feedback Control Perspective

    Get PDF
Many of the policies that were put into place during the Covid-19 pandemic had a common goal: to flatten the curve of the number of infected people so that its peak remains under a critical threshold. This letter considers the challenge of engineering a strategy that enforces such a goal using control theory. We introduce a simple formulation of the optimal flattening problem, and provide a closed form solution. This is augmented through nonlinear closed loop tracking of the nominal solution, with the aim of ensuring close-to-optimal performance under uncertain conditions. A key contribution of this letter is to provide validation of the method with extensive and realistic simulations in a Covid-19 scenario, with particular focus on the case of Codogno - a small city in Northern Italy that has been among the most harshly hit by the pandemic

Home Intelligent Systems and Applications Conference paper A Neuro-Fuzzy Model for Fault Detection, Prediction and Analysis for a Petroleum Refinery Peter Omoarebun, David Sanders, Favour Ikwan, Malik Haddad, Giles Tewkesbury & Mohamed Hassan Conference paper First Online: 07 August 2021 1324 Accesses Part of the Lecture Notes in Networks and Systems book series (LNNS,volume 296) Abstract The paper describes data fusion using a neuro-fuzzy system for fault detection, prediction, and analysis of petroleum refining operations and other process industries. The model described in this paper involves algorithms applied to multi-sensor fusion using historical data to create a trend analysis. The main objective is to detect anomalies in sensor data and to predict future catastrophes. Data mining is applied to find anomalies in data sets. Neuro-fuzzy logic is used to find clusters of inputs using subtractive fuzzy clustering. Fault detection and prognosis are essential in a safety-critical environment such as a refinery. A new set of data is obtained and represented using the fuzzy inference system, with three linguistic values used to define and classify the patterns and failures
